Rochester, N.Y. -- Its a popular place in the summer time, but Pier 45 served its final meal in September.
The operator of the restaurant in the Ferry Terminal said he has ended his contract with the city and will no longer run the restaurant.
Joe Floreano is Executive Director of the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. Floreano said he has enjoyed running the restaurant for the past five years but said it became too challenging to keep it going.
He said construction of the 17 million dollar marina project, closed the front entrance to the ferry terminal and took away valet parking for the restaurant. He said this makes it hard for customers to find their way into the restaurant. He also said competition from other restaurants was just too difficult. That marina project is in its first phase. It includes not only a public marina, but also a promenade, and eventually condominiums, restaurants and possibly a hotel. The first 85 marina slips are expected to open next spring.
Floreano told 13 WHAM News: It just wasnt worthwhile to open it for the season.
Floreano said he is proud of the restaurant, which has won many top honors, and will miss interacting with customers there, but will focus on running the Convention Center. He doesnt know what will happen with the ferry terminal or if the city will bring in someone else to operate the restaurant.
This isnt the only big change at the Port of Rochester. Other businesses at the port said they have heard their leases will not be renewed.
Tom Beaman said he is looking at other options and may re-locate his California Rollin sushi restaurant. It is one of the original businesses in the terminal and has survived many ups and downs over the years. Beaman could have bailed when the ferry sailed out of Rochester, but he said devoted customers kept him in business. He also held sushi classes to help pay his rent when business was down.

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 30, 2014
Operators in the Commercial Property Remodeling industry met weak demand over the five years to 2014 as a result of a high office rental vacancy rate and slowed consumer spending after the recession crushed corporate profit. With industry clients downsizing or closing, they were no longer in need of the industry's remodeling services. As a result, industry revenue is estimated to decrease at an annualized rate over the five-year period. With consumers returning to their prerecession spending habits since 2012, revenue is expected to increase in 2014.
With decreasing office rental vacancy, commercial property remodeling is on the rise. More new businesses are opening and many existing businesses are expanding, which is creating a growing need for the industry's commercial building addition, alteration and renovation services. This trend is anticipated to increase the number of industry establishments at an average annual rate in the five years to 2014. The number of establishments has rebounded from the period's largest decline in 2009 during the height of economic instability. Profit has also risen over the past five years, and this is due to increased revenue from emerging businesses and more efficient management of expenses, such as the greater use of subcontractors hired on a per-project basis in place of in-house salaried workers.
According to IBISWorld Industry Analyst Sally Lerman, The Commercial Property Remodeling industry is highly fragmented. Contractors primarily operate in regional and local markets, resulting in high regional competition. In general, given that contractors must be physically at the project site to complete remodeling work, it is difficult for companies to operate across the country. Only a very small number of contractors have the capital resources to operate nationally. As such, in 2014, the top four companies (including Belfor Holdings Inc., DKI Holdings LLC and Paul Davis Restoration) are anticipated to account for less than 10.0% of industry revenue, which indicates very low market share concentration.
In the five years to 2019, the industry is forecast to exhibit more steady growth, says Lerman. The office rental vacancy rate will decrease and consumer spending and corporate profit will increase as the economy continues to strengthen, providing businesses with more discretionary income for industry services. Additionally, increased interest in environmental sustainability will lead to growth in ecofriendly remodeling, stimulating rising demand for green building renovations and alterations. However, industry operators will need to be conscious of rising interest rates of commercial loans by which many of the industry's projects are financed, adding extra an extra cost to businesses' remodeling budgets. Revenue is expected to increase at an annualized rate over the period.

Amanda and Dylan Hower experienced freezing pipes and low water pressure for an entire week in their Brookline home earlier this month.
They asked a plumber and a representative of the Pennsylvania American Water Co. to come to the house to assess the problem.
Each suggested that we may have a clog/crack in our service line from the main [line] to our house, said Mrs. Hower, 27, a housing specialist for the Pittsburgh Housing Authority.
Because theyre enrolled in a gas line and waterline protection plan from Equitable Gas Co.s HomeWorks program, they called Equitable, relayed what the professionals had told them, emphasized that no work had been done and asked what would be covered by their plan.
When no one responded after two days, Mr. Hower called again. The 27-year-old software engineer for Maya Design couldnt believe what happened next.
A HomeWorks representative said their claim wasnt covered because HomeWorks couldnt confirm that the [service] line was broken or leaking.
My husband could not get any other information from him and didnt catch his name because he was rudely trying to disconnect the call as soon as he could, Mrs. Hower said. [He] did not even explain what led [HomeWorks] to deny the claim.
She believes HomeWorks contacted the water company and accepted as fact whatever it was told without any investigation on its part.
That didnt sit well with Mrs. Hower.
In our attempts to contact [the water company] over six days, they didnt even know that we were in their service area, kept saying there was a water main break when there wasnt and gave us other misinformation, she said.

Cellectis plant sciences the plant genome engineering company and subsidiary of Cellectis SA (Paris:ALCLS) has signed two new agreements with Bayer CropScience a subsidiary of Bayer AG and a leader in the areas of seeds crop protection and non-agricultural pest control on gene editing in plants. The agreements extend the companies existing partnership to introduce targeted modifications to selected plant genes and genomes. The financial terms of these agreements are not disclosed.
The first aim of this extended partnership is to collaboratively create commercial traits for the canola seed market using new technologies developed by Cellectis plant sciences. The second aim is to provide Bayer with access to technologies that enable the directed engineering of plant genomes such as gene stacking and targeted mutagenesis for the development of improved crops.
These novel technologies work efficiently in plant cells and will be an important tool to improve crops said Catherine Feuillet Head of Trait Research at Bayer CropScience. They facilitate the creation of specific modifications in the plant genome or genes and thus minimize the genetic footprint left behind.
These new agreements position Cellectis plant sciences as a key partner for Bayer CropScience commented Luc Mathis CEO of Cellectis plant sciences.
