    Diverting discussion from slash pile

    - January 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Former B.C. Hydro environmental consultant John Kelly says the Crown Corporation deserved praise for right-of-way clearing practices in the 1980s and 1990s, but a section of the new Interior-to-Lower Mainland Line failed to avoid environmental damage.

Wed driven to Burke Mountain in Coquitlam recently to view the clearing for towers 5071 to 5075, the tail end of the ILMs 250 kilometers of towers and cables from Merritt.

Kelly wanted to see what this site looked like after being frustrated by what he found at Millionaire Creek in the Malcolm Knapp UBC Research Forest in Maple Ridge.

An environmental audit in June identified damage to the coho producer. It still hadnt been repaired in November as spawning occurred.

Other steps to mitigate impacts reseeding of scraped off vegetation, and water diversion channels were just being taken.

Luckily, sunny weather delayed the rainy season.

At tower 5071, at the base of the mountain, Kelly noted more failures to avoid damage, and mitigate impacts. Hed later report them to Maple Ridge stakeholders, including ARMS, the research forest and Rod Stott, environment officer for Maple Ridge.

Trees were felled and left across a stream, he noted.

Kelly thought theyd been cut a year ago, but the mess is still here and the clearing contractor is gone. This is very poor construction practice. Damage occurred when some trees were pulled out [by skidders].

ARMS favors the use of helicopters to remove trees more expensive, but less disruptive.

Growth, prosperity for the Green Horse

    - January 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MASTER Aldric V. Dalumpines. KIMBERLY DELA CRUZ

The Year of the Green Horse is galloping your way, carrying with it good fortune that represents growth and prosperity.

The horse symbolizes progress, a speedy transportation to your destination. Where theres a horse, theres a road; where theres a road, theres civilization.

Theres so much wealth coming that feng shui master Aldric V. Dalumpines called 2014 the Year of the Greenest Horse. But is a windfall blowing down your alley?

Master Aldric said animal signs on a streak of good luck are the Pig, Snake, Tiger, Sheep and Rooster.

The Dog will have its bouts of ups and downs, while the Rat, Monkey, Rabbit, Dragon, Ox and Horse will be the least fortunate.

Only two Horses are exemptedthe Wood Horse, who will be in its element, so to speak; and the Water Horse, since water is money.

    Generic charms

There are, however, ways to deflect bad luck. Feng shui is like a program for getting that chi (universal energy); it can alter your destiny. You can make your fortune through feng shui, master Aldric said.

The best way to shrug off bad energy is to travel. Travel distance doesnt matter; what counts is the frequency. Driving your children to school regularly, for instance, is good enough. Negative chi is like a drone, he said. The less you stay put in one place, the better your chances of dodging its bullets. Each time you travel, he said, you attract opportunities.

MANILA People who are born on certain dates will get a lot of good luck in the coming Year of the Wooden Horse, a feng shui expert said.

According to Hong Kong-based Joseph Chau Kam Shing, those who were born between November 11 and February 3 will have good fortune this year, regardless of their career.

Some of the local celebrities whose birthdays are within that period are Ai Ai delas Alas (November 11), Ariella Arida (November 20), Joross Gamboa (November 28), Paolo Ballesteros (November 29), Jessy Mendiola (December 3), Donita Rose (December 5), Hero Angeles (December 8), Carlos Agassi (December 12), Vhong Navarro (January 4), Melissa Ricks (January 9), Piolo Pascual (January 12) and Alex Gonzaga (January 16),

Im not familiar [with the entertainment industry in the Philippines], but the person who is born in November 11 until February 3 will do well this year, Chau told ABS-CBNnews.com and select members of the media after his Chinese New Year press conference at the Mandarin Oriental Manila early this week.

Not only in show business, but also in other careers, any career, he added.

Those who are born on other dates, however, may still look at their animal signs or resort to using charms and other items to enhance their luck, Chau said.

He noted that the Chinese jade can improve overall luck this year, as well as the colors green, red, pink, violet, peach and maroon.

    Lucky businesses

Chau said businesses related to the fire element such as trading, gasoline stations, restaurants and electronics will generally be a hit this 2014, adding that the Year of the Wooden Horse is a great time to invest in real estate.

Some Carson Residents Oppose Proposed Ban On Chain-Link Fences

    - January 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CARSON (CBSLA.com) Some Carson residents are against a new city Planning Commission proposal that would prohibit the use of chain-link fences in residential neighborhoods and business areas.

If passed, people would have three years to comply to the new rules.

Residents Penny Subiate and Douglas Chaney are concerned about how people are going to come up with the money to replace their current fences.

I can understand the beautification that they want to do, but I think they are creating a hardship on some of the residents, Chaney said.

Im retired. My husband is retired. There are only so many dollars coming in. Do I have to make a loan I cant afford because the city doesnt like my fence? Subiate said.

In addition, residents are alarmed because its easier to tag certain kinds of fences with graffiti.

We border right up against big-time gangs, and they just love to come and write. They write on the sidewalks, they write on the fences, they write on the side of your house. Its ugly, Subiate said.

Carson Mayor Jim Dear said while he supports the ban on some business fencing, he said there was a mix-up and residential fences were not supposed to be part of the discussion.

That was not my initiative, it was never part of the initiative from the mayors office, so there is a little disconnect there, he said.

Subiate and Chaney plan to circulate a petition in opposition of the ban. They will present it to the Planning Commission at a Feb. 11 meeting.

    Anger at another Serco escape

    - January 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Alex Massey, Phoebe Wearne and Angela Pownall The West Australian January 22, 2014, 4:47 am

Angry Northam residents say they do not feel safe after another escape from the Serco-staffed Yongah Hill immigration detention centre yesterday.

Four detainees broke out, sparking a big manhunt and calls for the "unscalable" perimeter fence to be upgraded.

Three were soon captured after climbing at least three fences about 3pm. The other man was found later.

It was the fourth breakout since August and two of the 14 escapees are still on the run.

In a statement through a spokesman, Immigration and Border Protection Minister Scott Morrison expressed strong dissatisfaction at the performance of the Yongah Hill centre.

He had asked the department to review detainee placements there to ensure those at a higher risk of absconding were in more secure facilities.

Northam Shire president Steven Pollard said the escapes proved people could climb the fences "relatively easily".

It seemed the fences could be scaled in a minute or less, which made it difficult for Serco staff to respond fast enough.

Mr Pollard said the main perimeter fence was meant to be "unscalable", which meant it had no hand holds or attachment points and the top leant inwards.
