'Tis the season for nonprofit arts organizations to make year-end pitches to potential donors who might be induced to spread some comfort and joy while perhaps locking in a nice income tax deduction.
The most naked plea of all is probably the one above from L.A.s Antaeus Company, the North Hollywood classical stage troupe that last year launched a tradition of posting humorous year-end fundraising videos on its websites homepage and on YouTube.
This year's title is Naked Actors Need Costumes a message driven home by more than a dozen members of the Antaeus acting ensemble who make a full-frontal appeal to viewers to send money so the nonprofit company can meet its manifold needs, not least of which is cladding performers more appropriately.

Strategic framing and blurring of critical pixels keep things decent, but co-artistic director Rob Nagle says the time-honored strategy of undressing actors to draw a crowd is having the usual effect: As of Tuesday the clip, debuting just after Thanksgiving, had been seen more than 7,000 times, or more than double last years funny but fully clothed video fundraising missive.
Maybe next year well have to remove the pixels to grab even more viewers, Nagle joked.
Like any savvy theater company, Antaeus draws on its members particular talents. In this case the key contributors are Gabriel Diani and Etta Devine, a comedy team, who bring filmmaking as well as live-performance skills to the table, having produced a growing oeuvre of indie and online videos.
They scripted, directed and oversaw production of both the 2012 and 2013 fundraising videos, and in the new one they're among the actors present in the altogether. As in last years video, John Sloan, one of Antaeus trio of co-artistic directors with Nagle and Bill Brochtrup, offers himself as the butt of a closing joke this time, literally.
Nagle said Antaeus lacks data-assessment tools to quantify how video viewings are translating into donated dollars, but clearly the exposure, so to speak, cant hurt.

Antaeus Co. sheds clothes and puts on humor for fundraising video
Although All-Out Sewer and Drain owner Ray Caldwell was convicted Monday in federal court of 33 felonies related to illegally dumping septic waste, the Longview business can remain operating for now.
Longview and Cowlitz County officials wouldnt say Wednesday whether they intend to revoke All-Outs licenses. Longview Public Works Director Jeff Cameron declined to comment regarding All-Outs city general business license, which expires in May.
Chris Bischoff, environmental health manager for the Cowlitz County Health Department, said the county was investigating the possibility of revoking Caldwells septic pumping license and would make a decision by January.
Were proceeding with due caution to make sure everything is done correctly as were evaluating the verdict of the federal trial, Bischoff said. Were ensuring hes getting due process.
In mid-November, the county revoked the license of Caldwells business partner, Randy Dingus, who pleaded guilty to one felony count of violating the federal Clean Water Act. Dingus held a license as an operations and maintenance provider of septic systems, Bischoff said. He will be sentenced Jan. 27 for participating in the illegal dumping scheme.
Caldwell, 60, started the drain cleaning and septic pumping business in 1990. Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Benjamin Settle found Caldwell guilty of all 33 counts he faced: 25 felony counts of violating the federal Clean Water Act, six counts of mail fraud and two counts of making false statements. He will be sentenced March 10.
Caldwell was accused of pumping septic waste from his collection trucks into the city sewer system on 25 different dates last year to avoid disposal fees of 10 to 25 cents per gallon. He also is accused of underreporting by hundreds of thousands of gallons the amount of septage he collected from customers.
The mail fraud charges stem from Cowlitz County mailing invoices to All-Out for per-gallon collection fees based on fraudulent information the company provided.
The judge also found the company All-0ut Sewer guilty of 32 of the same charges.
Violations of the Clean Water Act are punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of $5,000 to $50,000 per violation, according to the U.S. Attorneys Office.

Despite conviction, All-Out Sewer licenses still valid for time being
OLD SAYBROOK - Two storms have taken the Dock & Dine restaurant at Saybrook Point down, but not out.
Many area patrons of the iconic shorefront restaurant, in operation since 1940, worried its destruction by two storms in two years would finally take it down for good.
Since the restaurant suffered substantial damage in Superstorm Sandy, federal flood insurance rules required that, if it were to be rebuilt, it would have to meet current construction standards for structures in flood zones.
But owner Jon Kodama was not done. Forming a new firm, The Point, LLC, he and his partners decided to rebuild the Dock & Dine, this time to modern flood code standards.
The proposal started moving through the land use approval process in October 2013. After just six meetings with five commissions, The Point, LLC's, applications to construct a new, 13,500-square-foot restaurant 14 feet above the Connecticut River were approved. The last clearance, from the town's Zoning Commission, was secured Dec. 2.
With these approvals now in hand, the restaurant construction process can begin.
According to Joe Wren, project site engineer and owner's agent, the first step, demolition of the existing structure, should be completed by Jan. 15, 2014. Once the debris is cleared, drilling crews will move in. From mid-January through February 2014, 140 piles that will support the future restaurant facility will be driven.
Wren said that The Point, LLC, expects to finish construction of the new Dock & Dine, a restaurant facility that will be able to accommodate up to 425 patrons, by July 2014.
Several details of the new restaurant plans offer improvements for the general public and for patrons.
"The new building is set six feet further back from the river [than the original]," explained Wren.

Taken Down Twice, But Not Out

Construction of the Arctic Passage exhibit at the Henry Vilas Zoo is set to start in the spring of 2014, according to a release.
The new exhibit is the result of a historic partnership between the county and The Friends of the Henry Vilas Zoo, officials said. Dane County plans to award JP Cullen a $9.4 million contract to build the exhibit and indoor restaurant, pending approval by the Dane County Board.
Arctic Passages improved design brings polar bears back to Madison with a larger habitat and an underwater viewing area that brings people closer to one of the bears, according to the release. The exhibit will also include a new habitat for grizzly bears, complete with a creek that can be stocked with fish, which allows visitors the opportunity to watch a bear capture and eat a fish like bears do in the wild.
After years of planning, the county is set to break ground on the largest expansion in our free zoos 102-year history, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi said. This world-class exhibit will not only enhance one of the regions premiere destinations for families, it will provide important education on the impact climate change has had on the threatened polar bear population and our planet.
Also included in the habitat will be the first indoor dining option at the zoo. The restaurant will seat dozens, and includes a viewing window looking into the polar bear exhibit.
We couldnt be more excited to be a part of Arctic Passage, Tim Pertzborn of JP Cullen said. Its an honor to be able to contribute to a project that will have great economic and community impact regionally, in Dane County and in our neighboring Rock County as well.
Thanks to a community fundraising campaign, the Arctic Passage will also include a new exhibit for the zoos harbor seals, according to the release.
On the heels of this exciting step forward for the Arctic Passage, were excited to announce an anonymous $25,000 matching challenge grant to support the project, Friends of the Henry Vilas Zoo Executive Director Alison Prange said. We are asking community members to dig deep and help us match this grant by Jan. 18 to launch the final push to bring the bears back to Madison.
The project is estimated to cost a little over $10.5 million, according to the release. Dane County will fund $4.38 million of the exhibits design and construction costs. Friends of the Henry Vilas Zoo has raised $3.6 million and still needs to raise the remaining $1 million to complete the exhibit. The county will also fund the $1.6 million cost to design and build the indoor dining area.
