Elgin roofing company president arrested after fleeing - September 6, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Article updated: 9/4/2012 1:43 PM

The president of an Elgin-based roofing company, wanted on federal fraud charges, has been caught after two weeks on the lam, prosecutors said.

Authorities said Robert Durchslag, 56, of Aurora, fled arrest Aug. 17, a day after being charged with wire fraud. The charge alleges that his company, Singles Roofing Company, did not pay for more than $1.8 million worth of roofing supplies and equipment it received from an out-of-state vendor in 2009.

Prosecutors said Durchslag was located at a Michigan Avenue hotel last week and taken into custody. He is scheduled for a detention hearing Thursday.

According to court papers, Durchslag is accused of falsifying his companys bank records and depositing bad checks into the companys account in order to receive roofing materials on credit from a New Jersey-based supplier. When asked for payment, he told the vendor that his company had been the victim of an embezzlement, authorities said. They also accuse Durchslag of fabricating a letter from a bank investigator purporting that Singles had been the victim of a $17.8 million embezzlement.

Durchslag faces a maximum of 20 years in prison if convicted and a $250,000 fine. The indictment is seeking forfeiture of more than $2.5 million.

Christiansen Roofing collapses under poor economy - September 3, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

The roofing company owned by Winnebago County Board Chairman Scott Christiansen will shutter its doors amid financial woes.

The commercial and residential roofing company incorporated with the state in 1988, according to Illinois Secretary of State records. It employed more than 100 people at one time, but has struggled financially for about a decade. It was down to about 10 employees at the time Christiansen made the decision to close. Most others had moved on because there wasnt enough work for the company, he said.

The economy has just been so tough. Its the worst weve ever seen it and thats construction in general, Christiansen said. Were just not able to continue.

For his part, Christiansen said he hasnt managed the day-to-day aspects of the business since he was elected as county chairman in 2004 and dedicated himself full time to the county role. Professional managers were hired to run the company. He said his employees did a good job, but the businesses financial struggles are a symptom of a poor economy one thats been especially hard on construction.

Its been especially hard on mid-sized contractors like Christiansens company because they havent been able to sustain the amount of work needed to stay afloat through the downturn, said Glen Turpoff, executive director of the Northern Illinois Building Contractors Association. Residential roof remodeling has some recent peaks, Turpoff said.

But as far as commercial new roofing entities, there hasnt been new roofs to build. And people are putting off maintenance as long as they can possibly put it off, Turpoff said. Therefore, the squeeze has been enormous.

Christiansens company primarily focused on industrial and commercial customers. He said the state of Illinois still owes the company money for work done at the University of Illinois in Champaign.

Ive put a good share of my life into it and so has my wife, Christiansen said. Theres just nothing out there and the work you do youre concerned about being able to get paid on it because its like everybodys hanging by a thread.

Christiansen hasnt filed for bankruptcy or other financial protection yet. He said its not needed at this point, but may be in the future.

The works not there and we put every dime weve got back into the business, Christiansen said. We hoped the economy would turn around and its just not turning around quick enough here.

Detectives trace illegal dumping to roofing company - August 31, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    MAURY COUNTY, Tenn. -

Detectives determined that a local roofing company had a role in illegally dumping trash on a piece of Maury County property.

Officials told Nashville's News 2 Investigates someone illegally dumped 16 loads of shingles and roofing materials on the property owned by the Rogers Company.

After going through the debris, detectives discovered paper work linked to a local roofer.

I'm going to say it is expensive to take this and dump it off, so I would say they found an access road where it is easily accessible," Detective Terry Chandler said.

Det. Chandler said he interviewed the man hired to drive debris to the landfill.

According to Chandler, the man admitted to dumping two of the loads illegally. He is now charged with criminal trespassing and littering.

Nashville's News 2 Investigates spoke with the roofing company owner on Thursday who said he sub-contracts with the man who was charged. He added that he should not be responsible for what the man did.

Investigators said Rogers Company is working with the parties responsible for the debris who have agreed to clean up the site so far.

However, the problem is there are federal mining requirements for cleaning up the debris left on Rogers' property.

Officials select Doyle Roofing for building work - August 30, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

County officials on Tuesday approved an agreement with a local roofing company to carry out a roofing project at the Cheboygan County Building. The Board of Commissioners approved the agreement with Doyle Roofing in the amount of $198,019 for roof membrane and insulation replacement. County Administrator Jeff Lawson said bids were opened Aug. 1 for a project to replace approximately two-thirds of the existing roof of the County Building, which is the first phase of needed improvements. Five bids were received. Great Lakes Roofing had the lowest bid initially, but they later asked to increase their bid amount after it was determined they had not completed roof core samples. As a result, their bid was disqualified. Lawson said Story Roofing had the next lowest bid at $188,426, followed by Tri-Star Industries at $190,900. However, a bid of $195,127 was submitted by Doyle Roofing, and because the countys purchasing policy allows for Cheboygan County-based companies to be considered if they are within 5 percent of the confirmed low bid, the architect was asked to qualify the local bid. The total amount of the agreement includes a performance and payment bond, which caused some discussion between the Board of Commissioners, some of whom questioned whether it was necessary for a reputable, local company. If we are already paying an extra 5 percent for a local contractor with a good reputation, I think we are just throwing money away (by also paying for a performance bond); its a waste, said Commissioner Cal Gouine, who suggested saving money by going through a title company. Although he has been involved with projects that did not require a performance and payment bond, Lawson said the countys civil counsel attorney recommended having it as a legal precaution, and said he felt it was the safest option. Lawson said work is estimated to begin mid-September and could be complete by mid-October, although the county has not yet received a schedule. In other business, the Board of Commissioners also heard an annual report from Probate Court Judge Robert Butts, and were introduced to the concept of a new Cheboygan County Juvenile Independence Court that is being implemented.

Roofing companies busy finishing projects before Isaac hits - August 24, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

NAPLES, Fla - Roofing companies are scrambling to complete unfinished business.

WINK News caught up with roofers at Kelly Roofing in Naples as they worked to secure materials on a home in Hawks Ridge Thursday afternoon. The workers are hoping to get all the tiles installed before Isaac hits southwest Florida.

Eddie Guevara, a project administrator with Kelly Roofing, says, "storms with high winds tend to shift a lot of roof tiles and blow off shingles. That will rip up the whole roof, sections of the roof or just move the roof more than it should move in a days time. That could easily cause a leak."

Once a roof hits a certain age, Guevara says it needs to be repaired. Tile roofs should be repaired every 20-25 years and shingle roofs should be repaired every 15-20 years.

After the storm it is recommended that you have your roof inspected to make sure all the tiles are in place.

Many roofing companies, including Kelly Roofing, will do that inspection for free.

Guevara also recommends checking the inside of your home after the storm to see if there are any stains, as stains are a sign there is a leak in your roof.

Billings Catholic Schools roofing projects under way - August 23, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Incomplete roofing and remodeling projects at a few of the Billings Catholic Schools buildings didnt stop 1,003 students from their first day back to school for the 2012-2013 school year Wednesday.

Our total enrollment is higher than it has been at any time the past 10 years, said Kathy Harris, Billings Catholic Schools marketing director.

The roofing project at the Saint Francis Upper building is only about half done, even though the work was expected to be finished in August. Harold Olson, the school systems president, said the project should be done by the middle of week.

The 205 students who filled the building Wednesday didnt seem to be bothered by the construction, Olson said.

I visited most of the school and didnt really notice too much of a difference with the construction, other than precautions for safety so shingles dont drop from up above, Olson said.

The newly consolidated preschool at Saint Francis Primary hit full enrollment Wednesday with 112 students. Both daycare and preschool are being held in the churchs basement during projects to expand and remodel the building.

The sheet-rocking will begin Thursday and should take about a week to complete and we still have flooring and painting to complete, Olson said. We expect the entire project to be complete no later than Sept. 23, when we will bring the school alive and have all the preschool and daycare programs at one site.

The roofing construction at Central High is should start next week and may take up to five weeks.

Enrollment at Central hit 332 for this school year, Harris said.

Seven new teachers joined the system this year, including two kindergarten teachers, a K-5 counselor, a seventh- and eighth-grade science teacher, a high school choir teacher and a part-time high school biology teacher and part-time upper-lever Spanish teacher.

Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt Reinvents Shingle Sample Boards - August 23, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

TOLEDO, Ohio, Aug. 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Demonstrating its ongoing commitment to roofing professionals, Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt introduces a new collection of shingle samples. Designed to address specific needs articulated by contractors, this new approach to samples will help improve the sales process for professionals and their customers.

    (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120823/CL61741)

New samples are encased inside a clear vinyl sleeve, helping to prevent messy granule loss and eliminating the need for staples that can cause damage to surfaces in the home. The sleeves also work to protect samples against the natural wear and tear that occurs during storage and day-to-day use.

"Owens Corning Roofing regularly solicits feedback from its customers to help inform the development of new products and services that will address their unmet needs and ultimately help support their business," said Matt Lawver, Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt contractor services leader. "We've taken a step away from the traditional sample board approach by developing a tool that works better for both the contractor and their end user, the homeowner."

The reinvented shingle samples fit inside an optional easy-to-carry case and weigh up to 80 percent less than traditional sample boards. The result is a light and organized sales kit that makes it more convenient for contractors to carry a variety of shingle colors and options in from the office or truck, compared to traditional sample boards.

Owens Corning Roofing Platinum Preferred Contractors, a selected group of top-tier roofing contractors, currently have access to the new shingle samples and the sample case through the Owens Corning ProConnect Resource center, http://ocproconnect.com. As an added benefit, sample orders are shipped to professionals in just 3-5 business days.
