Porch Brackets | Buy Online | Huge Selection | Wood & PVC - July 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Home > Products > Brackets Product Listings | Info | Usage Photos | Previous Page Decorative wood and synthetic Brackets can be a major component in your Architectural Details decorating repertoire. Equally at home both inside and out, wood and synthetic Bracket uses are even more varied than our vast selection! Brackets are often overlooked in the initial design of a porch or a room. However, because Brackets are typically only decorative, they can be added to a porch or room later as the budget permits.

Above, the owners simply added Fan Brackets on both sides of the Posts for more curb appeal.

Porch on the right features a more elaborate design. The homeowners combined Porch Brackets, Post Face Brackets, Spandrels, and Running Trim to create this very pleasing porch. Possible combinations are almost unlimited but our 354 porch photos show many possibilities for using Brackets on porches.

Our Brackets come in four standard thicknesses and a variety of natural and synthetic materials. See Choosing the Right Bracket for our Rules of Thumb and helpful hints.

Photo at left: Polyurethane Bracket GB 2430.

Using Brackets inside the home proves the truth of our slogan, Details Make the Difference!

For example, Brackets in cased openings (openings without doors) transform plain openings into gracious doorways. Fretwork Brackets are particularly nice for this use, and their intricate cutwork can be enjoyed from both rooms. To the right a pair of Arched Fretwork Brackets nicely illustrates this point.

Drawings at left show pairs of Stockbridge Fretwork Brackets installed horizontally (top pair) and vertically. As these drawings illustrate, rotating Brackets ninety degrees creates very different designs and changes the amount of usable headroom.

A customer used our Fan Brackets to add whimsical elegance to the shelves in the kitchen shown at right.

Six kinds of Porches for your home | Suburban Boston Decks … - July 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Thinking about a porch for your house? How about a portico? A lanai? Would you like a loggia? Hey, this is America, not Italy. Lets use American words.

Porches in America come in several categories.

An OPEN PORCH has a roof over a deck or a patio but has no screens. Really, it is just a roof with support columns it is totally open to breezes, but is also open to bugs and wind-blown rain. Its shade lowers sunny summer temperatures inside by ten or fifteen degrees. Would you and friends enjoy an afternoon relaxing on these open porches?

Put an open porch on the front of your house, and well call it a FRONT PORCH. Although some front porches in urban areas are enclosed, most front porches are open.

The roofs of smaller PORTICOs and FRONT ENTRY Porches protect arriving guests from the weather, but the best Front Entries entice guests to your front door:

In New England, our FARMERS PORCHES are wide and inviting:

The New Old-Fashioned Porch – HGTV - June 25, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

As more porches sprout in front yards across the country, the homebuilders behind them meet the wants of today's buyers with a kind of architectural back to the future. Popping up in both renovations and new construction, it seems to be all about the new old-fashioned porch.

Porches are also larger these days, Minneapolis architect Paul Buum says, often spanning the full length of the front of the house. Depending on the style of home, many production builders also are making front porches standard and building them wider than a decade ago 8 to 10 feet wide instead of 4 to 6 feet.

"In both remodels and new construction, full lengths are nice for homes facing a street, and so are wider porches to accommodate tables, chairs or the old-fashioned porch swing," Buum says. He adds that wraparound porches with screened-in portions are popular in rural settings and on farmhouse-style homes.

Ensuring continuity with the architectural style of the rest of the home is a key design consideration. A porch should be consistent in detail and character with the rest of the house. "This is particularly true with front porches," Buum notes, "since it's the first introduction a person has to the home."

Buum outlines these porch design trends:

More color. Design elements emphasize color. "You see a lot of multicolor palettes today. You can have one siding or cladding color, another trim color and an accent color on window sashes," Buum says.

Bolder columns. Architectural columns often are on a larger scale for design or aesthetic purposes while enclosing a smaller structural column (typically 4x4 or 6x6 posts), as long as the columns are scaled appropriately to the home. "Columns can be round, squared or tapered and sit on the deck of the porch or a pier."

Durable materials. A well-designed porch typically will encompass the same exterior material as the rest of the home, such as stucco or brick, or synthetics such as fiber cement siding products.

Flooring. In addition to traditional pine or cedar floors on front porches, an increasingly popular choice is ipe, a Brazilian hardwood that is an incredibly strong wood, resistant to insects, rot and mold. "Ipe is moderately priced," Buum says. "Installation can be more expensive than other wood floors, because it's more time-consuming given the very dense wood, which requires pre-drilling."

Especially in remodels, Buum advises contractors to consider how views from the inside of the home will be altered from front windows and how an expanded porch could alter light flow inside the home. Buum also stresses that porches should be pitched to drain away from the home. He also recommends floor venting to prevent moisture buildup and the many accompanying problems that result. "It depends on the base of the porch, whether it's on piers or a continuous long low brick wall. In any case, we vent from underneath the porch, at the base or perimeter walls, to the sides or front so you allow air movement to keep the joist space ventilated and dry."

Archadeck of Kansas City | Decks, Screen porches, sunrooms … - June 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

This is an all-too-common question. It would be great to new that a new wood deck should cost within a particular range. The problem is the range of possibilities and options. Gone are the days of yesteryear when a deck was often a relatively small rectangular shape made of pressure-treated wood with a couple of stairs. Just look at any magazine or at the homes of your neighbors and friends. Todays decks are anything but straight and narrow.

Here are some of the factors that help determine how much a new deck should cost:

There are 3 big variables to consider

    Metal railings w/ cedar deck

    Size/shape:

The first variable is the size and shape of your new deck. Will it be a fairly standard shape or will it have a variety of different angles? Will your new deck be low to the ground or will it be quite elevated.A significant factor is the height up in the air. Its an important consideration because the higher in the air; the more expensive it is to build. It takes more work and also more materials. There are other factors as it relates to size and shape. If the deck is an unusual shape, has a variety of angles, or includes special areas such as a grill bump out, this will affect the price. These special features not only require more construction time but require more material. Further, depending on the standard shapes and sizes that the various materials come in, special design features may require additional material.Unusual artistic shapes create more labor, more time, higher costs.

Its also important to note that different sizes require different degrees of structural support. Its a component of longevity and price. The key to good design is creative attractive shapes with getting too much more expensive.

    Materials:

Its easy to underestimate the cost of materials. not only are many more materials needed than deck boards, bolts, and nails; each of these has a variety of options. There are many man-made products at many different prices. That range is quite wide. Even in woods, there are quite a few different price levels. As a general rule, the man-made materials are higher. How much higher? It depends on these common factors weve noted.
