New discovery on Giant Cell Arteritis sheds light on cause - January 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Jan. 17, 2014 New research from Queen Mary University of London has revealed -- for the first time -- how the condition Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) may be caused by a certain group of white blood cells called 'neutrophils'. GCA (also known as temporal arteritis) is a condition which causes severe inflammation in the blood vessels and primarily affects the elderly.

GCA is initially treated with a six-month course of high-dose steroids. This study, published today in the journal Circulation Research, has shown that despite what appears to be signs of improvement following the treatment, the neutrophils become altered in a severe way that could lead to stroke or blindness.

This is the only study of its kind to investigate the role of neutrophils in relation to GCA and the discovery was made by comparing blood samples from patients suffering from vascular diseases. Patients with GCA, recruited to Southend University Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital, had blood samples taken within 48 hours of beginning steroid therapy, and again at 1, 4 and 24 weeks into treatment. Researchers examined these samples by isolating the neutrophils and studying its behaviour.

Mauro Perretti, lead author and Professor of Immunopharmacology, Queen Mary University of London, comments:

"We are very excited by this discovery and hope our findings will eventually lead to better clinical insight into whether a patient with GCA is really improving with treatment. It is commonplace for patients to come off therapy after six months but our research shows this may be too early for many. A GCA patient may appear to have recovered, but these findings reveal how changes and complications in the circulatory system could cause serious illness, such as stroke or even death.

We hope our study will lead to doctors monitoring the status of their patients' neutrophils in order to fully and truly assess disease progression and therapeutic control."

The research was a collaborative four-year effort led by Professor Mauro Perretti and colleagues Professor Bhaskar Dasgupta, Head of Rheumatology at Southend University Hospital, and Professor Justin Mason who leads on vascular Inflammation at Hammersmith Hospital.

In the UK, it is estimated that about one in every 4,500 people will develop a new case of giant cell arteritis each year. The condition is age-related and only tends to affect adults over the age of 50, and more commonly adults over 60 years old. The condition is three times more common in women than in men and it also seven times more common in white people than in black people.

‘Aghast’ Conrad sheds crocodile tears for Gloria - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

My former comrade Conrad de Quiros pronounces himself aghast at the medical condition of former President Gloria Arroyo (Opinion, 1/15/14). Nonetheless, he still wants her to stay behind barsbecause it is a matter of justice, a matter of crime and punishment.

Rest easy, old friend. If youre worried about justice being compromised by mercy in her case, consider the following factsall of them verifiable from the recordwhich only reinforce the presumption of innocence on her part that every accused person is entitled to by law:

    1. The alleged evidence against Arroyo, in the PCSO funds plunder case under which she is currently detained, consists solely of her marginal notation OK on the funds-release document. The Ombudsman itself admitted that this was not irregular per se.

    2. There is no shred of evidence that Arroyo appropriated even a single cent of those funds for herself. When asked if the prosecution had anything else apart from the OK notation, the sole witness against her, PCSO director Aleta Tolentino, had to admit: That is all we have, sir!

    3. Arroyo was not involved in subsequent actions taken by the PCSO board and management to disburse those funds. Moreover, those disbursements were duly audited by the Commission on Audit and found to be compliant.

These are just some of the facts showing that Arroyos degree of participation in the alleged offense does not justify her detention without bail. The other consideration, extenuating circumstances, is addressed by a medical certificate last November from Dr. Antonio Sison, a spine surgery specialist at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center, who said in part:

Arroyo is suffering from cervical and lumbar pain with further deterioration of her poor physical health, which may cause serious impairment to her health and danger to her life, unless attended to promptly.

I know it grieves De Quiros to see Arroyos plight, which he says he would not wish to befall anyone, even her. But if he insists on rushing to judgment despite the facts mentioned above, then the tears that hes figuratively shedding for her will turn out to be nothing but: crocodile tears.

Gujarat sheds 47 jobs - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Jan. 17, 2014, 11 a.m.

    Gujarat

Nearly 50 Gujarat NRE Coking Coal workers will walk out of the Illawarra mines for the last time today, leaving behind their jobs after a turbulent year.

Chairman Jasbir Singh announced 47 people had been offered a voluntary redundancy package, after the company announced it needed to restructure the workforce at Russell Vale and Wongawilli mines late last year.

The company originally planned to shed about 90 jobs, or 20 per cent of its workforce, due to high production costs, unstable global markets and delayed expansion approvals.

Over the last three to four months considerable effort has been directed to ensuring the mines remain operational and as many jobs as possible are maintained, Mr Singh said. said.

While the primary aim of the voluntary redundancy scheme was to reduce manning by up to 90 positions, we will offer this to 47 workers who will finish their employment this week.

We will then look at the potential for workers to relocate between the two mines, taking into account the vacancies that have occurred in the last four months due to resignations and natural attrition.

It is believed the company will also pursue forced redundancies in the coming weeks.

Sheds Brewing Co., new brewery in Jackson, to open Jan. 25 - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

JACKSON, MI Microbreweries are popping up everywhere around the Jackson area these days.

The latest, Sheds Brewing Company, is set to open Saturday, Jan. 25, at 3090 Shirley Drive in Blackman Township, the former site of Lenores Aerobics.

Sheds Brewing co-owners Blong Thao and Jeff Tolonen, who are both Consumers Energy employees, have been busy renovating the interior of the location and, most importantly, perfecting the brews that will make up the Sheds selection.

Thao and Tolonen are self-described hopheads and rank IPAs among their favorites. However, expect a diverse variety on tap at Sheds.

Our goal is robust, malty, full-flavored, high-quality American ales light to dark, Thao said.

Sheds will feature six beers on tap to start. Thao and Tolonen brew in single-barrel batches, making Sheds fall under nanobrewery status.

There will also be snacks available. Hours will be noon to midnight Saturdays, noon to 10 p.m. Sunday, 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays and 5 p.m. to midnight Fridays.

In addition to the beer, Sheds will feature free pool and ping-pong tables and flat-screen televisions and eventually an outdoor beer garden.

Sheds will be the third brewery to open in Jackson since June 2013, joining Grand River Marketplace, 117 W. Louis Glick Highway, and Bifferhaus Brewing Company, 900 Lansing Ave.

We think its great Im a member of the mug club at the other two, Tolonen said. Wed love to see Jackson become a mecca for beer great beer.

Senate Intelligence Report Sheds Light on Benghazi Attacks - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

An armed man waves his rifle outside the U.S. consulate compound in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012.

A long-awaited Senate Intelligence Committee report released Wednesday concluded there was no specific advanced warning ahead of the Sept. 11, 2012, Benghazi attacks that killed four American diplomats, but top officials should have done more to ensure safety in the region.

"In the months prior to the attack, [U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens] and other State Department officials in Libya outlined concerns via cables to State Department headquarters about the security of the Mission compound in Benghazi and made several requests for additional security resources," the report said.

But despite the warnings, sufficient action to improve safety was not taken, according to the Senate panel.

"Despite the clearly deteriorating security situation in Benghazi and requests for additional security resources, few significant improvements were made by the State Department to the security posture of the Temporary Mission Facility," the report said. "The committee found no evidence that significant actions were taken by the State Department between August 15, 2012, and September 11, 2012, to increase security at the Mission facility in response to the concerns raised in that meeting."

Thought the report went over many long-reported details of the attacks, some new details were revealed.

While Stevens, one of the four diplomats who died that night, was still missing, someone was using his phone. But some receiving the calls soon became alarmed the individual was trying to lure people in for another attack.

"After an exchange of calls between the individual in possession of Stevens' phone and some of the Americans, the Americans became concerned that the caller could be luring U.S. personnel into an ambush at the hospital and concluded it was too risky to go to the hospital," the report said.
