Boulder police report sheds light on why garbage truck was stolen - August 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

BOULDER Police said the man accused of stealing a garbage truck in Boulder and then leading cops on a chase down U.S. 36 may have been "freaked" by officers near his home on an unrelated call just before the alleged theft.

A police report on the incident released Thursday night shed some light on the possible motivation behind the bizarre series of events that led to the arrest of Daniel Morkert, 26, of Boulder, on suspicion of auto theft, careless driving and eluding a police officer on Wednesday.

According to the report, a neighbor said Morkert got "freaked" when officers showed up in the area of his apartment at 2995 College Ave. at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday on an unrelated call.

An officer at the scene wrote in the report that Morkert exited his apartment during the call with his pitbull named Diesel, thanked the officer and then asked, "Can I borrow your police car?"

New Documentary Sheds Light On Current State Of Homelessness In America (Video) - August 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A new documentary shines a light on the current problem of homelessness in the United States.

Filmmaker Jack Ballo produced a documentary titled Destinys Bridge which focuses on a homeless community in Lakewood, New Jersey, started by minister Steve Brigham, who lives among dozens of others in the same situation.

The film follows Brigham, who dedicates his time addressing the emotional needs of other homeless people, and believes that its the first step in helping them adjust to life back into society, according to a fundraising page for the film.

In the fundraising campaign video for the documentary, Ballo brings attention two major concepts: Understanding why homelessness exists in the hope of finding successful solutions, and changing U.S. laws to make it legal for poor Americans to build small homes that are affordable for minimum wage workers.

"There are tent cities all over the country, and they're not going away," Ballo says of the makeshift communities built outdoors and consists of homeless people in mostly urban and suburban communities. "We need to come up with new ideas to manage the homeless crisis and find solutions, instead of having people suffer needlessly while we're wasting taxpayers' money.

Earlier this year, CNN reported that the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty estimates that there are currently over 100 tent cities in the U.S., including in Wisconsin, New York and Texas.

According to the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness, more than 3.5 million people experience homelessness every year. Thirty five percent of these people are families with children, the fastest growing type of homeless people in the U.S.

Twenty three percent of homelessness is comprised of military veterans, 25 percent of homeless people are children under the age of 18 years, 30 percent have experienced domestic violence and 20-25 percent suffer from mental illness, the campaign reports.

Destinys Bridge has completed filming and the documentary has been shown at small screenings.

Ballo created an IndieGoGo fundraising page to pay for music licensing costs, and says in the campaign video that additional funding after the $38,000 goal has been reached would go toward small-scale homes for the homeless across the country.

Khar restaurants come under BMC hammer - August 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Civic squad demolishes illegal shed at Le Sutra; notices sent to eateries in Union Park

The civic authority demolished illegal sheds erected by a popular Khar restaurant, which could well be the beginning of a crackdown on several eateries in the Union Park for violation of various rules.

The H/West ward has issued notices to at least three other outlets in the area for similar violations and complaints by local residents about encroachment and activities that pose a hazard are pending against some others.

No permission for sheds A squad of the H/West ward took down the extension sheds that were put up around "Le Sutra" ostensibly to ward off rain water. Ward officials said the restaurant, located off Carter Road, had not sought necessary permission for the shed.

"We issued a notice to the restaurant 15 days ago (under section 152 of MRTP Act) ordering them to remove the violations. Since they did not comply with the orders we had to start with the demolition of the illegal structures," said Prashant Sapkale, assistant municipal commissioner.

According to officials, a restaurant staffer had tried to assault Sapkale, who was leading the demolition squad, and an FIR was registered in the matter.

    Hotel goes to court

Hetram Kumar, director, Pali Hill Tourist Hotels Pvt Ltd, which ownsLe Sutra said, "We moved the high court after we got the notice. Theward authorities should have waited for the hearing before carrying out the demolition. We have not carried out any illegal construction."

    Notices to other outlets

Sapkale said notices had been issued simultaneously to three other eateries in the area Shatranj hotel, Olive and Nido for similar violations and action would be taken against them in the next couple of days.

Notice to Khar eateries over illegal sheds - August 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The BMC has issued notices to three popular eateries in Khar that have built temporary monsoon sheds outside their premises. The BMC has alleged that the eateries have used this section for commercial purposes, which they claim is illegal. The restaurants have now been given 15 days to remove the temporary sheds.

The Union Park Association in Khar has been pursuing the authorities to check the violations made by the eateries. Restaurants such as Nido, Olive Bar & Kitchen and Le Sutra are three of many popular spots which built sheds due to the monsoon and have allegedly used this space for commercial purposes.

Bharati Kakkad, Secretary, Union Park Association says, "We have been in touch with the BMC over this issue since 2004 and it has finally taken action against the perpetrators."

Residents feel that the restaurants in this area are a general menace. Surekha Kotwani, the association's treasurer says, "My society is situated right next to Olive Bar & Kitchen, while the kitchen of Out of the Blue touches the society wall. A few months back, gas cylinders were kept on the street just outside their eateries. Now, they have installed gas pipelines, which are equally dangerous."

Kotwani also alleges that the bamboo used to erect the monsoon shed and cover the kitchen has been dug into the footpath. "They have ruined the paver blocks. In addition, I am not too sure of their fire safety," she says.

Last year, the Khar police station, the fire department and the traffic police objected to so many eateries, which popped up in a 500-metre radius. "We conducted a fire audit of the restaurants. It showed that most of the restaurants pose a fire hazard. We have a copy of the letter from the Khar police station stating that in case of any emergency, rescue efforts will be stalled."

Prashant Sapkale, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, H-West ward, says, "We have served multiple notices to the eateries on that road and they had challenged these in the civil court. Now the cases are pending in the high court. Once the court stay is removed, we will take action."

Nagesh Tolar, manager of Olive Bar & Kitchen, refused to comment, and the other restaurant managers remained unavailable despite several attempts to get in touch.

LeSean McCoy sheds weight to get quicker - August 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LeSean McCoy has stopped eating Doritos at midnight. That's part of the Eagles running back's emphasis on nutrition, which helped him drop four to seven pounds this offseason in an effort to become even quicker.

McCoy led the NFL with 1,607 rushing yards last season, but apparently that was not enough. He wanted to be lighter. McCoy has trimmed down to about 209 pounds.

"I felt like last year, even with the year I did have, it was based on guys up front really blocking well and [me] just going off God-given talent," McCoy said. "I feel like at a lighter [weight], I'm so much more effective. I look at my old film and see how much quicker I was when I was 210, 209. It's a big difference. And I'm feeling like that again."

This was different than the "best-shape-of-my-life" declarations that often come from training camp or spring training, in part because the observation actually came unprompted from offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur. When discussing quarterback Matt Barkley, Shurmur said Barkley and McCoy were the two players whose bodies had changed the most during the time off.

"Maybe it was just being away from [McCoy] for a while," Shurmur said. "He just looked good."

It turned out Shurmur was on to something. McCoy wanted to be "bulkier" last season. The results were evident, but McCoy thought coach Chip Kelly's offense required more quickness. His objective was to boost his metabolism for this season.

"Everything is about portions," McCoy said. "I'm not eating Doritos with the sauce at 12 o'clock at night. Small portions. A lot more meals."

McCoy said the weight loss was not a directive from the team's staff, which is specific about fitness and nutrition. He explained that he took the initiative. Even if his production suggested an elite running back, McCoy said he knows his own body, how it should feel, and the benefits of being bulky or light.
