Police: Vandal Set Fire That Destroyed School Storage Sheds - August 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

WACO (July 31, 2014) A vandal set the fire that destroyed one storage shed and heavily damaged a second shed outside of the Midway ISDs $600,000 agriculture barn early Thursday morning, Hewitt police Chief Jim Devin said.

The suspect vandalized a fan in the barn and the surveillance images show him hugging and petting, but not harming some of the animals inside.

The vandal set fire to the two storage sheds, which were built by students at a cost of $5,000 to $6,000 each, Midway ISD Superintendent Dr. George Kazanas said.

Police described the suspect as a tall white male with tattoos who was wearing a sleeveless black T-shirt known as a wife beater, and a ball cap.

The fire was reported at around 4:40 a.m. Thursday at the Midway ISD FFA Agricultural Science Instructional Facility at 10401 Panther Way.

Flames engulfed the sheds when the first crew arrived, Assistant Waco Fire Chief Patrick Kerwin said.

Hewitt firefighters arrived shortly afterward to assist in battling the flames.

Firefighters had the fire under control in less than 10 minutes but they didnt leave the scene until after 6 a.m., Kerwin said.

Both buildings, approximately 10-by-12 feet in size, were used to store feed and hay, Kerwin said.

The barn and the storage sheds occupy a 20-acre site off Panther Way.

Equipment, other items stolen from two sheds - July 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Calhoun County Sheriffs Office

Thieves targeted a couple of equipment sheds in Calhoun County recently.

According to a Calhoun County Sheriffs Office incident report, a resident reported July 21 that someone removed items from a shed on Center Hill Road near St. Matthews between June 26 and July 21.

Missing items included between seven to 12 motors (1- to 1.5-horsepower), five batteries and an older model red welding machine. The estimated value of the stolen items was $3,200.

The resident told deputies he contacted Sunshine Salvage in Orangeburg and was informed that some motors had been brought in.

Also, a resident of Kennerly Road near St. Matthews reported July 14 that someone stole items from her unlocked shed while she was on vacation July 1-13.

Reported stolen were a Craftsman weed trimmer, a Craftsman blower and a five-gallon gas container. The resident said gas was also missing from a parked vehicle in her yard. The estimated loss was $360.

    In other reports:

Ski club splashes out on upgrades at Lake Moogerah - July 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

AN APPROVAL for the expansion of recreational facilities at the Lake Moogerah Water Ski Zone Club has been granted by Scenic Rim Regional Council.

The approval allows for two new boat sheds, the extension of two existing boat sheds, new ablution buildings including toilets and showers, and the extension of an outdoor covered area adjoining the clubhouse.

Councillor Virginia West said this would allow for better security and improve facilities for the club's membership base.

"The new sheds and the expansion of existing sheds will allow more members to safely secure their boats, while the ablution facilities will expand to cater for female toilets and a shower block separate to male facilities, and for persons with a disability," Cr West said.

Clubhouse renovations will include an additional new roofed patio and proposed upgrade to the existing club facilities.

Cr West said it would be great to have improved facilities for the 300 members of the club.

Sheds for farmers market raise questions - July 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (AP) Sheds for a farmers market blocking a roadway running between the poverty-pocked east side of Detroit and upscale Grosse Pointe Park have raised questions about the suburban community's intentions.

The development has some in mostly white Grosse Pointe Park cheering the quieter pace of less traffic along Kercheval while some in mostly black Detroit see the change as a hostile act, the Detroit Free Press reported (http://on.freep.com/1q96gAI ) Monday.

"This is a real transformation," said Bob Spitzley, 64, of Grosse Pointe Park, as he stood last week along the community's business strip. The project was "a way of stabilizing this business district," said the retired Ford financial analyst, who has lived near the strip since 1989.

Last week, workers finished building stone-trimmed traffic barriers and sheds to house those selling at the farmers market. The Rev. Joel Wallace, who preaches at nearby Abundant Faith Cathedral in Detroit, said the blockade had "a prejudice overtone" to his 100-member congregation.

"I'm going to pray for Detroit and pray for Grosse Pointe and hope that we can do something together, not isolate ourselves," Wallace said.

But Grosse Pointe Park officials said that the blockade was essential for revitalizing the business strip.

"We're not in some kind of conspiracy against Detroiters that's just so far-fetched," Grosse Pointe Park Mayor Pro Tem Greg Theokas said. "A lot of jobs, a lot of good things can grow out of this, and for Detroit as well as for Grosse Pointe Park."

Grosse Pointe Park initially about a year ago discussed the idea of blocking Kercheval by constructing a five-story medical building, from curb to curb. After a burst of adverse public reaction, some from their own residents, Grosse Pointe Park's leaders retreated from that plan.

Detroit "was not notified or consulted at all, so we had no input one way or the other" about the new blockade, said John Roach, communications director for Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan. Roach said the city is "reviewing its legal options."

Seven arrested over spate of shed burglaries - July 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Seven people have been arrested following burglaries from sheds at an allotment in Walton.

Various sheds were broken into at Home Farm Allotments, in Rydens Road, between 1am and 4am on Tuesday July 15.

A member of the public alerted police after watching three men putting high powered machinery into a car.

Surrey Police officers arrested seven suspects after discovering the vehicle at a Thames Ditton address.

Seven men - four from Esher and two from Thames Ditton - have been arrested on suspicion of burglary and released on police bail until September 10, while the investigation continues.

Investigating officer PC Madeleine Debuse from Staines CID said: "Allotments can often be in isolated areas or are not particularly well overlooked we need the community to play its part in deterring this type of criminal activity.

"In this case, due to the vigilance of a member of the public officers were able to track down the offenders.

"Although arrests have been made in connection with the incident police are still urging anyone who was in the area and may have seen this incident taking place to come forward."

PC Debuse added: "Garages and sheds can be an easy target for thieves particularly if they contain expensive equipment and are sited away from main properties. I would strongly urge residents to spend some time upgrading garden security and ensure that any sheds or outbuildings are securely locked. If your shed does not contain any equipment consider fitting a window into the structure.

Anyone with information about this incident should call Surrey Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, which can be anonymous on 0800 555 111, quoting reference 45140058916.
