Coming snow could slow power restoration efforts

    - December 26, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

LITCHFIELD, Maine (AP) - Utility crews from Maine to Michigan and into Canada worked Wednesday to restore power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses left in the dark by last weekend's ice storm, and people slowly trickled out of shelters to spend Christmas Day at their finally warm homes.

But not everyone was so lucky, including Ashley Walter, who was forced to spend Christmas at a shelter in a school in Litchfield with her husband, Jacob Walter, and their month-old daughter, Leah.

The family lost power on Saturday, got it back and then lost it again Sunday. Ashley Walter and Leah stay warm at the shelter while Jacob Walter makes frequent trips home to check on their cats and water pipes.

"It's definitely kind of strange, but we're hanging in there," she said Wednesday of the challenge of being forced out of their home at Christmas. "We did our Christmas together last night. I packed little stockings and gave them to my husband, sisters and my daughter."

The frigid temperatures that cloaked a region from the Great Lakes to New England meant that ice remained on power lines and tree limbs. Officials worried that wind gusts of more than 20 mph could bring down more branches and that 2 to 6 inches of snow in places on Thursday would hamper line crews trying to get to remote spots.

"We've had two beautiful, sunny days in Maine, and the ice isn't going anyplace," Maine Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Lynette Miller said. "They're very concerned about more weight coming down on trees that are already compromised by ice."

The ice storm last weekend was one of the worst to hit during a Christmas week, and repair crews were working around the clock to restore service. States that weren't hit were sending crews to help.

Authorities blamed the storm for 17 deaths in the U.S. and 10 in Canada, many attributed to carbon monoxide poisoning from emergency generators powering homes. In Michigan, police said a woman died Christmas Eve when her vehicle ran a stop light that was out of service because of the ice storm and collided with a pickup truck.

Tens of thousands of homes were still without power on Wednesday in Michigan, down from more than 500,000 at the storm's peak; in Maine, down from more than 100,000; and in Toronto, down from 300,000.

In Litchfield, Trudy Lamoreau was supervising the emergency shelter where about 25 people stayed Tuesday night. Lamoreau, who's also the town manager, said they warmed the shelter with generators until the school got power back late Tuesday night.

The loss of the security keys for the lock on a file cabinet can interrupt a workday in unexpected ways. Most manufacturers design file cabinets with safety features to prevent bypassing the lock. As a result, key replacement is often the only way to re-open the drawers and continue uninterrupted business operations. Whether you own a vertical or lateral file cabinet, the process for acquiring replacement keys isn’t difficult. Typically, it only requires contacting the cabinet manufacturer for assistance.

Write down the brand name, model name and style (vertical or lateral) of your file cabinet. Include the serial and model numbers and the number of cabinet drawers.

Call the cabinet's manufacturer and provide your information to the customer service representative. Telephone numbers can be found in the literature included with the file cabinet.

Order the replacement keys (if available) and wait for the keys to arrive via expedited or ground shipment. If the cabinet manufacturer doesn’t stock replacement keys and instead refers you to a separate lock manufacturer, contact the lock manufacturer for assistance.

If replacement keys aren't available (for example, the manufacturer no longer ships your part, the part is out of stock or you have a custom file cabinet and lock), contact a lock key replacement vendor or locksmith for assistance. Provide your information to determine if the vendor or locksmith has the correct type of replacement key or can make you a key. If the vendor or locksmith can't provide replacement keys or doesn't have a key template to make a replacement, ask the vendor or locksmith whether onsite services to make a key to fit the lock or pick the lock to access files or other stored items are available.

If you're dealing with lost keys in an office or school where the maintenance and upkeep of the cabinets is handled by a business office or support unit, contact that office or unit for replacement keys.

Never pry open your file cabinet or pick the lock, as doing so can void any manufacturer's warranties or permanently damage the cabinet or lock.

GBM described as a rare breed among Zambian Poloticians

    - December 26, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

MMD Copperbelt province information and Publicity Secretary Yotam Mtayachalo has described former Defence Minister Geoffrey Mwamba as a rare breed in Zambian political arena.

MMD Copperbelt Information and Publicity Secretary Yotam Mtayachalo says the decision taken by Mr. Mwamba to take such a bold decision to resign after differing with the President on principle is a rare one in Zambian politics.

Mr. Mtayachalo notes that most politicians in the country lack such principles as exhibited by Mr Mwamba, as their interest is to protect their bellies.

He also notes Mr Mwambas immerse contribution to the Patriotic Front, adding that his resignation is the beginning of cracks in the ruling party.

And Mr Mtayachalo says Zambians are falling to understand what the President is trying to achieve by battling with the Bemba traditional leadership.

He says there is need to allow traditional leaders to operate independently without political interference.

And the National Restoration party (NAREP) has commended former Defence Minister Geoffrey Mwamba for what it has described as a principled decision over the deadlock surrounding the Chitimululu Chieftaincy.

NAREP National Chairman Joseph Mushalika notes that while the manner of the resignation is regrettable, the move is based on principle after President Sata gave Mr. Mwamba the option to choose between keeping his job or the Chitimukulu designate.

And the Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) has observed that the resignation of Defence Minister, Geoffrey Mwamba, speaks volumes that the Bemba speaking people are willing to fight for what is right for them regarding the installation of Henry Sosala as Paramount Chief Chitimukulu.

FODEP Executive Director, MacDonald Chipenzi, says there is need for President Michael Sata to allow the Bemba speaking people to choose their traditional leader and not impose sanctions on them.

Jurin Roofing Services Announces Addition of V2T Roofing Technology

    - December 26, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Quakertown, PA (PRWEB) December 26, 2013

Jurin Roofing Services, Inc. has announced that they have added the V2T Technology Roofing System to their line of products they are licensed and approved to install. This new roofing technology allows for a fumeless roof installation with higher wind resistance and less man hours.

The V2T Roofing System utilizes a proprietary technology that has been developed by V2T Technology, based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The system incorporates V2T Vents which are based on the Venturi Effect. The V2T vents capture the dynamic flow of air across the roof surface to generate lower pressures below the roof membrane. This dynamic flow creates a pressure difference below the roof membrane when compared to the pressure above the roof membrane. This pressure difference is what keeps the roof membrane secured to the roof deck.

Jurin Roofing Services, Inc. applies this technology in conjunction with single-ply roof systems provided and warranted by Carlisle SynTec. The system can utilize EPDM, TPO or PVC roof membranes as part of the overall assembly. Warranties are issued through Carlisle SynTec and can be covered for 15 or 20 year terms.

The V2T Roofing System provides the building owner with many benefits. Among these benefits is the reduction in the use of adhesives for the roof assembly. Adhesives contain solvents and other compounds which create fumes. These fumes can be drawn into the interior of the building through the air ventilation system and can negatively impact employees and occupants of the buildings.

Among the benefits of the V2T Roofing System is a decreased timeline for project installation. The labor demand for most roofing systems is very high, requiring significantly staffed crews to complete the installation of most systems. The V2T Roofing System, in conjunction with the single-ply systems provided by Carlisle SynTec, reduces the labor requirements for installation allowing crews to complete the installation faster.

An additional benefit of the V2T Roofing System is the ability of the roof system to resist damages from high winds. The faster the wind blows, the greater the differential in pressure. This means that the faster the wind blows the more resistance the roof system has to potential wind damage.

The V2T Roof System in conjunction with a quality roof membrane provided by Carlisle SynTec and installed by Jurin Roofing Services, Inc. will provide your building with a high quality, wind resistant roof system that will provide years of protection for your building and business.

Jurin Roofing Services, Inc. is a professional commercial and industrial roofing contractor based in Quakertown, Pennsylvania and Dundee, Florida. Their territory includes Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

Obituary: Del Beutler, 93, founded heating and air conditioning company

    - December 26, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Del Beutler, an enterprising sheet metal worker who founded one of the countrys biggest heating and air conditioning contractors, died Dec. 21 at 93, his family said.

Mr. Beutler returned home to Carmichael after serving two years in the Navy as a sheet metal specialist during World War II. He worked in a local sheet metal shop before studying heating systems and starting his own business in the garage at his home on Stanley Avenue in 1947.

The county tried to close him down because he wasnt in a commercial area, and the neighbors objected, said his son Gary. They said, Hey, he just got out of the Navy and hes just trying to make a living. Leave him alone.

Sensing an opportunity for growth, Mr. Beutler built his business installing heating and duct systems in new residential neighborhoods and commercial developments that sprung up during the postwar housing boom. He established business and personal ties with developers who went on to be leaders in the construction industry, including Joe Benvenuti and Buzz Oates.

In the 1950s, he traveled east to learn about air conditioning and returned to install some of the first modern cooling units in Northern California homes. He experimented with ways to improve the efficiency of air conditioning in harsh Sacramento summers, including new fans and insulation.

Not many people bought air conditioning back then because it was very expensive, his son said. He helped find ways to put it in new homes.

With an emphasis on innovation, Beutler Heating and Air Conditioning became a national leader in the heating and air conditioning industry. Mr. Beutler sold the business to his son and retired in 1981.

He really left people alone to do their jobs and be innovative, said Gary Beutler, chairman of Beutler Corp. He respected his employees and let them be who they were.

The son of a railroad worker, Del Simmons Beutler was born June 10, 1920, in Montpelier, Idaho, and moved with his family to the Sacramento area. He graduated from San Juan High School, became a sheet metal apprentice and worked at McClellan Air Force Base before World War II.

He married Norma Dorothy Doady Dickson in 1940 and had two children. He was active in Masonic organizations in his early years and donated his services as a sheet metal worker to build a prominent copper dome atop Carmichael Presbyterian Church on Marconi Avenue.
