Children who already had the condition have seen improvements in their intelligence levels and muscle strength after receiving the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) with the office's assistance.

Five years ago, it was discovered that 20 children in the tambon had been born with the condition due to the lack of iodine-relevant foods. The NHSO responded with its pilot programme, together with help from the TSH provision project. The condition was eradicated and the general condition of the children improved, said Amnuay Intharathirat, head of Na Phoo Tambon Administrative Organisation in Udon Thani's Phen district.

Under a joint assistance scheme with Kasetsart University and the Department of Medical Sciences, local chicken farms have been provided with cheap enhanced feed that enriches eggs with iodine. The average daily cost of the feed is only Bt1 per hen and provides each household with four eggs to eat each day.

The project manager at Naphoo Hospital, Pannawit Suphaphote, said families were now being supplied with five hens, which ensured that all members, including newborns, children and pregnant women, had sufficient supplies of iodine-enriched eggs to prevent the condition and other iodine deficiency disorders.

The hens also bring in extra income gained through the sale of leftover eggs - of around Bt400 per month.

In the year since this scheme began, no new child victims with the condition have emerged, while older people supplied with the iodine-enriched eggs are showing signs of improvement in their health.

Apart from the chicken feed, the scheme promotes hydroponics that grow minerals-added vegetables for all households in the tambon.

Pannawit said the 12,513-strong tambon, where this NHSO-assisted scheme was commenced as a pilot project, now reports no IDD cases, Some 150 pregnant women, 112 others who are breastfeeding, and 835 children aged up to 15 years are provided with at least three iodine-enriched eggs a week, thanks to the NHSO initiative and subsequent funding of around Bt125,000.

Ten-year-old Thanadol Nissakul said his home raised 10 hens fed with enhanced feed, which produced up to five iodine-enriched eggs each day. The fourth grader said he loved egg-based meals on the menu and earned extra money selling leftover eggs at Bt5 apiece.

Electrician Prawes Butkaew said he raised around 100 eggs each month, sufficient for three young children and made extra money selling the leftovers.

LIVINGSTON By this time next week, the historic Livingston Court Theater will be just a memory in the minds of longtime city residents.

City officials couldnt save the landmark theater from demolition, but they took steps Friday to begin saving a few of its iconic features the marquee, the sign and the ticket booth.

It was important to save these elements of the Court Theater because theyre historic relics that can be used in the future when a new facility is built, said City Manager Jose Ramirez. The pieces will be stored in the citys public works yard, he added.

Ramirez said demolition of the Livingston Court Theater, built in 1945, will begin Tuesday. The building has been vacant since it closed in 1977. The city bought it in 2001 for $120,000.

The city once planned to restore the building, but thats an unlikely prospect with repairs estimated at $6 million to $7 million and a $150,000 shortfall in Merceds proposed budget.

Whenever you have an iconic building, and theres a lot of history and culture behind it, you always look at how you can save it, Ramirez said. Sadly, we couldnt save it because of financial constraints and health and safety issues.

The demolition will take about a week, Ramirez said. A large excavator will be used to knock down the theater piece by piece. The empty downtown site will then be filled with soil.

The cost to raze the building is not to exceed $30,000, according to city documents.

The City Council voted to enter into a demolition agreement with Jim Brisco Enterprises Inc., a Merced-based general contractor.

Demolition of historic theater set to begin

DANIA BEACH (CBSMiami) Demolition crews are scheduled to get to work on Tuesday tearing down the Airport Hiltons two-story parking garage, according to a spokesman for the Broward County Aviation Department.

The garage and the hotel itself have to go to make way for a new runway at Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Airport officials considered using explosives to knock down the 400 room eight story hotel at Griffin Road and I-95 in Dania Beach but the Federal Aviation Administration nixed that idea, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

The FAA will not allow us to implode a building that close to the airport runway and in such close proximity to a major interstate, airport spokesman Greg Meyer told the paper. We cant do any explosions at the site there at all.

Even though the parking garage is coming down, the three decades old hotel will remain open until early April. Crews will then take it down bit by bit. It is scheduled to be completely razed by early June.

It was determined that the garage and hotel had to go because they posed a potential hazard to planes which will use the new eight-thousand foot long south runway which is scheduled to open in September.

The new runway is expected to ease air traffic delays.

PHILADELPHIA When David Norse first stepped into the Broad Street Ministry on Philadelphia's Avenue of the Arts and spotted the art installation of a dozen tilting metal windmills and glimpsed the flocks of origami birds suspended from the ceiling, he felt a connection.

"This is the place," he recalled thinking a few years ago when he first visited the church across the street from the Kimmel Center. "I'm home."

On Sunday, Norse, 27, was ordained at Broad Street Ministry as Philadelphia's first openly gay male minister in a Presbyterian church.

Norse's proud parents, Rachel and Richard, flew in from Portland, Ore., along with the Rev. Ken Evers-Hood, Norse's hometown minister and mentor. The joyful service featured an eclectic musical mix, with sing-alongs of "This Little Light of Mine," an anthem from the civil rights movement, and a rousing rendition of Sister Sledge's pop classic "We are Family."

The Rev. Bill Golderer, Broad Street's pastor, said the ordination of Norse, who recently earned a master's degree from the Princeton Theological Seminary, marked "an unleashing of David's gifts to the world."

In an earlier interview, Golderer said Norse's ordination reflected the Center City ministry's commitment to serving a diverse Christian community. The ministry has a large outreach program for the homeless and strong ties with the local arts community.

"While David's sexual orientation is an important part of his identity, he sees himself first and foremost as someone called to pastor God's people," said Golderer, who was tapped in 2005 to establish the alternative church. "He is very much into this being a dimension of who he is, but not the sum total."

"Broad Street has always been a place that welcomes people," said Norse, who worshipped at the church while at Princeton and who has been a pastoral associate since September.

San Diego Chargers vs. Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium. Charger fans lose their minds in the rain as the Chargers defeat the Bengals 27-10.

Fifty years ago Sunday the Chargers rode their magic carpet to San Diegos only major sports championship when they turned the Patriots coats and shredded them in the AFL title game. Then it disappeared into the blue yonder for, oh, about a half-century.

Is it time for more magic? They will tell you: Why not us? These San Diegans seem to know no fear and have shown they can play with anybody, location and weather be damned.

Somehow, someway, the Chargers in early December again found a ticket to the carpet, and theyve have been riding it since, winning five straight and getting incredible service from dame fortune.

They didnt get lucky Sunday. They were good.

Chargers beat Bengals 27-10

The Chargers were 7-point underdogs when they flew the thing into Cincinnati for Sundays AFC Wild Card playoff game, and despite some early turbulence, managed to keep it on course. Dominating as the cold rain began to fall, they took over the second half and swept the Bengals under the rug, 27-10.

How high can the magic carpet fly? Can it get up to 5,280 feet, to sprinkle dust on mile-high Denver? Can it wrap itself around Peyton Mannings long neck?

Why not? It did before, on Dec. 12 to be exact, when San Diego went to Colorado and handed the Broncos and Peyton their only loss at home. The carpet may be a bit fickle, but it probably hasnt forgotten how to get there. And the Chargers over the years have proven to be a pain in that Manning neck.

Anyway, there still life, another day of play ahead. Theyll be in Denver next Sunday to meet the Broncos in the AFC Divisional Playoff Game, and they probably will be a 10-point underdog. But if the Chargers have proven one thing over this crazy season, its that they can beat good teams away from home.

CHICAGO (CBS) Four people reportedly were taken to hospitals after a Metra Rock Island train hit a concrete retaining wall while pulling into the station downtown.

Metra passenger Jack Lavallee said he felt a big jolt when the Rock Island Line train arrived at the LaSalle Street station around 6:30 a.m., and the train hit the metal and concrete end stop.

According to unconfirmed dispatch reports, four people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. A total of 15 people were treated from the train.

A spokesperson for Metra said the cause of the crash was under investigation Monday morning.

Metra was experiencing a number of problems and delays due to equipment and mechanical problems caused by the cold, including frozen switches.

Also, a Metra train clipped a semi-trailer truck in Niles, at Touhy Avenue, around 6 a.m. That crash caused a 90-minute delay on the Milwaukee District North Line.
