LONDON Jan 23, 2014: Sales records have been beaten for another year at Nissan, with 118,061 cars sold in 2013, an increase of 11.5 percent on 2012 itself a record year. Including LCVs, Nissan sold 128,680 vehicles in the UK, up 11.0 percent from 115,970 in 2012.
Key to these record figures were the performance of two British-built stars: the Juke and Qashqai. Despite the imminent arrival of the second-generation model which has just arrived in UK showrooms the Qashqai continued its remarkable success story, notching up 50,211 sales, an incredible 9.9 per cent increase on 2012 and the first time the Qashqai has topped the 50,000 mark. The figures consolidated the Qashqais position as the UKs sixth best-selling car.
The Juke also enjoyed a stellar year, with sales up from 28,862 in 2012 to 37,488 in 2013 a 29.9 per cent increase. Now in its third year, the British designed and built supermini crossover was boosted by the arrival of a Nismo version that added a sporting edge to the range.
The all-electric LEAF also had a busy year up from 699 sales in 2012 to 1,812 in 2013. As part of Nissans growth plan for electric vehicles, European production of a revised LEAF started at Nissans Sunderland production facility in April, with the model range growing substantially.
Nissans remarkable sales success was set against the backdrop of a record year at Nissan's Sunderland manufacturing facility, which broke the 500,000 unit production barrier for the second year in a row, building an incredible 501,756 vehicles.
NissanLCVs also proved popular with buyers in 2013, with 10,619 light commercial vehicles sold an increase of 4.7 per cent. The NV200 and Navara were the two biggest sellers, notching up 4,230 and 4,484 sales respectively.
Jim Wright, Managing Director at Nissan GB said: These figures prove that Nissan is continuing to reap the rewards of hard work and intelligent planning. For the Qashqai to break the 50,000 sales mark in its sixth year of production is testament to its remarkable design and value.
Im also immensely proud of our other British success stories, namely the Juke, new Note and LEAF. The Jukes performance proves that British buyers value bold and innovative design, while the Note and LEAF are welcome additions to the Sunderland stable. To break the 500,000 production barrier for a second year is incredible, especially as the plant has been busy integrating new facilities for new Note and LEAF. With the new Qashqai rolling off the lines, Im sure that 2014 will be another year to remember.

HACKENSACK, N.J. David Shanks longed for a bigger house. A roomy kitchen was on the list he loved to cook and had a hard time whipping up specialties for his wife and two daughters in their old narrow one.
But his No. 1 priority was a shower stall in the bathroom large enough for him to maneuver without jamming his elbows against the tiles.
Weve always had a small house, including one small bathroom that I shared with three women, said Shanks, a retired publishing executive. I really wanted a shower where I could stretch my arms and not knock my elbows every time I moved.
After the girls moved out after college graduation, Shanks and his wife, Elizabeth, were done with tuition bills and their mortgage was paid off.
Its a time when many empty nesters downsize, or find their dream home, or both.
But the Shankses are one of the many couples who decide to keep the houses where they raised their children, remodeling them into their dream home. Many have features in their current houses that they dont want to give up, and they finally have the time and money to spend on such indulgences as walk-in closets, roomy master baths and cozy breakfast nooks.
Like many, the Shankses wanted to remain in their hometown Tenafly because, among other things, it provided an easy commute for David Shanks to his job in New York City.
Our ties are really in Tenafly and we were very content to stay where we were, Elizabeth Shanks said. Our friends thought we were crazy to do this at this time of our lives but we renovated and put everything into the house that we wanted.
The Shankses daughters didnt want any changes to their childhood home they didnt want their parents moving out of it, nor did they want any renovations.
They moved into their own places and we were left with this tiny kitchen and a shower that gave me bruises, Shanks said. They wanted a shrine to their childhood.

This is a rendering of the proposed legislative office building, to be built next to the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul. (Courtesy of Minnesota Department of Administration)
Authorization for a new state Senate office building fit with the general purpose of the tax bill into which it was inserted last spring, and in any case, former state Rep. Jim Knoblach has no right to sue to stop construction, an attorney for the state argued Wednesday in Ramsey County District Court.
Judge Lezlie Ott Marek heard more than an hour's worth of arguments from both sides on Knoblach's suit and said afterward that she would issue a written ruling as soon as possible.
The state is pushing for dismissal and has asked for a quick ruling because construction of the $90 million office and parking project north of the Capitol is on a tight schedule. State budget officials have said they won't sell the bonds for the project until the lawsuit is resolved.
Knoblach sued in late October, saying the inclusion of provisions for a new Senate office building in the tax bill violated the state constitution, which stipulates "no law shall embrace more than one subject, which shall be expressed in its title."
The purpose of the stipulation is so citizens will know how lawmakers vote on separate items of public business, said Erick Kaardal, attorney for Knoblach. In this case, he said, it means new spending for a state building doesn't belong in a bill focused on taxation. He argues it was inserted there because legislative leaders didn't want to try to get the 60 percent supermajority required for capital bonding projects.
Kaardal called it a "prototypical case of legislative logrolling."
Knoblach is arguing that the project be stopped and that money be paid back. The office-building provision in the tax bill authorized a $3 million appropriation in fiscal year 2014 for design work.
But the legal test is that subjects in the same law have to be connected only by a "mere filament," said John Garry of the attorney general's office. The common thread here is that the tax bill and office project both involve raising revenue for government operations, Garry said. In the case of the office building, it's through lease revenue bonds.
"This is not a complicated issue at all," Garry said.

The developers of a northeast Wichita office park plan to begin construction on a third building March 1.
Gary Oborny and Chad Stafford of Occidental Management said the two-story, 46,000-square-foot building will be the largest of the three buildings at Offices at Cranbrook, a Class A office park at 10111 E. 21st St.
Oborny, Occidentals chairman and CEO, said occupancy at the parks two, 23,000-square-foot single story buildings is 71 percent. He said that occupancy level triggered the companys plans to start construction on the third building.
Were very happy with the response from the business community to the new park, he said.
As for tenants for the new building, were working on them right now, Oborny said.
The new building is the developments largest because it will be two stories. He said the company eventually plans to build a fourth building, but at 10,000 square feet it will be Cranbrooks smallest.
The third building will feature covered balconies on the second floor and covered patios for ground-level offices, both of which will look out on the developments nearly 2-acre lake.
Spaces in the third building can be configured for as little as 4,000 square feet up and as large as 23,000 square feet, Stafford said. There also will be a partial basement for tenant storage, they said.
Spangenberg Phillips Tice is the architect. Selection of a general contractor is pending.
Stephanie Wiens is Occidentals lead leasing agent on the building.

This brick Tudor-style home in the sought-after Cliff Estates, one of Wellesleys oldest and most elegant neighborhoods, was listed as a mansion in town records in the 1920s.
Today, the stately home still can be described as a mansion with all of the architectural richness of its time but with equally luxurious updates and an addition that blend new and old in perfect harmony.
Meticulously maintained, the house has had only three owners, all of whom have lovingly cared for this home since it was built in 1929. Renovations have been thoughtfully planned to balance the homes elegance with comfort and everyday livability.
The 14 rooms include magnificent formal rooms for entertaining which all open to an expansive patio, a chefs kitchen and family room, a sunroom, a library, six bedrooms, and a walkout lower level billiard room and exercise room.
The brick carriage house, built in 1934, is equal to the home in its amenities with two bedrooms, a living room and a bath above the three-car garage.
Donna Maley and Lynn Donahue, listing agents with Benoit Mizner Simon & Company, are marketing the 7,700-square-foot home on a .90-acre lot for $3,595,000.
The home has a beautiful street presence with its brick exterior, stone trim and elegant windows, including a diamond-pane leaded window over the arched front door. Set back from the street with a curved motor entrance and a side driveway that leads to the carriage house, the home is surrounded by mature trees and plantings. The rounded arches in the windows and peaked arch of the front door are a preview of the lovely arched doorways on the interior of the home.
The details in the millwork, leaded glass, stone mantels and custom iron railings and finishes in this home are exquisite.
The foyer sets the tone of the home with its 200-year-old stone floor imported from England, arched doorways, and wide staircase with a wrought-iron railing. The staircase is spectacular with a wide mid-landing with a diamond-pane leaded glass triple window and a curved second floor landing and wrought-iron railing.
The front-to-back foyer opens directly into a charming wood-paneled den with a fireplace with a stone mantel, bookcases with leaded glass cabinets and double French doors that open to a patio.
