'Zipper': Sundance Review - January 29, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Courtesy of Sundance International Film Festival

    Patrick Wilson in 'Zipper'

A flaccid scandal movie that makes illicit sex a yawn

    Sundance Film Festival (Premieres)

Patrick Wilson, Lena Headey, Ray Winstone, Richard Dreyfuss, John Cho, Dianna Agron

    Mora Stephens

The fallout from the sexual transgressions that unfold behind America's corridors of power has provided juicy fodder for a lot of excellent television, The Good Wife and House of Cards at the top of the list. So it takes a film with sharper teeth than Zipper to expand the conversation about our endless capacity to be shocked by flawed leaders. Director Mora Stephens ponders (or purports to) what drives men in high office to risk their personal and professional reputations for expensive extramarital recreation. But she gives Patrick Wilson nothing but a sleek shell to play, so it's hard to get too worked up about his character's unraveling.

Stephens and co-writer Joel Viertel have dabbled in politics and passion before, in the director's low-budget 2005 debut Conventioneers. It's taken a decade to cook up this glossy sophomore effort, and in that time tabloid ink has flowed like Niagara Falls with the public shaming of Eliot Spitzer, John Edwards, Mark Sanford and their ilk. Yet there's neither topicality nor bite in this bland pseudo-thriller, which lathers on composer H. Scott Salinas' high-suspense score like shower gel after sweaty sex, yet rarely musters an ounce of genuine tension.

Wilson plays Sam Ellis, a talented federal prosecutor whom we first encounter weeding out corruption in the mayor's office of an unnamed Southern city in a highly publicized court case. (The film was shot in Louisiana but appears to be set in South Carolina.) At the victory drinks afterwards, happily married Sam narrowly resists the aggressive advances of an attractive law school intern (Dianna Agron). But sex is on his mind when he meets a former high-end hooker (Elena Satine) while working an identity theft case. It's also probably on his browser history if his wife Jeannie (Lena Headey) a supposedly even sharper lawyer than Sam before she put her career on hold ever thought to check.

Anyhow, while Jeannie and others close to Sam are urging him to seize the spotlight and throw his hat into the political ring, he's busy sampling the services of a company called Executive Privilege. He's careful to cover his tracks at first, but as he starts working his way through the entire escort roster, he gets more desperate and sloppy, making Jeannie suspicious.

How to Prep Your Home For a Blizzard - January 26, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

#Snowmageddon2015, #snowpocalypse, #blizzardof2015whatever you want to call it, winter storm Juno is scheduled to hit seven states with potential blizzard conditions, leading to possible homeowner headaches like frozen pipes, power outages, and even blown-away shingles or siding.

Here are some of the things that can happen to your home in a blizzard, and ways to prepare for the worst.

    Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

    1. Frozen pipes

When water freezes, it expands, and this can put a lot of pressure on your pipes. If the pressure becomes too great, your pipes can break a messy and expensive issue.

You can sometimes figure out whether your pipes are frozen by turning on a faucet. If only a trickle of water comes out instead of a steady stream, they might be on their way to frozen. If this happens, keep your faucet on while applying heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad, portable space heater, or hair-dryer. Once the water pressure is restored, stop applying direct heat and keep your faucet on at a trickle.

Pipes most susceptible to freezing are those exposed to extreme cold, like water supply lines in unheated areas like a basement, attic, garage, or crawlspace, according to the American Red Cross.

Its a good idea to notch up the temperature on your thermostat a little higher than you normally would. Sure your heating bill might be a higher, but you could help keep your pipes warm and avoid a far more expensive problem in the long run. And if you have a garage, make sure your garage door is closed to keep the cold air from freezing any water supply lines.

If you want to take extra precaution, consider installing products like pipe sleeves or heat tape on any exposed water pipes, which you can buy at any hardware store like Ace or Home Depot. Think of it as a little sweater for your pipes. Even a little bit of newspaper can help with insulation.

Tory Government betrays our elderly with 1bn social care cuts - January 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Savage cuts of 1.1billion have left hundreds of thousands of vulnerable pensioners without help washing, dressing and eating, a damning report reveals today.

Vital services such as meals on wheels and home visits have been hit particularly badly since the ConDems came to power in 2010, Age UK found.

The charitys Caroline Abrahams described the studys findings as devastating and said: Hundreds of thousands of older people who need social care are being left high and dry.

Age UK found the number of over-65s receiving care fell nearly 30% from 1,230,625 under Labour to 849,280 now.

The amount of day care places plunged 67% from 178,700 to 59,125 and numbers getting meals on wheels fell 63.7% from 81,460 to 29,569.

Half of the one million elderly people who struggled to wash or bathe and a third of the 350,000 who had difficulty getting to the toilet got no help.

    30%

Fall in number of people over 65 receiving social care since 2005/6

Of the 570,000 people who struggled to get out of bed on their own, a third do not receive any support.

Two-thirds of the 250,000 people who had trouble feeding themselves were also left in the lurch.

UK weather: Britain braces for further storms – January 15 as it happened - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

This concludes today's live weather coverage. The most up-to-date information on the looming cold snap can be found here.

21.20 Vehicles driving through flood water, as rapid snow melt overnight across the Yorkshire Dales caused rivers to overflow, and many roads were affected by the flash flooding.

20.55 Dr Angie Bone of the extreme events team at Public Health England has warned the public to take precautions against the cold weather.

"Cold does kill, even in places where the temperatures aren't at their lowest," she said.

"Most of our advice on keeping warm in cold weather may seem like common sense, but it's important that we make the point that people should think about how cold can affect them.

"This is also a good time to think about how the bad weather may affect your friends and family, particularly if they are older or very young or have pre-existing health conditions. These groups can be particularly vulnerable to the ill-effects of cold so think now what you could do to help."

20.25 A high-rising wave batters the lighthouse at Porthcawl, on the south coast of Wales.

20.00 Thousands of homes across Ireland have been left without power after storm force winds battered the country overnight leaving thousands of homes without power.

19.45 In Scotland some drivers were left stranded on the A9 when the snow gates were closed from Blair Atholl to Ralia at around 9pm last night, with the traffic beginning to move again at around 10am today.

A spokesman for road operator Bear Scotland said: "Our team of eight winter vehicles, including three fast-track tractors, worked around the clock to clear the A9 and this morning helped to mobilise 20 HGVs that had difficulties due to the adverse weather overnight."

Laundry fire could have destroyed entire home - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A QUICK response was crucial to containing a laundry fire on Terranora Rd on Thursday night.

Just after 7pm, emergency services were called to a home at Bungalora, where a washing machine was well alight.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokeswoman said crews from Banora Point and Tweed Heads attended the home, where one female occupant had evacuated.

The spokeswoman said the electrical fire, which started inside a washing machine, was extinguished by about 7.30, before fire crews set about ventilating the home.

She said the fire was contained to the laundry room, which sustained some damage.

Banora Point Fire Station commander Daryl Pearce said if the owners hadn't been home, it could have been far more serious.

"It could have been quite a lot worse," Mr Pearce said.

"Had no one been at home, they could have lost the house

"The owners turned the power off, which was a smart move."

Mr Pearce said itwasn't clear whether or not the washing machine was running at the time.

We have been struck by gales, blizzards and flooding, but so far winter has spared most of us the worst of the icy temperatures until now.

The country is to be gripped by a deep freeze that will last for days, with a bitterly cold weekend ahead and some areas dropping to -10C by Monday.

If the predictions are right, it will be England's coldest spell for two years.

As the deep low pressure system responsible for this week's gales moves away - which flipped over a caravan in Cumbria yesterday - it will suck bitter Arctic winds in from the North.
