A $7.5 million project to expand the emergency room at LSU Bogalusa Medical Center has begun.

CEO Kurt Scott said work on the expansion, which began in November, will take approximately 18 months.

Its an exciting project for the hospital, he said. Its going to allow us to double the size of our emergency room and actually put a new front on the hospital.

The number of beds in the emergency room will increase from eight to 16 and waiting, treatment and clinical areas will be expanded. Scott said this will allow the hospital to provide emergency care for patients in a department that is more comfortable and efficient.

A longtime local cinema complex is literally turning to dust, and Albuquerques long-awaited Dave & Busters is a step closer to reality.

Crews last week began the demolition of the old Winrock 6 movie theater, a project that is helping clear the way for the citys first location of the Dallas-based restaurant/arcade chain.

Darin Sand of Goodman Realty, the company behind Winrocks redevelopment, said restaurant construction could begin in April at the old theater site. Dave & Busters is aiming for a late summer or early fall opening, he said.

The venue will be about 25,000 square feet.

Dave & Busters was among the first restaurant tenants announced by the Winrock redevelopment team in mid-2012 but will be the last from that wave which also included BJs and Genghis Grill to actually open.

Dave & Busters is known for its mixture of food, drinks and games. There are more than 60 locations today, mostly concentrated in the eastern half of the U.S.

The old Winrock 6 already has been replaced. Regal Cinemas last month unveiled its new 16-screen IMAX theater on another corner of the Winrock property.

Other changes are in store for Winrock, including the departure of longtime tenant Bed, Bath & Beyond. The home goods store is slated to close in February, Sand said, as it moves into a new location near San Mateo and Interstate 40.

Mark D. Croces plans to turn part of Franklin Street into a restaurant row are advancing with his two latest projects for a new sushi-themed restaurant and a pizza-and-wings place.

Croce is seeking approval for his plan to renovate and add a single-story, 1,918-square-foot addition to the former home of his Buckin Buffalo Saloon at 294 Franklin.

The veteran restaurateur wants to replace that now-closed business with a new full-service, eat-in pizzeria, including a 150-seat dining room and a full bar. The proposal is on the menu for approval by the Buffalo Planning Board today, along with three other restaurant projects.

It follows his application and approval by city planners a month ago to convert a 3,200-square-foot walk-up office building at 284 Franklin into a sushi restaurant by adding a cooler, a rear stairwell, a mezzanine and a patio. That building is just in front of his Buffalo Chop House restaurant.

Together, they will add to the dining options across the street from the soon-to-open Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, as well as his holdings on the Franklin strip such as the Chop House, DArcy McGees Irish Pub and Laughlins.

I pretty much own almost every building on that street, Croce said. Years ago, I envisioned that section of Franklin being Buffalos restaurant row, and now its coming to fruition.

Croce said he wants to create a destination and a cluster, almost a food court for all the new hotel guests who would be coming to that part of town as a result of several new hotels opening up. Everybody wants the local food, the steakhouse, to eat Buffalo fare, he said. When people are in from out of town, they want great chicken wings.

So far, he said, he has spoken with the owners of Bocce Club Pizza, Bella Pizza and La Nova Pizza, as well as others, and hopes to make a decision on who will operate the restaurant within 30 days so he can fast-track the plan for an opening in early spring.

City planners last month unanimously approved Croces other restaurant, which he said will feature a nice variety of food to complement the sushi. Hes adding a second level to that building, with an indoor and outdoor patio with heated floors that can be used all year. A cantilevered deck will cover the parking lot.

The projects will likely entail more than $2 million in investment, Croce said. Meanwhile, he is also turning his attention to his Curtiss Building at Franklin and West Huron Street, where he plans to start construction in the spring on a boutique hotel and a Mediterranean- or Italian-style restaurant. The project calls for 68 upscale hotel rooms, with very high-end amenities. The hotel will feature a revolving bar, a three-meal restaurant, a lounge, a rooftop patio and dining area, he said.

DENVER - A Denver area remodeling business is bankrupt, leaving customers with unfinished kitchens.

One family sent 9NEWS a newstip after paying thousands of dollars for a job that still isn't complete.

We found a pattern of complaints against this company, which operates as Kitchens 4 Less and Kitchens 2 Go.

According to the Better Business Bureau, Kitchens 4 Less has 14 complaints in the last three years.

"Specifically, consumers allege the business fails to complete remodeling services in a timely manner, often continuing to work several weeks beyond the promised completion date. Consumers also allege the business provides poor quality work that fails to meet their satisfaction and doesn't always make satisfactory repairs in a timely manner, if at all," the BBB website reads.

Some complaints are classified as "serious" by the BBB because of the high dollar value at stake.

Making matters worse, the owner of Kitchens 4 Less just filed for bankruptcy, leaving customers wondering if they'll ever get the kitchens they paid for.

When Christine Marko of Westminster refinanced her house to pay for a new kitchen, she hired Kitchens 4 Less.

"The pricing, the timeline, everything seemed too good to be true," Marko said.

When she and her husband signed a contract in late July, Kitchens 4 Less had an A+ rating with the Better Business bureau.

Self-improvement is generally measured in small victories, like losing that last couple of pounds, quitting smoking or enrolling in a college course.

Army Spc. Adam Christensen, the new soldier of the year in the Armys Best Warrior Competition at Fort Lee, Va., has never been one for small victories.

Three years ago, Christensen spent his days under a kitchen sink, turning wrenches and unclogging drains. But he longed to be a part of something bigger; he wanted to serve his country and, most importantly, provide a better life for his family. So the plumber from Smithfield, Utah, joined the Army.

It wasnt smooth sailing at first. He failed his first physical fitness assessment with his recruiter, which would have helped him advance prior to boot camp. But the defeat only made him work harder. By the end of boot camp, he was getting the highest marks possible.

That drive, discipline and laser-sharp focus has only picked up steam. In late November, the 29-year-old military policeman beat out the Armys best from every major command in a series of events that tested both physical and mental prowess.

When he called to tell his wife he had won the prestigious competition as the Armys top enlisted warrior, she was speechless and began to cry, Christensen said this week after returning to his Arctic Titans at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

His commanding officers at the 472nd Military Police Company were not quite as surprised.

I was confident he was going to do well, 1st Lt. Stephen Stosberg said of Christensen.

Stosberg said that being a bit older and coming from the blue-collar workforce instilled in Christensen a work ethic, drive to improve and maturity not seen in every soldier. He was made team leader in his platoon as a private.

He knows what he needs to do to be successful, Stosberg said. He constantly seeks self-improvement.
