A U.S. court has ordered local business review website Yelp to reveal the names of seven of its anonymous reviewers.
The order follows a lawsuit filed by a firm called Hadeed Carpet Cleaning, which suspected that some of the reviews placed online about it were made up.
The only way for Hadeed to find out whether this was the case was to subpoena Yelp for the information, the Washington Times reported. Hadeed pressed, Yelp resisted, and chose to ignore a county court order, and an additional court was charged with ruling.
The Virginia state Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the carpet cleaning company and insisted that Yelp must reveal the names of those users that otherwise would have remained anonymous.
"In its complaint, Hadeed alleged that it tried to match the negative reviews with its customer database but could find no record that the negative reviewers were actually Hadeed customers. Consequently, Hadeed alleged that the negative reviewers were not actual customers; instead, the Doe defendants falsely represented themselves to be customers of Hadeed," said the court's ruling.
"Hadeed's complaint further alleged that the negative comments were defamatory because they falsely stated that Hadeed had provided shoddy service to each reviewer."
Yelp will now have to come up with the names of the reviewers, while Hadeed Carpet Cleaning will also get $1,000 toward its legal costs.
The reviews looked dodgy to Hadeed because they came from areas where it doesn't operate (e.g., New Jersey and Washington).
While it is usually permissable to be anonymous, the courts do not look favorably on defamation. If these "reviewers" weren't customers of the company, then the negative reviews could not possibly be truthful and might be libel. The court ordered Yelp to comply in order to ascertain whether this is the case.
Yelp posted on its blogin response to the announcement. It said that litigation is not a viable alternative to customer service and that an overreaction to a bad review can be worse than a bad review itself.

Liverpool, NY -- The Humane Association of Central New York took to social media last week to ask for help after a pipe burst and flooded parts of the animal shelter damaging the ceiling, the shelter's supply of cat litter and the furnace.
The community sprung into action. Community members made donations and dropped off containers of cat litter. Local businesses also jumped in to help. A crew from Stanley Steemer arrived almost immediately to clean up the water.
The Humane Association also received a large donation from Angelo Chiodo, the owner of Chiodo Heating, Air Conditioning and Duct Cleaning. Chiodo, in conjunction with Goodman Manufacturing, donated four new furnaces and the installation to the shelter.
"Angelo Chiodo was simply amazing," Shelter Director Christine McNeely said in a news release. "He arrived at the shelter as soon as he heard we had a flood, asking us what he could do to help. He came back the following morning and serviced our furnaces for free and determined they were in catastrophic failure. We were aware that was happening, but didn't have the funds to replace the furnaces. Mr. Chiodo came back the following morning with a donation of four new furnaces and installation."
Installation of the furnaces starts today, McNeely said.
McNeely said many other companies and individuals have come to the need of the Humane Association. Many have offered to demo and repair not only the areas affected, but the connecting areas that are also in very poor condition.
"This disaster has turned into a community-wide effort to help the shelter," McNeely said. "We are extremely thankful to the community who support us year after year."
McNeely said the shelter has insurance and hopes that most of the damage will be covered, but the shelter is still in need. In addition to paying for the insurance deductible, the shelter is still in need of electrical, masonry and additional HVAC duct work that needs replacement.
Donations can be made online. Click on the "Please, Donate!" flag on the screen. Donations can also be mailed to the Humane Association of CNY, 4915 1/2 West Taft Road, Liverpool, NY 13088.
The Humane Association of CNY is a no-kill, not-for-profit, animal shelter housing anywhere from 200 to 400 animals on a daily basis since 1966. The Humane Association is completely privately funded.

A crack in a South Minneapolis retaining wall is becoming a pit... a money pit. Homeowner Elizabeth Howell was originally cited for it back in 2008. The cost to fix it would be anywhere from $70,000 to $90,000.
Howell says the retaining wall is the city's property and after five years, dozens of letters to city officials and multiple court cases a Hennepin County judge finally agreed with her in late December.
Now Howell is waiting for the snow to melt and for a public works crew to come and fix it.
"The fact that the city dug its heels in and kept pushing me to fix it when it wasn't my responsibility, I find that outlandish," said Howell.
Minneapolis City attorney Susan Segal says they have to take a hard, careful look at cases like this. She says the dispute lasted so long because they were defending the city's interests and taxpayer dollars.
"We have to look closely and make sure we are doing our due diligence," Segal said.

A mold problem was discovered in Greens Farms Elementary in Connecticut. But according to a report from westport-news.com published on January 09, 2013, it was only found out when water repairs in the school were implemented. In connection with it, My Cleaning Products shared a mold removal tip how the public could prevent it from becoming a hidden problem that causes a lot of huge spending.
The report said that the bursting of a fire sprinkler in January 06 was the cause of the water repairs that needed in the school, My Cleaning Products related. It brought quite a damage and particularly left the district with $25,000 to take care of for the mold remediation process, it detailed.
Based on the report, the fungus was specifically found in the catwalk of the section affected by the burst. And as of January 13, MCP shared that the mold cleanup was ongoing while the area was contained and access to it was limited to protect the students. All work was expected to be finished next week.
Here's an excerpt from the post Mold Discovered in Greens Farms Elementary School by My Cleaning Products.
On January 6, a water damage occurred in Greens Farms Elementary School in Connecticut. A fire sprinkler pipe burst and caused quite a damaged. But the problem did not end there.
While water repairs were being done on the damaged section, mold was found in its catwalk area along with lead in the hallway. Good thing that a test for asbestos turned out negative, said the school district's business manager, Elio Longo.
The late discovery of mold at Greens Farms Elementary School is a proof that although it isn't visible, the fungus could have already started an infestation, said My Cleaning Products. That, it stated, could then bring in a lot of structural and financial problems.
Because of that, MCP stressed that it is imperative to detect and kill mold as early as possible. To do that, it stated that one must open his eyes to mold signs. Additionally, it said that a person must prepare mold remediation solutions to get the treatment done promptly.
Of all the mold removal products though, the company asserted that its Molderizer and Safe Shield are the best. It explained that they make the right choices because they are both effective and safe.
