    How to Properly Install James Hardie Siding – Siding | Roofing - November 25, 2018 by Mr HomeBuilder

    K & B Home Remodelers, a James Hardie Preferred Remodeling Contractor located near Morristown, New Jersey will now show you how to properly install James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding, which is quickly becoming the most desired exterior cladding in Morris County.

    Unlike aluminum and vinyl siding, which usually goes directly over most homes existing wood siding, Hardie Plank is a genuine exterior building product, so all the present siding needs to be removed down to the original substrate.

    Once the old siding has been removed, regardless if its vinyl, aluminum or wood, a thorough inspection is performed making sure there is no rot, water or termite damage. If any bad wood is found it is replaced with exterior grade CDX plywood sheathing.

    Once the structure has been determined serviceable, Hardie Wrap, an engineered vapor barrier is applied to the entire exterior. By taping every seam this not only helps seal up drafty areas, it allows the house to breathe properly from the inside out by allowing the expulsion of excess moisture, and prevents water from infiltrating from the outside.

    Next a waterline level is taken to determine the high and low point to ensure an even siding application all the way around the home. A small strip known as a kick-out row is fastened to the wall creating the proper angle for the overlap of each plank as its applied to the wall.

    Inside corners can be made by from bending PVC Coated Aluminum or by using Hardie Board Trim, to achieve the desired look. Outside corners, depending on the profile can be made either mitered for the James Hardie Artisan Panel, woven for Hardie Shake or a traditional to suit any profile the customer desires.

    Hardie Plank is then blind nailed so that no visible nails are seen or left exposed to the elements. Each plank is butted the same way wood clapboard would be installed.

    Unlike vinyl siding that allows water to get behind it, especially around windows and doors, relying solely on house wrap to channel water. James Hardie Siding requires flashing under each and every butt joint. This will channel any water out and down into the row below.

    Houses with low foundations where the siding is less than the ideal 6 inches from the grade require a composite or aluminum skirt board. This can be made to match either the trim or the siding color.

    Roof to Wall Transitions are handled much in the same way. Composite or aluminum trim boards are applied 2 inches above the roof line to prevent the siding from ever wicking.

    When it comes to your homes window trim, several options are available. If your existing window & door trim is remaining, it can be wrapped in custom formed PVC Coated Aluminum, then sealed by using an exterior grade color matched caulk.

    Using Hardie Trim Boards a variety of looks can be achieved, from Historic Window Trim with a traditional sill nose, or crown headers. An apron can be added to replicate an old-style window trim, as well as the ever popular craftsman by picture framing the opening in widths ranging from 2 to 5 inches.

    Mounting blocks are then installed around any hose bibs that protrude through the siding, with a inch drip cap on top. Blocks can be made to match either trim or siding color. The same is case with all bathroom and dryer vents. As well as all lighting fixtures. Custom mounting blocks can also be made to accommodate mailboxes, flag poles and house numbers.

    Special care is taken around masonry transitions. Aluminum flashing is installed to avoid moisture absorption along water tables or sills, and composite trim or aluminum flashing at all vertical stone and brick walls.

    Fascia, rakes and gables can be replaced with various size Hardie Trim Boards, as well as decorative moldings such as crowns and bed moldings, rake, base and rams crowns. Hardie Soffits come in both solid and vented. Keeping in mind to always provide proper roof ventilation.

    All these components, properly installed by a James Hardie Preferred Siding Contractor can transform any style home, from colonial to contemporary, cape cod to craftsman.James Hardie Siding installed by K & B Home Remodelers has a 30-year warranty, a 15-year paint finish warranty and a lifetime labor guarantee. 19 Jan EverLog Concrete Log Siding Installation Video - November 25, 2018 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Welcome to EverLog Systems, the best way to build a log and timber home.

    This video is a basic introduction on installing EverLog Siding, which is a revolutionary engineered concrete siding product used in both renovations and new construction.

    Installation of our EverLog Siding is simple and can be completed by any contractor or do-it-yourselfer. In conjunction with our installation guide, this video will show you just how easy installation can be.

    EverLog Siding comes pre-finished and is packaged in durable crates. A forklift is required to unload crates from the trailer. Contact EverLog Systems for crate weight and forklift recommendations, Also reference our EverLog Siding crate handling and siding removal instruction manual. The crates should be placed on level ground with 24 blocks under the front to provide a slight tilt from front to back.

    Partially remove top screws using T-30 bit included with delivery, carefully set lid aside. Partially remove front scr3ews on both right and left end panels, fully remove screws from front bottom front panel and reserve for re-assembly. Carefully lay front panel down.

    Using two people carefully tilt siding up and lift on edge, always carry panels on edge. Place packaging foam in a safe place until crate is empty at which point the foam can be placed back into the crate before closing crate up in reverse order of disassembly. Crates containing corners or other custom components may have additional bulkhead screws that need removed prior to removing face panel.

    Installation requires a few common tools. A four and one-half inch electric angle grinder and accompanying four and one-half inch masonry blade is recommended for most if not all cutting. A hole-saw may also be needed for round cuts such as dryer vents or plumbing penetrations. A high-speed cordless drill or two with extra batteries is also recommended. EverLog Systems recommends using GRK Cabinet Screws along with the companion HSS Bit Holder, also made by GRK to ease installation.

    As with any construction task, proper safety and protection equipment such as safety eye and ear protections, respirators and gloves should be used at all times when handling and cutting concrete materials.

    Prior to installing any siding, outside and inside corners need to be installed first. Our corner posts come in stock ten-foot lengths so most corners will need to be cut to fit on site prior to their installation. After measuring the short and long lengths, mark the corner with a speed square with the length or angles needing to be cut. Care should be taken when planning cuts and strap locations. The angles can then be cut using the angle grinder.

    Once the corner is cut and fits nicely, unfold the embedded installation straps and securely fasten the corners to the wall using two screws per strap.

    After cutting and installing corners youre ready to begin horizontal siding installation. Install and secure HSS Bit Holder into the drill, refer to GRK instructions for the bit holders adjustment instructions. Place Cabinet screw onto bit holder and press against panel flange, the magnetic bit holder will secure the screw during driving.

    Using a high speed setting, drive the self-tapping screw into the center of the flange, a minimum of two inches from the end. Speed should be reduced just before setting screw snugly against the siding flange taking care not to over-tighten. Repeat process taking care to hit the stud locations. Panels should be spaced one eighth inch apart end to end and end to corners to allow for expansion and contraction. All butt joints should be factory end to factory end with cuts placed against corners or other trim.

    Because EverLog Siding comes in stock twelve-foot lengths it will need to be cut to fit. Measure length of siding needed, again allowing for one eights inch gaps on ends. Mark length needed on siding, a template tool can be made to automate markings for square or pitched cuts. Mark the siding with a clearly visible line. Place blocking under the siding to allow four and one-half inch masonry blade to penetrate through the siding. Once safety equipment is in place and clear of obstructions, begin cutting siding. Hold the angle grinder securely and parallel to the cut, after cutting brush dust from the surface of the siding using a soft bristled nylon brush. Each profile of siding is cut using similar methods.

    Please call EverLog Systems at 877.257.5647 with any questions and refer to our siding installation guide.

    2018 Average Siding Prices | Home Siding Cost Estimator - November 11, 2018 by Mr HomeBuilder

    On This Page:

    The average homeowner pays between $5,000 and $14,050 for siding to be installed on their home exterior. Vinyl siding costs about $0.90 to $2.50 per square foot compared to fiber cement at $0.70 to $5.25 and brick at about $3.50 per square foot. Aside from the material, your home's size and shape will also impact the price of installing siding.

    There are a lot of factors that go into the final cost of installing siding. These include:

    Finally, when you have your siding installed can make a big difference in the cost. Installing siding during the off-season will usually grant you a lower price from your contractor. In contrast, installing during the spring and summer months will generally cost a premium since these are the times when contractors are most in demand. Costs vary by region, so where you live will also play a role in how much you will end up paying.

    Some vinyl siding manufacturers recommend using a pressure washer once a year, while others advise against using pressure. Be sure to check with your manufacturer's instructions before using a pressure washer as the damage done will be permanent. You can rent a pressure washer from Home Depot for an average of $34 per day, making vinyl maintenance a relatively inexpensive task.

    An easy DIY cleaning solution can also be used to clean vinyl siding throughout the year. The combination of 70% water and 30% white vinegar makes a great all-purpose cleanser that removes light mold and mildew stains. Use a soft brush to clean siding and avoid using anything harsh such as steel wool or other highly-abrasive scrubbers.

    Engineered wood is another option for wood siding. Engineered wood is plywood or hardwood sheets made up of bits of wood bonded together with special resins and treated with insecticide and fungicide. It often comes pre-primed and ready to paint or already finished in a number of styles that mimic the look of real wood. Engineered wood is lighter and easier to install than traditional wood, making it a popular choice for DIY projects. The average total cost of installing engineered wood is $3,000-$5,000.

    After installing engineered wood siding, the only maintenance that should be done is washing once a year with a power washer and possible repainting every 5 to 10 years. The chemical compounds in engineered wood helps withstand mold, rot, and prevent insects.

    Bevel or clapboard wood siding is a traditional form of siding on homes. Some popular wood siding options include pine, spruce, cypress, and Douglas fir. These woods are economical and durable. Cedar and redwood are also great options since they naturally contain rot resistance. However, they are more costly than other wood options. The added upfront cost, though, could save you money down the road by preventing termite and other insect damage along with water damage.

    The price of wood varies from year to year and by location. Here are some average prices for wood siding materials:

    Unlike vinyl and aluminum siding, wood siding requires some additional maintenance. Along with washing siding annually using soap and water, wood siding needs to be treated every four to six years depending on the amount of snow and sun your area receives. This may require re-staining and/or re-painting. It is important to keep on top of wood maintenance to prevent rotting, mold, and insect damage. A complete refinishing job including clear finishes, semi-transparent stains, and re-painting will cost $2,000-$5,000 total.

    James Hardie Fiber Cement is touted as a low-maintenance option for a wood-like appearance. It should be cleaned annually like aluminum, vinyl, and wood siding using soap and water (with or without a pressure washer). JamesHardie.com also offers a variety of maintenance products for your specific siding. In addition, any dents, chips, cracks, and other minor surface damage in James Hardie siding and trim products can be filled with a cementitious patching compound.

    Cost to Install Brick or Stone Siding – Estimates and … - October 15, 2018 by Mr HomeBuilder

    How much does it cost to install brick or stone siding?

    Many people crave the look of a brick or stone house, although it is not affordable enough to everyone. In fact, the price is not the only disadvantage, since the labor, the time and the problems that can occur with insulating also affect the decision of the buyer to opt for a better solution. Therefore, apopular alternative is to add a veneer sidingusing faux bricks or stones. The result is a house that looks like the real thing, but for a fraction of the price and with little or no required maintenance. In addition, aveneer does allow for insulation, which can lower energy cost, although it has to be taken into account that working with mixed materials is very common, so you may want to use brick veneer on one section of you home, and fiber cement on another.

    Prices vary depending on the type of veneer1, the size of the house andthe condition of the walls, among others.It will typically cost$11-$15per square foot toinstall stone or brick veneer1 siding to a 1000 square foot addition, for a total of$11,000-$15,000.

    Vinyl and Aluminum Siding | Angie’s List - October 15, 2018 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Long popular because of its longevity, resistance to dents and energy efficiency, aluminum siding is also fireproof and will not rust. Its enamel coating can come in a variety of colors, and because metal reflects heat, it also helps to reduce heating and cooling costs.

    The main drawback to aluminum is that people generally regard it as cheap and of lesser quality than wood or brick. It can be prone to denting, and some people complain that it can shake and be noisy in windy conditions.

    Longevity and Maintenance - Expect aluminum siding to last between thirty and fifty years. Like vinyl, it requires very little maintenance. It should be cleaned every few years, and its a good idea to check it occasionally for dents, scratches or cracks. Another benefit is that it can be repainted, if you ever decide you want a different color.

    Cost Slightly more expensive than vinyl, aluminum will run between three and four dollars a square foot. Regular maintenance costs are eliminated when you choose aluminum.

    Installation The installers should spend time preparing the wall surface, making it as smooth and clean as possible. A 3/8th inch backing should be installed under the metal. The sheets should be overlapped by at least two inches, and corner caps should be used after the sheets are installed.

    Wood Siding Installation – Pattern Overlap and Area Coverage - September 14, 2018 by Mr HomeBuilder

    DON'T RUN SHORT!

    1x8" Wood SidingTHIS is EIGHT inches?

    Wood siding is often sold by the linear (or lineal) foot in 6", 8" and sometimes 10" and 12" widths. These widths are called NOMINAL "in name only" measurements. The ACTUAL or "dressed" width will be less.

    BUYER BEWARE WARNING! Although there are wood siding industry standards like WWPA, WCLIB, WRCLA, CRA, NELMA - the actual thickness, width, pattern overlap and exposed face can vary from mill to mill. This variation can significantly impact the actual LFT VOLUME of wood you need to buy to cover YOUR specific SQFT area.

    Be sure to confirm the DRESSED pattern measurements with the mill BEFORE you buy. Running a hundred SQFT short can cost $$$$ if custom milling and shipping are involved.

    To figure out how many linear feet (LFT) of siding you need you must multiply the square foot area you need to COVER by a linear factor based on the siding width you have selected 6", 8", 10". The Lineal Foot Factor is derived by dividing 12 inches by the individual pattern's "exposed" face - the width that will be visible after the siding boards are installed.

    A) Calculate the square footage in walls: length x height = area SQFT

    B) Calculate, and then subtract, the square footage of doors and windows

    C) Add 10% to cover trim and waste to (B) which gives you the estimated SQFT you need to cover

    D) Find your pattern and nominal width in the table below

    E) Multiply your estimated SQFT by the pattern's linear Foot factor

    SQFT x LFT Factor = estimated Linear Feet you will need for the job. You MUST figure this out BEFORE you BUY!

    When we quote your wood siding SQFT we will use the dimensions specific to the mill producing YOUR order. You will see those specifications on the confirmed quote BEFORE you commit to the order.There are NO hidden gotchas!

    * assuming 3/8" board overlap

    * assuming 1/2" board overlap

    * assuming 1" board overlap

    * assuming 1" board overlap

    * assuming 3/8" overlap, allow 1/8" gap

    * assuming 1/2" board overlap

    * assuming 3/8" board overlap

    * assuming recommended 2" board overlap

    * assuming 1/2" board overlap. Note dressed dimensions are the same for both Rabbeted and NO Rabbet quarter log profiles

    1x8" Pattern Coverage Example: If you are siding four walls 8 feet high by 40 feet long with 8" wide cedar siding boards and we allow 10% of the total square feet for openings, you would need approximately 2250-2450 linear feet depending on pattern selected:

    These examples are for estimating only. They are based on industry pattern standards but CAN and WILL vary from mill to mill. Be sure to confirm these dimensions with the mill before you order!

    How to Install Vinyl Siding – Vinyl Siding Institute – VSI - August 13, 2018 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Sheathing/Backerboard

    Vinyl siding should be applied over a sheathing that provides a smooth, flat surface. Consult local building codes for sheathing requirements. Vinyl siding must never be applied directly to studs without sheathing. As an alternative, installation of specific types of drop-in contoured foam underlayments for various styles of vinyl siding are available. Some manufacturers of vinyl siding do not recommend the use of drop-in backers with certain vinyl siding configurations.

    Vinyl siding can be installed over common wood sheathings such as plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), or other materials (e.g., foam plastic insulating sheathing). The thickness of wood sheathing counts toward the total thickness that the fasteners must penetrate into nailable material, usually 1 1/4 (32mm). But foam plastic sheathing does not contribute toward holding the fastener, so its thickness cannot be counted toward the total. In this case, the fastener would have to be long enough to penetrate through the sheathing and 1 1/4 (32mm) into the wood framing.

    Vinyl siding should be installed over a continuous water-resistive barrier to stop the intrusion of incidental water. Refer to Important Notes for more information on water-resistive barriers. Check your local building code for requirements in your geographic area.

    Code-compliant flashing should be integrated with the water-resistive barrier and applied around windows, doors, and other openings. Flashing should also be applied to inside and outside corners, and the intersection of walls and roofing to prevent water infiltration.
