The Minnesota Green Roofs Council (MGRC), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing green roofs as a building strategy in Minnesota, announced the election of its nine-member board for 2014. "The Councils leaders are a diverse, dynamic team with strong professional backgrounds and a shared commitment to green roofs for their many environmental and aesthetic benefits," said Karen Jensen, environmental analyst, Metropolitan Council (St. Paul, Minn.) and outgoing president of the MGRC. "I will continue to support their efforts because green roofs help improve the quality of our regions critical water resources, particularly by reducing stormwater runoff in highly urbanized areas."
Elected to serve as MGRCs executive committee are Kevin J. Slattery, president; Jeff Rosenquist, vice president; Angie Durhman, secretary; and Gary Leatherman, treasurer. Other returning board members include Angela Anderson, Erika Spande and Kent Harris. Kris Radford and Lucas Alm were elected as new board members.
Kevin J. Slattery is vice president, architectural sales, Edwards Sales (Chaska, Minn.), a manufacturers sales agent for insulation, waterproofing and building envelope products. Jeff Rosenquist is the founder and president of Rosenquist Construction (Minneapolis, Minn.), a commercial roofing contractor specializing in hot-applied waterproofing, built-up asphalt roofing and EPDM membrane systems. Angie Durhman is the founder and president of AD Greenroof, LLC (Minneapolis, Minn.), a green roof consulting firm that services all aspects of design, development, implementation and maintenance. She has been in the green roof industry for more than ten years. Gary Leatherman is a digital media producer, exhibit developer and owner of macMonkey Digital Studios (St. Paul, Minn.).
Angela Anderson is retired from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), where she served as the natural resources management program coordinator for the Division of Trails and Waterways. Before joining the DNR, she worked for private landscape architecture and construction firms in Germany, where she was involved in green roof projects. Erika Spande is a landscape design professional in the Twin Cities metro area and a certified master water steward with the Freshwater Society. Kent Harris is vice president and business developer with Arteka Companies (Shakopee, Minn.), a commercial landscaping, hardscaping and irrigation firm.
Kris Radford is president of KMR Design Group (Minneapolis, Minn.), a landscape solutions company specializing in commercial interior and exterior design and construction. Lucas Alm is a licensed architect and the principal of ALM Design Studio (St. Paul, Minn.), which provides integrated architectural design services for energy-smart and ecologically sound building. He teaches architecture design as an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Minnesota.
A green roof is a supplemental system that covers a structural roof with a layer of vegetation. Green roofs reduce stormwater runoff, filter air pollutants, sequester carbon dioxide, moderate the urban heat-island effect, add green space to the built environment, shade and insulate rooftops to improve buildings thermal performance, and extend the service life of structural roof systems.
The Minnesota Green Roofs Council maintains a Minnesota green roof database for installations throughout the state. According to Angie Durhman, to date the database includes 160 green roofs that total more than 900,000 square feet.
About the Minnesota Green Roofs Council (MGRC)
Founded in 2006, the Minnesota Green Roofs Council (MGRC) is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization that promotes green roofs as a building strategy in Minnesota. The MGRC seeks to support statewide and local initiatives so that accurate information about green roofs is accessible to all Minnesotans; the general public and leaders in government and the private sector are aware of the environmental issues that green roofs address; and supportive policies encourage the installation of green roofs. Donations to the MGRC are tax deductible and welcomed through giveMN.org. More information is available online at http://www.facebook.com/MinnesotaGreenRoofsCouncil and http://www.mngreenroofs.org.

RHINELANDER - Courtrooms in the Oneida County Courthouse will soon have a new look.
Renovations at the courthouse started a few weeks ago.
The biggest renovation was the new hearing room for family court.
The changes are part of new courtroom guidelines from the Supreme Court.
LuAnn Brunette, the Oneida County Courthouse facilities director says the renovations will benefit everyone.
"These are things that have been identified by members of the Supreme Court, as items that are necessary to keep us safe, efficient and functional hearing rooms, going in today's world," said Brunette. "We are trying to meet all of their requirements. And in order to use the room, we have to meet the requirements."
The Supreme Court guidelines also require there be more space between the judge, attorneys and witnesses.
The new hearing room will also get more cases seen that there wasn't room for the remodeling.
"The overall benefit for the taxpayers of Oneida County is that [were] trying to do these renovations as cost-effectively as we can, using as many walls and floor blueprints as we can," said Brunette. "But while still trying to keep in mind the efficiency, security and confidentiality concerns of the offices involved."
Besides the new hearing room for family court, there will be a larger waiting area for social services, client-attorney meeting rooms and chambers for visiting judges.

Michael Carroll is an Irish writer known for his books, comics, and short stories. His superhero centric New Heroes/Quantum Prophecy series for young readers debuted in 2006 and has several upcoming additions. In comics, he currently writes Jennifer Blood for Dynamite, Judge Dredd for 2000AD and the Judge Dredd Megazine.
I recently had a chance to discuss comics, writing, and superheroes with Michael. It's clear he is a life long science fiction fan and has a passion for the genre.
As a huge science fiction fan I'm always interested to hear how others developed their love for the genre. How did yours start?
Hard to say exactly when it began... It was so long ago now! One of my earliest memories is watching one of the moon landings on TV, possibly the very first one. This was on a tiny monochrome TV set that my parents borrowed for the occasion. If it was the first moon landing, then I would have been three years old.
My parents have always been voracious readers, something they've passed on to me and my three sisters, so we were always at the library. I'd pick books on science and astronomy, and that led to SF novels by people like Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and Ray Bradbury. Before long I concluded that science fiction was more interesting than real science. With science fiction, you got aliens. With real science, you got mathematics. No contest!
In the early 1970s I discovered Doctor Who through a two-page strip that appeared in a British comic, possibly TV21 or something of that nature. Jon Pertwee was the Doctor du jour, and I loved the comic enough to seek out the TV show. Later, I discovered that the local library stocked Doctor Who novelisations -- they were great! But some of them were kind of scary: I had to read them from behind the sofa.
The kid who lived next door introduced me to Batman and Superman (not personally: he didn't actually KNOW Batman and Superman) and that sparked my interest in superheroes. Somewhere along the way I encountered Star Trek, which I think was the first TV show I ever saw in colour (we were not a wealthy family - for years we didn't even HAVE a TV set!).
But the three biggest influences on me were... The UK Marvel comics. These were black-and-white reprints of Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, The Avengers and so on, and they were GREAT! Here in Ireland, we didn't have a comic-book industry of our own, so we had to make do with comics imported from the UK. Most of them weren't great: they were still mired in the barely-post-Victorian sensibilities. They seemed to be about war, sports or cheeky guttersnipes getting the better of the local park-keeper. Compared to them, the Marvel stuff was chocolate-chip ambrosia!
The next great influence was the British science fiction comic 2000AD, which arrived in early 1977, a few weeks before my eleventh birthday. Like most British comics, 2000AD was an anthology title, and one of the strips was Judge Dredd, who quickly became - and remains - my all-time favourite comic character. (Important nerdy trivia: Judge Dredd has been around longer than Star Wars!)
The third influence: In late 1979 2000AD also brought us The Stainless Steel Rat, an adaptation of the novel by Harry Harrison. This was my first introduction to Harry's work, and it completely blew me away -- so much that I went out and bought the book, then I bought the others in the series, and - gradually - all of Harry's other novels and collections. From his books I learned that it was possible to seamlessly combine action and humour - something far too few writers seemed to even attempt, let alone master.

A DISABLED mum was left bleeding when a brick crashed through her window and insult was added to injury when she had to wait 10 WEEKS for it to be replaced.
ANGER: Andrew Mitchell and Jacqueline Crawford.
Jacqueline Crawford, 42, was rushed to hospital after a thug smashed the glass at her Larkfield flat in November.
Her three-inch head wound has since healed but her living room window was still boarded up when she spoke to the Tele on Wednesday.
Landlords River Clyde Homes (RCH), who finally fixed the window the following day, have apologised for the lengthy delay.
Ms Crawford, who has epilepsy, recalled the frightening window smash incident to the Tele.
She said: I was sitting watching the news at about 6.15pm and my dog Casper started barking.
I told her to stop it as there was no one there, and then a brick came through the window.
I got a split head and a cut to my leg and had to go to hospital.

Aston Villa
John Percy: Paul Lambert's capture of Grant Holt finally added sorely needed experience to the squad while Ryan Bertrand's arrival on loan will hopefully be third time lucky in his hunt for a left-back. Lambert still wants a creative midfielder, but his move for Norwich's Wes Hoolahan appears doomed due to the bad blood that exists between the two clubs. Shifting Alan Hutton off the wage bill is a priority.
Panic rating: 4/10
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cardiff City
Graham Clutton: As soon as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer arrived in south Wales, he dipped into the transfer market to sign the highly rated Norwegian trio of Mats Moller Dahli, Jo Inge Berget and Magnus Wolff Eikrem. Now Solskjaer has gone in once again with Wilfried Zaha, Fabio and Kenwyne Jones on their way too. Smacks of panic signings some might say but the trio will bring quality and ambition too. The task now is to piece a new look side together and to pick up the necessary points in february that will keep last season's Championship winners in with a chance pf avoiding the drop.
Panic rating: 7/10
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chelsea
Matt Law: Chelsea have already been one of the busiest clubs this month and still have plenty of money in the bank from the 37 million sale of Juan Mata to Manchester United. The departures of Mata and Kevin De Bruyne have been offset by the arrivals of winger Mohamed Salah from FC Basel and central midfielder Nemanja Matic. A new striker may have to wait until the summer, but Chelsea could yet get drawn into a bidding war with United this week over Southampton's exciting young left-back Luke Shaw.
