FORT MYERS, FL -
Today is demolition day for the old Fort Myers library.
After 6 years of planning, the site on Central Avenue will be home to a new 34-thousand square foot fire station for the Fort Myers Fire Department.
"To see this building coming down it opens it up for us to move forward," said Scott Wirth, Division Chief of Operations.
Each piece of the building structure will broken up into it's own scrap pile--from there, it will be towed away for recycling.
For Terri Crawford, the site is a view of mixed emotions.
"It's a bitter sweet moment when you saw the first part of the building come down. This library has been such a part of the community for almost 34 years," Terri Crawford, Deputy Director, Lee County Library System.
With a brand new Fort Myers library just blocks away, Crawford is looking forward to seeing the finished product.
"I'm excited to see what it's going to look like," Crawford said.
Demolition will wrap up by the end of this week.

THE VILLA Perez Mansion in Lucena City before it was demolished. DELFIN T. MALLARI JR.
The demolition of the Villa Perez Mansion, a popular historical landmark in Lucena City, to clear the way for the construction of a schoolbuilding has heightened public concern over the fate of other heritage sites and structures in Quezon province.
When we lose our past, we lose our identity, our tradition and our self-respect, Rogg Villar, a financial analyst and graduate of Quezon Provincial High School (QPHS), posted in the Facebook page of the schools alumni, QPHS Mahal Ko.
Many other graduates of QPHS, one of the oldest secondary schools in the province, have expressed similar heartbreaking comments in the social network site. Amelia Solana, a retired high school teacher, cried when she saw the old, three-story Villa Perez going down in pieces. She used to bring her students to the old mansion along Quezon Avenue for a glimpse of Quezons colorful past.
The demolition job of the wood-and-concrete structure started on Jan. 2 and took only a week to finish. A six-story building of Systems Technology Institute (STI) is to rise from the site after the groundbreaking program on Jan. 9.
The owners should have preserved it with the help of the local and national government, Solana said.

TORONTO -- You may have selected paint colours, tiles and finishes, but plans to gear up for a home renovation can quickly grind to a halt if you haven't ensured key health and safety measures are in place.
A U.S. Centers for Disease Control report released earlier this month focused on a case in Quebec where 14 people fell ill with a pneumonia-like infection after the exterior brick of a century-old house was removed as part of a renovation.
Workers, residents of the home and neighbours have recovered after developing symptoms of a fungal disease called histoplasmosis, which is carried in the droppings of bats and birds. Infection symptoms include high fever, coughing, chest pain and shortness of breath.
Cases of histoplasmosis infection are rare in Canada and usually involve construction work that stirs up clouds of dried-up aerosolized spores that people end up inhaling. In the Quebec case, workers had been given masks to wear but didn't do so continuously due to hot weather.
Whether homeowners are embarking on a do-it-yourself project or enlisting a professional, here are tips from experts for making health and safety a top priority throughout the home renovation process.
Conduct a thorough assessment
Cory Norris, chief project estimator at Greater Toronto Contractors, said the No. 1 determining factor as to whether there will be problems with the home is its age. They also look at the state of the home, with visible damage among the red flags.
"If you can see water damage, if paint is peeling off walls here and there ... if it hasn't been maintained well, they probably have ignored any kind of problems that have been going on as well: rodents, bats, for example, mice ..."
Norris said workers will go into the attic and lift up some insulation where mice, rodents and squirrels "love to make their home."
