Russell Roofing restores cupola of Overbrook School for the Blind - August 3, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

PHILADELPHIA Russell Roofing returned a part of architectural history today as they put the newly restored cupola atop the Overbrook School for the Blind.

As part of a complete renovation to the Main Entrance roof at Overbrook, Russell Roofing rebuilt the 1,700-pound copper cupola that has been in place since the 1800s. The cupola was fully restored with new 20-oz. copper and all of the original details were replicated during the process.

When the cupola was taken down, a time capsule was discovered inside with documents detailing the names of the mechanics who worked on it, their timecards and information about the project. To continue this tradition, Russell Roofing created its own time capsule with names and pictures to be placed in the new structure along with copies of the original documents.

In honor of the restoration of the cupola, a group of students and staff from Overbrook were on hand to replace the time capsule. Since 1832, Overbrook has offered a variety of programs for children of all ages and abilities, and Russell Roofing is pleased to have had the students in attendance for this memorable event.

Roofing companies see boost in business after heavy rains - August 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Molly Waldron

    CREATED Aug. 1, 2012

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Some roofing companies are seeing a boost in business after heavy rains swept through the Las Vegas area this week.

"We've actually had some golf ball size hail out in Sun City and Summerlin which is causing some damage to the tiles, to sky lights, and causing leaks also," John Tighe with Professional Roofing Services said.

Many roofing companies had every worker on the clock on Wednesday.

"We're very busy this time especially with the amount of rain we had in the short period of time," Tighe said. "A lot of roofs are leaking that probably wouldn't leak in a lighter rain."

Roofing companies say now is a good time to check your roof for leaks or damage. If left uncared for, they say even minor leaks could cause structural damage to drywall and plywood.

Despite the heavy rain, some roofs may only see problems now after getting hit from the other extreme found here in Southern Nevada.

"I would say the sun is a lot hotter here and the weather is more extreme when it come to that," Tighe said. "Exposed roof systems, flat roofs tend to wear out a lot faster that it would in a different climate."

The unfinished roof on the Mud Lake Road home of Richard Overland, one of Mr. Perry's disgruntled customers.

A Glen St. Mary roofing contractor paid thousands of dollars for jobs that reportedly never got off the ground or remained unfinished after months and months is facing 14 counts of fraud for his lack of liability insurance.

Darrell G. Perry, Jr., 32, has pulled 14 permits at the county building department since September, 2011 using documents allegedly forged to show he had liability coverage, according to police.

The latest permit was issued to reroof a mobile home owned by Donnie Jacobs on Woodrow Raulerson Road and enlarge the roof to accommodate a patio and porch.

Mr. Jacobs, 58, said he paid Mr. Perry $4,000 in June to start the job on July 1, but it wasnt until July 12 that the contractor sunk 14 posts that have since begun to warp in the sun.

Mr. Jacobs is recovering from a heart transplant in January and takes a host of medications. He said his only income is from disability and his wifes salary at Northeast Florida State Hospital.

I get up every morning and take beaucoup medicines. Ive been through quite an ordeal. I might of died at Shands if I hadnt gotten a new heart, he said. Im certain I dont need all this stress right now.

He said Mr. Perry has not made any more progress on his new roof, other than to park a trailer at his property.

Roofing company fined for workplace injury - July 18, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

King Roofing and Aluminum Contractors Inc., based in King City, has been fined $90,000 after a worker was injured in Brampton almost four years ago. A supervisor was also fined $10,000 in relation to the same incident. According to Ontarios ministry of labour, workers from the company were replacing the roof of a home in Brampton on August 11, 2008 when one of the workers accidentally stepped off the roof while moving a bucket of tar. The worker fell to the ground below and the bucket of tar overturned, spilling tar on the fallen worker. The worker broke multiple bones and suffered third degree burns. A Ministry of Labour investigation revealed that there was no form of fall protection at the project and the injured worker and another worker had not been trained in fall protection. The injured worker had also not been wearing appropriate clothing for work with hot tar. King Roofing & Aluminum Contractors Inc. pleaded guilty on a number of fronts including failing to ensure that workers were trained in fall protection, were adequately protected by a guardrail system and were wearing appropriate protection against injury for the hot tar. Joe Scarna, owner of the company and supervisor at the time of the incident, pleaded guilty to failing, as a supervisor, to ensure that the workers were adequately protected by a guardrail system. Justice of the Peace Jeannie Anand imposed the fines today in Brampton. In addition to the fines, the court imposed a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge, as required by the Provincial Offences Act. The surcharge is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime.

    McVean Drive reopened

McVean Drive, from Lexington Road to Castlemore Road in Brampton, has been reopened fully to traffic following a watermain break earlier this month.

Research and Markets: Building Integrated Photovoltaics Roofing Markets – 2012 - July 18, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/dvl56m/building_integrate) has announced the addition of the "Building Integrated Photovoltaics Roofing Markets - 2012" report to their offering.

BIPV offers both the PV industry and the building products industry a way out of their current economic plights. For PV firms, BIPV provides a product strategy geared to adding value to products. For the building products industry, BIPV represents a new line of products that will enable construction firms to add saleable features to buildings of all kinds.

While all this is true of all BIPV products, there is a natural migration path from today's rooftop PV panels to BIPV roofing. With this in mind, NanoMarkets is publishing this report, which identifies and quantifies the market opportunities for BIPV roofing.

The report discusses a roadmap for BIPV roofing in which business revenues are generated initially by simple overlay products and then by conventional rigid and flexible BIPV roofing products and finally from fully integrated products. The report also shows how the performance of BIPV roofing is expected to evolve with a special focus on lifetime requirements and the materials that will be used both for substrates and absorber layers.

This report also includes extensive forecasts of the BIPV roofing market in terms of wattage, area covered and revenues generated. Breakouts are provided by type of building, type of BIPV roofing and key materials used. In addition, we project the nations and regions that will generate the most revenues for BIPV roofing and the breakouts of the BIPV roofing market by retrofit and new construction. As usual with NanoMarkets reports, this report also includes a detailed assessment of the strategies of the leading firms currently supplying BIPV roofing products.

    Key Topics Covered:

    Executive Summary

E.1 BIPV Roofing as a Way Out of the PV Industry Slump

E.2 Prospects and Opportunities for BIPV Roofing Products
