San Diego Chargers vs. Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium. Charger fans lose their minds in the rain as the Chargers defeat the Bengals 27-10.
Fifty years ago Sunday the Chargers rode their magic carpet to San Diegos only major sports championship when they turned the Patriots coats and shredded them in the AFL title game. Then it disappeared into the blue yonder for, oh, about a half-century.
Is it time for more magic? They will tell you: Why not us? These San Diegans seem to know no fear and have shown they can play with anybody, location and weather be damned.
Somehow, someway, the Chargers in early December again found a ticket to the carpet, and theyve have been riding it since, winning five straight and getting incredible service from dame fortune.
They didnt get lucky Sunday. They were good.
Chargers beat Bengals 27-10
The Chargers were 7-point underdogs when they flew the thing into Cincinnati for Sundays AFC Wild Card playoff game, and despite some early turbulence, managed to keep it on course. Dominating as the cold rain began to fall, they took over the second half and swept the Bengals under the rug, 27-10.
How high can the magic carpet fly? Can it get up to 5,280 feet, to sprinkle dust on mile-high Denver? Can it wrap itself around Peyton Mannings long neck?
Why not? It did before, on Dec. 12 to be exact, when San Diego went to Colorado and handed the Broncos and Peyton their only loss at home. The carpet may be a bit fickle, but it probably hasnt forgotten how to get there. And the Chargers over the years have proven to be a pain in that Manning neck.
Anyway, there still life, another day of play ahead. Theyll be in Denver next Sunday to meet the Broncos in the AFC Divisional Playoff Game, and they probably will be a 10-point underdog. But if the Chargers have proven one thing over this crazy season, its that they can beat good teams away from home.

CHICAGO (CBS) Four people reportedly were taken to hospitals after a Metra Rock Island train hit a concrete retaining wall while pulling into the station downtown.
Metra passenger Jack Lavallee said he felt a big jolt when the Rock Island Line train arrived at the LaSalle Street station around 6:30 a.m., and the train hit the metal and concrete end stop.
According to unconfirmed dispatch reports, four people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. A total of 15 people were treated from the train.
A spokesperson for Metra said the cause of the crash was under investigation Monday morning.
Metra was experiencing a number of problems and delays due to equipment and mechanical problems caused by the cold, including frozen switches.
Also, a Metra train clipped a semi-trailer truck in Niles, at Touhy Avenue, around 6 a.m. That crash caused a 90-minute delay on the Milwaukee District North Line.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- When stones and chunks of a hillside retaining wall on Notre Dame Academy's property came crashing down onto a section of Victory Boulevard sidewalk, in Silver Lake between Eddy Street and Forest Avenue, the day before Thanksgiving, the cascade caused $1,000 worth of damage to the passenger-side front door panel of Anthony Sabatino's brand-new 2013 Lincoln SUV.
It could have been much worse, and not only for his vehicle, he said. Residents of nearby apartment buildings park along that stretch of Victory Boulevard, and "people walk along there with strollers and kids."
Sabatino said he was outraged that, after the incident, Notre Dame "roped it off and called it a day," without removing the rocks, rubble, and downed small tree.
The mini-landslide was caused when part of a retaining wall halfway up the hill became dislodged, Sister Patricia Corley, president of Notre Dame Academy, explained to the Advance on Dec. 31.
The wall, located behind Notre Dame's elementary school, is 85 feet long and two-and-a-half to five-feet high, she added. "The edge of that wall, due to freezing and melting, became dislodged."
Following the incident, Notre Dame signed a contract with a mason, but clearing the mess and working on the site was delayed by a combination of poor weather and the holidays, Sister Corley said.
The mason has since "cleaned all the debris and loose rocks, and put up a wooden barrier" to intercept anything that might fall in the future, she said in a Jan. 2 update.
The mason will return in the spring, to install reinforcing bars into the retaining wall, she added.
Sister Corley acknowledged the "challenge" of maintaining the hillside.
"Over the past few years, we've engaged masons to fix, maintain, and fill in," walls on the property, she said on Dec. 31. "We're very much aware of our obligation, and very much on top of it."

Gujarat High Court today allowed implementation of the no-confidence motion passed by majority members of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) against incumbent chairman Vipul Chaudhary. With this nod from the High Court Chaudhary could be on his way out. However, he has options to appeal before a division bench and the Supreme Court.
As many as 13 out of 16 voting members voted in favour of the no-confidence motion against Chaudhary on December 5, 2013, during board meeting of GCMMF. The members have alleged that the no-trust motion was brought because they were suspicious of Chaudhary's functioning and suspected that his way of administration was not in interest of the federation. They further held that motion was need to safeguard the interest of three million milk producers of Gujarat.
After the no confidence motion was passed the GCMMF had approached the High Court in accordance with directions of the Supreme court issued in December last year while hearing the plea of Chaudhary challenging the no-confidence motion.
During arguments GCMMF had argued that majority of members had supported the no-confidence motion against Chaudhary and hence it should be implemented. While Chaudhary's lawyers argued that there was no provision of passing a no-confidence motion against the chairman in the bye-laws of GCMMF, nor was there any in the Gujarat Cooperatives Society Act.
Today, Justice Paresh Upadhyay hearing the case held that GCMMF could put into effect the no confidence motion against Chaudhary. However, Justice Upadhyay stayed implementation of the no confidence motion till January 11 on request of Chaudhary's lawyers seeking time to approach higher court.
"The applicant Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF) is at liberty to implement the Resolution dated December 5, 2013 expressing no confidence in Vipul Chaudhary, as the Chairperson of the Federation," the court ordered.
The court also referred the petition of Chaudhary, challenging the October 25, 2013, meeting to discuss the no confidence motion against him, to the division bench on various law points. The matter will now be assigned to the concerned division bench by the Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court.
"On the principal contention of the petitioner (Chaudhary), that in absence of any provision in the Gujarat Co-operative societies Act, 1961, no confidence motion could not have been considered and passed against him, the matter is referred to the Division Bench," the order further stated. The division bench will consider if the three judgements of the Gujarat High Court, that had held that "even in absence of any specific provision in the principal statue, no confidence motion can be brought and considered to remove any elected office bearer," was overrulled by the Supreme Court.
Commenting of Chaudhary's opposition to meeting to discuss no confidence motion against him, court said, "On going through the documents on record, this Court finds that this contention (of Chaudhary), though not unknown to law, is more out of frustration."
Chaudhary is facing the heat by a majority of board members over mismanagement in Mehsana District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union, which is also headed by him, as well as for meeting Congress vice-chairman Rahul Gandhi with an eye on National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) top job. The Mehsana Union also came under GCMMF's attack for constant decline in milk procurement, setting up 9 lakh liters per day milk processing plant and establishment of 30 lakh liters per day of milk packaging plant at Daruheda (Haryana) plant with an investment of Rs. 300 crore.

Bathroom remodeling either fills you with thoughts of clean, gleaming white surfaces or of a half-assembled disaster. Maybe both images are true. Let's follow the steps of a bathroom remodeling project. 1. How Far Do You Want to Go? Surface Alterations. At the easy end of the scale, you may like the general layout and size of the bathroom and the structure supporting the bathroom (joists, walls, etc.) are sound. The mantra of the surface-level bathroom remodeler is "cover, not replace." There is no shame at all in wanting to do a surface-level bathroom remodel. Change Layout. More difficult: the structural elements are still fine and you want to make surface alterations, but you also want to change the layout around. Complete Tear-Out/Remodel. Now we're at the end of the difficult scale. You want to do all of the above, but 50 years of accumulated moisture has rotted away the joists and wall studs, and the window is falling out.
At this point, too, consider the general timetable for bathroom remodeling and decide if this is something you think you want to go through.
Even though most bathrooms are small, the cost comes from the intensive amount of sub-contracting you may have to do (i.e., plumbers, electricians) and the expensive elements involved (fixtures, cabinetry, etc.). Of the many methods of funding your bathroom renovation, perhaps the most common way is with a home equity loan. While looking at financing, you may wish to also think about ways to save on your bathroom remodeling costs.
If the worst thing is a few cracks, it is possible to self-repair your acrylic or fiberglass shower/tub for very little money. For many homeowners, though, the surface might be stained and discolored, so tub refinishing would be in order.
Got problems that go beyond repair and refinishing? It is possible to install a bathtub liner - sort of like an "overcoat" for your icky tub. Should those methods prove ineffective, you will need to go all the way and build a tiled shower. Alternatively and with a bit less fuss, you can install a pre-fabricated acrylic or fiberglass shower/tub. Pre-fab shower/tubs need no on-site building, because they have been fabricated in the factory - though make sure that you do not buy any unit too big to fit through your doorways.
