Blood pressure (BP) is the pressure exerted by circulating blood upon the walls of blood vessels and is one of the principal vital signs. When used without further specification, "blood pressure" usually refers to the arterial pressure of the systemic circulation, usually measured at a person's upper arm. A persons blood pressure is usually expressed in terms of the systolic pressure over diastolic pressure and is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Normal resting blood pressure for an adult is approximately 120/80mm Hg.
Blood pressure varies depending on situation, activity, and disease states, and is regulated by the nervous and endocrine systems. Blood pressure that is pathologically low is called hypotension, and pressure that is pathologically high is hypertension. Both have many causes and can range from mild to severe, with both acute and chronic forms. Chronic hypertension is a risk factor for many complications, including peripheral vascular disease, heart attack, and stroke. Hypertension is generally more common, also due to the demands of modern lifestyles. Hypertension and hypotension go often undetected because of infrequent monitoring.
The table on the right shows the classification of blood pressure adopted by the American Heart Association for adults who are 18 years and older.[1] It assumes the values are a result of averaging blood pressure readings measured at two or more visits to the doctor.[3][4]
In the UK, clinic blood pressures are usually categorised into three groups; low (90/60 or lower), normal (between 90/60 and 139/80), and high (140/90 or higher).[5][6]
Blood pressure fluctuates from minute to minute and normally shows a circadian rhythm over a 24-hour period, with highest readings in the afternoons and lowest readings at night.[7][8] Loss of the normal fall in blood pressure at night is associated with a greater future risk of cardiovascular disease and there is evidence that night-time blood pressure is a stronger predictor of cardiovascular events than day-time blood pressure.[9]
Various factors, such as age and sex, influence a person's blood pressure and variations in it. In children, the normal ranges are lower than for adults and depend on height.[10] Reference blood pressure values have been developed for children in different countries, based on the distribution of blood pressure in children of these countries.[11] As adults age, systolic pressure tends to rise and diastolic tends to fall.[12] In the elderly, blood pressure tends to be above the normal adult range,[13] largely because of reduced flexibility of the arteries. Also, an individual's blood pressure varies with exercise, emotional reactions, sleep, digestion, time of day and circadian rhythm.
Differences between left and right arm blood pressure measurements tend to be random and average to nearly zero if enough measurements are taken. However, in a small percentage of cases there is a consistent difference greater than 10mm Hg which may need further investigation, e.g. for obstructive arterial disease.[14][15]
The risk of cardiovascular disease increases progressively above 115/75mm Hg.[16] In the past, hypertension was only diagnosed if secondary signs of high arterial pressure were present, along with a prolonged high systolic pressure reading over several visits. Regarding hypotension, in practice blood pressure is considered too low only if noticeable symptoms are present.[2]
Clinical trials demonstrate that people who maintain arterial pressures at the low end of these pressure ranges have much better long term cardiovascular health. The principal medical debate concerns the aggressiveness and relative value of methods used to lower pressures into this range for those who do not maintain such pressure on their own. Elevations, more commonly seen in older people, though often considered normal, are associated with increased morbidity and mortality.

If there were any doubts about Samsung Electronicss ambitions for its homegrown Tizen mobile operating system, it may be time to put them to rest.
The worlds largest handset maker will begin selling its new Tizen smartphone, the Samsung Z1, in India today, marking Samsungs biggest step so far in trying to build a credible alternative to Googles dominant Android operating system.
You could be forgiven for harboring some skepticism. The company first said it would launch a Tizen smartphone in the second half of 2012. Since that failed prophecy, Samsung has said again and again that it was on the verge of releasing a Tizen smartphone capped by a trio of failures to launch last year.
The repeated stumbles have wreaked havoc on the platforms credibility, particularly among developers, who are staying mostly on the sidelines for the new smartphone launch.
That could come back to bite Samsung, despite a workaround that allows Samsung Z1 users to access services like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube without the app makers having had to develop Tizen-specific apps.
Even viable platforms without a critical developer engagement fail, said Roberta Cozza, a research director for Gartner. Samsung in its past software efforts has not shown a good track record with developers community. It has a lot to prove here as an ecosystem owner beyond just a technology leader and limited time given their market challenged position.
As for the device itself, Samsung has recalibrated its new Tizen smartphone once aimed at Japan and France to target the lowest end of the market. At 5,700 Indian rupees ($92), the phone is aimed at consumers who may have never had a bank account, never mind a smartphone.
On many levels, the device is basic ideal for a lightweight operating system like Tizen that isnt necessarily meant to handle heavy-duty tasks. The interface is simple and uncluttered, and is designed to focus on core smartphone functions like phone calls, messaging and photos.
While part of Tizens appeal is its potential role in tying together disparate Samsung products, from washing machines to wearable devices, the Galaxy Z1s specifications arent powerful enough to link to the companys current line of smartwatches.
What it does have, in a similar nod to Samsungs new mid-range smartphone lines, are some select features of its premium phones part of an attempt to set apart the Samsung Z1 from a growing pool of low-end competitors.

The fag end of 2014 was specked with amazing events, unprecedented in India's business history. It marked the next phase of mobile telephony revolution in India and saw the launch of a major mobile-based e-governance initiative.
For those born in 1990s, the first leg of the mobile revolution, which began 20 years ago with grant of mobile licences and that generated revenues of Rs 4,29,087 crore in fiscal 2014 (including Rs 1,95,294 crore telecom equipment market), doesn't mean much, except that they have personal mobile phone, an email identity and an amazing number of applications to stay connected and to play.
What will be noticed, used and appreciated by this generation are applications like MobileOne launched by the Karnataka government that promises to place governance at the fingertips of citizens. It promised to integrate nearly 600 Government-to-Citizen and over 4,000 Business-to-Customer services and make them accessible on any mobile phone, irrespective of the operator by dialling just 3 digits -161-from anywhere in the country.
When adopted by departments and undertakings of other states e-governance services could enhance transparency and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi's goal of taking India into the top 50 nations in terms of ease of doing business by the end of 2016 from 93 just announced by Forbes and 142 assigned by the World Bank (June 2014) study.
Many of us, born before 1960s, would recall taking a long walk to complain about power-cuts and lack of water supply even in the state capitals, because we did not have a phone at home. The irony is that the ministers for telecommunications proudly stood up in parliament, session after session, during question hour to share the number of Indians on the waiting list for landline connections. What usually took 20 years is today possible in a matter of hours.
It all changed with the Telecom Policy of 1994 -- from barely a few lakh phone connections to nearly 900 million Indians connected via mobiles, from just three helpline numbers --100 for Police, 101 for Fire and 102 for Ambulance -- to an innumerable 1-800 Helpline, Consumer Care and Government Services numbers. In these 20 years, the world has changed for millions of consumers and those who serve them on these helplines.
By serving the 'Business-to-Customer' opportunity, the e-Services, also commonly referred to as 'Shared Services' has flourished -- from technical help desks to fix computer bugs, selling dematerialized securities over phone, getting a technician to fix a broken microwave or a washing machine, tele-checking for a flight to seeking a dental appointment in a Delhi hospital by calling a centralized call centre in a remote location. An urban citizen could typically be connecting with customer service agents in call centres or shared services centres on two to six occasions on any given day.
Along with a burgeoning telecom industry an entire customer service experience movement has been triggered. Conservative estimates suggest that nearly 1,50,000 to 2,00,000 young Indians employed in Shared Customer Services serve over a billion people in the domestic market alone, bringing in revenues of Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 5,000 crore. (This does not include the dedicated call centres set up by institutions like Banks).
Increasing options, cut throat competition and growth of e-commerce has changed market dynamics and there is a shift of power from the marketer to the consumer.
E-commerce firms and fulfilment agencies are already engaging with the professional shared services companies to improve service experience. Banks discourage their customers to walk into a branch by offering dedicated call centres and help line numbers.

FITCHBURG -- Unitil Corp., the electricity and natural-gas provider for Fitchburg, Lunenburg, Townsend and Ashby, reports that energy usage is highest during this time of year, due to a combination of the cold weather, holiday events and get-togethers and, in some households, elaborate holiday displays.
Derek Kimball, manager of residential services of Unitil, said with the shorter days, people also end up using lights more, and that's a good place to start when trying to lower energy usage.
"Look at the types of fixtures you have and how often they are on," Kimball said.
He said it's a good idea to replace older incandescent lights with newer CFL bulbs, in general, and the rule is especially true for lights that will be on for three or more hours a day.
Kimball also said to check insulation levels connecting to the attic and basement, as they are common places where heat is lost. He said when people run wires or plumbing fixtures through different levels, they often create new air-leak spots that need to be plugged with foam insulation.
On the stove, Kimball said to match the pan size to the element size to prevent waste. For example, a 6-inch pan on an 8-inch burner will waste more than 40 percent of the heat produced by the burner. He also recommended using smaller pots and pans when possible.
"If you're cooking two eggs, you don't need a big frying pan for that," he said.
Also, keep the stove top clean and shiny, particularly the replaceable burner pans.
Don't run dishwashers until they are full, and then select the shortest cycle that will adequately clean the dishes. If the dishwasher model allows it, users can also save power by shutting it down before the drying cycle and keeping the dishwasher door ajar instead.
Set the refrigerator dial to 36 to 40 degrees and the freezer to zero to 5 degrees. Look to see if the refrigerator has an energy saver switch, and if so, activate it. Defrosting is also recommended before ice gets to be a quarter-inch thick, because the appliance will have to work harder through the ice.

If they're correct, 2015 could bring better business outcomes, billions in renegotiation, the end of the RFP, and cloud robots.
This year brought the IT outsourcing industry an increase in hybrid offshoring, a greater focus on in-house service integration, a new lower-cost consulting model, smaller deals, and bigger governance requirements.
CIO.com again asked outsourcing observers to peer into their crystal balls. And if they're right, 2015 could be the year IT outsourcing gets business-focused, customers embrace standardization, sourcing decisions become fact-based, and the age-old RFP process gets some real competition.
1. Outcomes Become the Name of the Game
The new year should see an increase in market facing process solution -- marketing, campaign management, inside sales--that enable providers to align their compensation and incentives with the buyer's intended business outcomes, says Marc Tanowitz, partner with outsourcing consultancy Pace Harmon. "These solutions will incorporate increased use of cloud-based technologies to allow providers to compete and differentiate based on their unique offerings and will allow buyers to partner with outsourced providers to transform the way they engage with their customers," Tanowitz adds.
Meanwhile, says Susan Danino, partner with outsourcing consultancy Information Services Group, "outcome-based pricing is evolving as a true answer to solving some challenges of upfront one time investment costs when it comes to contracting with a third party."
2. Dawn of the Cloud Robots
In 2015, autonomics and cloud technologies will meet, argues Jeff Augustin, managing director of outsourcing consultancy Alsbridge. "Smart robots will increasingly operate in the cloud, and we'll see a 'labor-as-a-service' approach emerge as clients and providers find that intelligent tools and virtual agents can be easily and flexibly hosted on cloud platforms," Augustin says. "This will build even more momentum and interest in autonomics."
3. Customers Embrace Standardization
Cloud, utility computing, and virtualization will converge in 2015, and everything will start to look the same in 2015, says Joshua B. Konvisser, partner with law firm Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman. "As the industry becomes more and more comfortable working with the cloud, the industry is becoming even more comfortable with the benefits of standardization -- increased efficiency, virtualization, reduced support costs, for example, Konvisser says. "Thus, even in bespoke outsourcing arrangements, there may well be more similarity than difference, both within a single company's formerly complicated IT environment, and across companies -- both client and provider. The cloud, utility computing, and virtualization are converging to create this new operating model that will become the new paradigm for IT outsourcing.

Facebook has acquired a company that makes voice recognition technology for wearable devices and internet-connected appliances, the latest sign of its ambition to extend its reach beyond computers and smartphones.
Facebook said it acquired wit.ai on Monday, without providing a price for the deal. The 18-month old company, based in Palo Alto, California, makes software that can understand spoken words as well as written text phrased in "natural language".
A Facebook representative declined to provide details on how Facebook planned to use the technology or with which group within Facebook the wit.ai team would work.

The deal comes as technology companies are racing to bring internet connectivity to a new crop of devices, from watches to washing machines. Voice recognition, the technology that helps power services such as Apple's Siri, is considered a key building block for the new devices to earn mainstream consumer appeal.

Facebook, the world's largest Internet social network, with 1.3 billion users, is increasingly looking beyond the PCs, tablets and smartphones currently used to access its service. In March, it acquired virtual reality headset maker Oculus VR for $US2 billion.
The deal for wit.ai is likely to have been significantly smaller. Wit.ai announced in October that it had raised $US3 million in a funding round led by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.
