Picking over south-west trash and treasure, American TV style

    - January 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Jan. 31, 2014, 4 a.m.

SHEDS full of forgotten heirlooms and dust covered collectables in the south-west are likely to be aired on national television.

SHEDS full of forgotten heirlooms and dust covered collectables in the south-west are likely to be aired on national television.

TV series Australian Pickers is looking to film in Warrnambool in March, providing they generate enough interest from people with sheds and homes full of unique or bizarre items.

The second season is a spin-off of an American series. Two episodes were filmed in Victoria last year but producers are hoping to film an entire episode in the south-west.

It all depends on the kinds of participants we get, associate producer Eve Neylon said.

Were looking for people with garages full of stuff and boxes they might not have opened for 10 years.

Some people might be professional collectors.

We dont want people with stuff theyd sell at a garage sale.

Pickers starring in the series pay and negotiate for the items they find locally, but the show grabs audiences by promising interesting characters among idyllic country backdrops.

Townwide support of expanded sewer district mulled in Moreau

    - January 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MOREAU -- Almost everyone agrees sewer service is needed along Route 9 if it stands a chance of blooming into the commercial corridor desired to offset the residential tax burden in coming years.

But, as always, its a question of who will pay for the infrastructure, and many are wondering if theres a way to distribute the cost of a proposed $14.1 million project which includes sewer service on Route 9 and down Bluebird Road across the town instead of laying it only on those within the sewer district.

Is there a way to have it paid for by the entire town not just those in the district? If we get commercial development on Route 9, we will all benefit, said resident Bobbi Spaulding during the public comment portion of Tuesdays Town Board meeting. Spaulding, who does not live in the proposed extension, made the connection between the tax base and the school district considering closing a school, saying its all connected.

Supervisor Preston Jenkins said that was a common suggestion he heard over the past 30 days, and an idea he would support pursuing.

I dont know if people would support it, but I wouldnt have a problem trying it, Jenkins said.

The Town Board meeting fell the day after the deadline for property owners within the sewer district to petition to send formation of the new district to a vote.

That vote will be held from noon to 8 p.m. April 1 at the Municipal Complex using machines from the Saratoga County Board of Elections.

By law, only property owners may vote, which some residents took issue with at the meeting.

Corporations will get one vote, and if one person owns several properties, they will get one vote. If a property is owned jointly, it appears both owners would get a vote, said Town Attorney Karla Beuttner.

The town learned in early December it would qualify for low-interest funding, for the first time ever, and was given a condensed timeline to complete adoption of the district, which was required for a valid application.

Familiar Faces in Storm Coaching Staff Additions

    - January 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

January 30, 2014 - Indoor Football League (IFL) Sioux Falls Storm The Sioux Falls Storm and Head Coach Kurtiss Riggs are proud to announce the coaching staff for the 2014 season. Three of the four positions will feature coaches new to their role, but certainly not new to the Storm Organization. Long-time defensive lineman, Rachman Crable, and former defensive back and coach, Andre Fields will be joining the Storm's coaching ranks as defensive line coach and defensive backs/special teams coach, respectively. Former coach, Brian Hermanson, returns as defensive coordinator and former offensive lineman, Paul Keizer returns for his 5th season on the Storm sidelines. All four coaches carry impressive football resumes.

    PAUL KEIZER

    Offensive Line Coach- 5th Season

Paul Keizer will be entering his fifth season on the Storm coaching staff. Keizer, a former two-time all-star, played for Sioux Falls in 2007 and 2008. During Keizer's career, the Storm allowed only 18 sacks on 836 passing attempts. The Storm offensive line, led by Keizer, set a team record in rushing yards and total points during the 2007 season.

Keizer, a South Dakota State University alum, is currently a trainer at the Sanford POWER facility. He and his wife, April, live in Sioux Falls with their two children.

    RACHMAN CRABLE

    Defensive Line Coach- 1st Season

Rachman Crable returns to the Sioux Falls Storm in a new role. He will serve as the defensive line coach for the 2014 season. Crable played six seasons for the Storm recording 222 total tackles, 88.5 tackles for loss, 37 sacks, 9 forced fumbles and 12 blocked kicks. Having played for three other teams, Crable brings over 10 years of indoor experience to the coaching staff.

Crable is a graduate of Ball State University. He is currently living and working in Sioux Falls with his fiancee, Olympia Scott, and their two children.

    - January 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

OpenWays announcing another industry first: Global travelers can now use their own mobile phone as a room key and bypass the front desk using ANY of the 6.8 billion cell phones or smartphones worldwide with any mobile carrier worldwide; Mobile Key DUAL Bluetooth Smart is built on a unique multi-technology platform including: Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE), Near Field Communication (NFC), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), and Crypto Acoustic Credential (CAC)

Los Angeles -- OpenWays, the world leader in mobile key services for hotels and the developer of the hospitality industry's first ubiquitous mobile-based front desk bypass solution that enables travelers to use any of the 6.8 billion cell phones or smartphones worldwide as a mobile room key, is unveiling yet another industry first: Mobile Key DUAL with Bluetooth Smart (BT 4.0 BLE) -- the only Bluetooth-enabled mobile key solution on the market WITHOUT LIMITS to a particular mobile operating system. The Mobile Key DUAL solution combines OpenWays' Crypto Acoustic Credential (CAC) Technology and Bluetooth 4.0 Bluetooth Low Energy to enable ALL travelers to bypass traditional hotel check-in/-out processes and proceed straight to their rooms upon arrival and securely open their room locks (existing locks supplied by the major electronic lock vendors) with ANY mobile phone, including non-smartphones.

"OpenWays is leveraging the Bluetooth Smart technology platform utilized by our new residential line of smart devices, OKIDOKEYS, which launched earlier this month at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show, to strengthen a hotel's mobile strategy and future-proof its line-busting mobile key investment that enables modern guests to bypass the check-in /-out process," said Pascal Metivier, OpenWays founder and CEO. "Mobile Key DUAL with Bluetooth Smart can be deployed globally by hotels without having to worry about which mobile phone device or mobile operating system their guests are using or which electronic lock vendor installed their door hardware."

Twice the Functionality, NOT the Price Mobile Key by OpenWays securely delivers an encrypted Mobile Key "credential" to the right user anywhere in the world. Installation of the technology at hotels involves a simple and cost efficient upgrade to the hotel's existing room locks to include an OpenWays DUAL decoding device. The solution does not require any door modification (drilling) which protects the fire rating of a hotel's room doors.New locks that are factory made with the OpenWays DUAL module built in are also provided by major electronic lock vendors.

Mobile Key DUAL with Bluetooth Smart enables hotels to offer a front-desk bypass solution that contains Bluetooth Smart technologies while still being fully carrier and lock provider independent. It is highly secured and operates on trusted networks. Apple's iBeacon is also supported as part of the Bluetooth 4.0 BLE release.

"Mobile Key DUAL with Bluetooth Smart is guest centric while building a strong competitive advantage for any hotel," Metivier said. "Fewer guest transactions at the front desk means lower transaction costs and the ability to streamline staff to other areas of the hotel where guest-facing services are needed most. It also reduces costs associated with purchasing plastic keycards; because Mobile Key is made only of data, it is the greenest key on the planet. In addition to its interoperable nature, Mobile Key DUAL with Bluetooth Smart is user friendly, and it is helping hotels across the globe deliver heightened customer satisfaction, guest loyalty and brand recognition. As hospitality's mobile key pioneer, hotels looking to jump-start their mobile strategies would be wise to deploy this future-proof and investment-proof solution from OpenWays."

    An honor and a privilege

    - January 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MUSCATINE, Iowa If you're looking to find talented, hard-working teenagers in Muscatine, you don't have to look any farther than the Muscatine High School band room. In addition to regular band rehearsals and performances, 24 students brushed up on their scales and learned new music in preparation for honor band auditions this winter.

"All of the students who do honor bands are always intrinsically driven, work hard, practice, and are helpful to their peers," says MHS Band Director Jeffrey Heid. "They are some of the best students we get to teach!"

Teddy Van Winkle, a sophomore trombone player, explains the appeal of honor bands. "The first time you audition for an honor band...it's just to see if you can make it, to see if you're good enough. But after making SEIBA (Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association Honor Band) last year, I'm doing it more for the experience itself, the ability to make music with other good musicians."

Van Winkle started playing trombone in fifth grade because, "trombone was the only one I could make a decent sound on," he said with a laugh. Van Winkle also plays the contrabass for the MHS Orchestra and Jazz Band. "It's my thing," he says of music.

Jim Van Winkle, Teddys dad, said, Teddy was born into a musical family. But the hard work is all him. Ive made the opportunities available, but it has been up to him to develop his talents, and he has done an amazing job.

Gabby Hartman, a 14-year-old sophomore, will be traveling to New York to play with the 2014 High School Honors Performance Series from Feb. 6-10. She was selected from among thousands of students from Canada, the United States, and select international schools. The program includes rehearsals, a performance at Carnegie Hall, sightseeing and a Broadway show.

"It takes a lot of courage to compete or perform in front of an audience," said Karen Hartman, Gabby's mom. "We are proud of all of our children as they have developed the confidence to do this."

Hartman has been playing the bassoon for 3 1/2 years, and practices an hour every day, even on weekends. In warm weather, she sometimes plays outside. "Practicing is one of the best parts of my day," she says, smiling.

Hartman received the high honor of being selected for the All-State band last fall for the second time. She also participates in student council and enjoys singing, reading, writing and running.

Thomas Stackhouse is a senior tuba player who was selected for two honor bands this year. "In fifth grade we were trying out for which instrument we could play, and I was trying a bunch of mouthpieces, and the tuba was the only one I could actually fit my lips into to play," he says.

City pulls the plug on Pier 45

    - January 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Pier 45 at the Port of Rochester will not re-open, and the city instead will cancel the lease for the club and restaurant early.

From the beginning, the upscale city-backed restaurant was meant to be an experiment of sorts, to determine whether a restaurant was viable, build a market and possibly sell the business to a private enterprise.

I just felt with the construction happening down there and everything else, that it was just too much to take on, said Joe Floreano, executive director for the Rochester Riverside Convention Center, which the city hired to operate the restaurant.

The city broke ground in November on the first phase of construction, which will create an 85-slip deep-draft marina basin just west of the Terminal Building. The marina should open in 2015. As that is wrapping up, work could be getting underway on the first development parcel along Lake Avenue high-density, preferably owner-occupied housing, possibly a hotel and a mix of retail and office space.

Public investment, to be a mix of federal, state and city funds, is set at $20 million. Private investment should drive the project going forward, with a possible marina expansion to 157 slips and a total construction filling out what today is an expansive parking lot with between 280 and 430 housing units.

During the construction, lunch no longer made sense: The main customers were seniors who would have too far to walk. There would no longer be valet parking. Floreano also cited increased competition from Crescent Beach and restaurants at The Mall at Greece Ridge.

We cant handle the construction. We cant control the weather and, when everything is said and done, it was a weather-related restaurant, he said. But can a restaurant work? He said yes. I think it could, and maybe our concept wasnt right. Somebody else might have a better idea.

The city-owned terminal runs an annual deficit of more than $370,000. That does not include the nearly $80,000 loss anticipated this budget year at Pier 45.

Other leases at the building are not affected, according to the city, with California Rollin expected to remain open all winter and others to open in the spring. The first report on Pier 45s closing came from WHAM (Channel 13), which also stated that other leases were not being renewed.

IMAX site hires general contractor, construction underway

    - January 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Blacksburgs new combination IMAX theater, bowling alley and restaurant has reached its final stage of construction, after Frank Theatres recently secured a general contractor responsible for completing the First & Main development.

The Birmingham, Alabama-based construction company Stewart Perry plans to resume the project and build Frank Theatres CineBowl & Grille on top of the foundation pad laid by the Blacksburg APF Partners, the First & Main proprietors.

The owners of First & Mains contractual obligation was to prepare the site pad for construction. We delivered that back in October (2013), said attorney and representative of APF Partners Jeff Mitchell.

Once the pad was completed, construction on the site stopped as Frank Theatres searched for a construction company. Mitchell cited construction costs of the theater as cause for Frank Theatres delay in finding a contractor, but anticipates a lot of progress at the center this year.

The contract between Frank Theatres and Stewart Perry was officially signed following financial negotiations, according to Mitchell, just after the first of the year.

Construction is set to resume within the next few weeks, says Mitchell.

Stewart Perrys first meeting with the Town of Blacksburg is scheduled for Feb. 5.

We anticipate construction beginning soon after that meeting. A considerable amount of planning is going on right now to mobilize the construction equipment and complete the design of the building, Mitchell said.

Project manager Bruce Adams will travel from Birmingham to Blacksburg to attend planning meetings as a representative of Stewart Perry.

The commercial construction company has previously completed projects in Virginia, including the Grundy Town Center in Grundy, Va., and the Highlands shopping center in Bristol, Va.
