HDR Remodeling, a remodeling contractor in the East Bay, recently received two awards during the annual "Remmie" Awards Dinner on Nov. 14.

The two winning kitchen designs from HDR Remodeling were completed in-house by Jim Tibbs and Lucy Chia Lu Kuo, designer, and executed under the management of Philip and Anderson and Brian MacRae, president and production manager of HDR Remodeling. HDR Remodelings two projects will be entered into the national competition, which is held in early 2013.

The San Francisco Bay Area chapter of NARI includes the cities of San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland, Piedmont and the surrounding East Bay cities, as well as the North Bay up to and including Santa Rosa.

The competition within the Bay Area remodeling industry is fierce, based on the large number of very talented professionals and outstanding companies that operate in this area. For this reason, it is a major honor for a company to be singled out for an award. It is also a great way for the general public to be introduced to the work of the local leaders in the industry.

The mission of the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of NARI is to build an interactive community of general contractors, trade contractors, specialty contractors, designers, suppliers and affiliated professionals within the remodeling industry.

If youre considering remodeling but cant decide if its worth going ahead, here are some things to consider.

1. Is it truly necessary or are you just trying to keep up with the neighbors? Sometimes a big remodeling job is so expensive you might be better off moving to a newer home.

2. Consider all the possibilities. Think about the cost. Can you afford it? Is your income secure? Remember that once you start, you cant turn back. A good architect and a good building contractor are worth the money, so dont skimp when it comes to choosing help.

3. Consider how long you intend to stay in this house. If you plan to stay for the rest of your life, then remodeling is a good idea. If you are planing to stay less than five years, you might consider simple improvements.

4. Remodeling is a messy, inconvenient and frustrating process filled with large and small disappointments. It will take longer than estimated. It will cost more as unforeseen costs appear. Prepare yourself.
