A tile is a manufactured piece of hard-wearing material such as ceramic, stone, metal, or even glass. Tiles are generally used for covering roofs, floors, walls, showers, or other objects such as tabletops. Alternatively, tile can sometimes refer to similar units made from lightweight materials such as perlite, wood, and mineral wool, typically used for wall and ceiling applications. In another sense, a tile is a construction tile or similar object, such as rectangular counters used in playing games (see tile-based game). The word is derived from the French word tuile, which is, in turn, from the Latin word tegula, meaning a roof tile composed of fired clay. Tiles are often used to form wall and floor coverings, and can range from simple square tiles to complex mosaics. Tiles are most often made from porcelain, fired clay or ceramic with a hard glaze, but other materials are also commonly used, such as glass, metal, cork, and stone. Tiling stone is typically marble, onyx, granite or slate. Thinner tiles can be used on walls than on floors, which require thicker, more durable surfaces.
Ceramics for tiles include earthenware, stoneware, or porcelain stoneware. Stoneware is harder and more durable than earthenware, and so more suitable for floors. Earthenware is often used for roof tiles.[citation needed]
Roof tiles are designed mainly to keep out rain, and are traditionally made from locally available materials such as clay or slate. Modern materials such as concrete and plastic are also used and some clay tiles have a waterproof glaze. A large number of shapes (or "profiles") of roof tiles have evolved. These include:
Roof tiles are 'hung' from the framework of a roof by fixing them with nails. The tiles are usually hung in parallel rows, with each row overlapping the row below it to exclude rainwater and to cover the nails that hold the row below. There are also roof tiles for special positions, particularly where the planes of the several pitches meet. They include ridge, hip and valley tiles. These can either be bedded and pointed in cement mortar or mechanically fixed.
Similarly to roof tiling, tiling has been used to provide a protective weather envelope to the sides of timber frame buildings. These are hung on laths nailed to wall timbers, with tiles specially moulded to cover corners and jambs. Often these tiles are shaped at the exposed end to give a decorative effect. Another form of this is the so-called mathematical tile, which was hung on laths, nailed and then grouted. This form of tiling gives an imitation of brickwork and was developed to give the appearance of brick, but avoided the brick taxes of the 18th century.[1]
Fired roof tiles are found as early as the 3rdmillennium BC in the Early Helladic House of the tiles in Lerna, Greece.[2][3] Debris found at the site contained thousands of terracotta tiles having fallen from the roof.[4] In the Mycenaean period, roofs tiles are documented for Gla and Midea.[5]
The earliest finds of roof tiles in archaic Greece are documented from a very restricted area around Corinth, where fired tiles began to replace thatched roofs at two temples of Apollo and Poseidon between 700 and 650 BC.[6] Spreading rapidly, roof tiles were within fifty years in evidence for a large number of sites around the Eastern Mediterranean, including Mainland Greece, Western Asia Minor, and Southern and Central Italy.[7] Early roof tiles showed an S-shape, with the pan and cover tile forming one piece. They were rather bulky affairs, weighing around 30kg apiece.[8] Being more expensive and labour-intensive to produce than thatch, their introduction has been explained by their greatly enhanced fire resistance, which gave desired protection to the costly temples.[9]
The spread of the roof tile technique has to be viewed in connection with the simultaneous rise of monumental architecture in ancient Greece. Only the newly appearing stone walls, which were replacing the earlier mudbrick and wood walls, were strong enough to support the weight of a tiled roof.[10] As a side-effect, it has been assumed that the new stone and tile construction also ushered in the end of 'Chinese roof' (Knickdach) construction in Greek architecture, as they made the need for an extended roof as rain protection for the mudbrick walls obsolete.[11]
Production of dutch roof tiles started in the 14th century when city rulers required the use of fireproof materials. At the time, most houses were made of wood and had thatch roofing, which would often cause fires to quickly spread. To satisfy demand, many small roof tile makers began to produce roof tiles by hand. Many of these small factories were built near rivers where there was a ready source of clay and cheap transport.
These are commonly made of ceramic or stone, although recent technological advances have resulted in rubber or glass tiles for floors as well. Ceramic tiles may be painted and glazed. Small mosaic tiles may be laid in various patterns. Floor tiles are typically set into mortar consisting of sand, cement and often a latex additive for extra adhesion. The spaces between the tiles are nowadays filled with sanded or unsanded floor grout, but traditionally mortar was used.

Before tile installation begins, the installer is responsible for checking the tile for obvious visual defects. Cartons and pallets of tile must be blended to achieve an aesthetic blend. No claims will be accepted after installations which have obvious visual defective tile. Substrate surfaces shall not show variations in excess of:
Comply with applicable parts of ANSI A-108 Series for ceramic tile installation. Extend tile work into recesses, and under and behind equipment and fixtures except where otherwise shown. Fit tile to electrical outlets, piping, fixtures and other penetrations so that plates, collars or covers overlap tile. Joints shall align vertically and horizontally between trim and field tile. Grout tile to comply with reference installation standards using grout materials indicated.
Leave finished installation free of cracked, chipped, broken, unbonded or otherwise defective tile work. Protect all floor tile installations with kraft paper or other heavy covering during construction period to prevent staining or damage. No foot or wheel traffic permitted on floor for at least 7 days after grouting. Due to inherent size variation in porcelain and ceramic floor tiles, a grout joint must be used. Your installer will be able to recommend a suitable grout joint for the product youve selected.

FARGO Fire officials say an unattended candle started a blaze Tuesday night in a downtown apartment building, setting off the sprinkler system and causing significant water damage to much of the structure.
Shortly after 9 p.m., fire alarms went off at the Fargo High Rise, a 22-story complex at 101 2nd St. S. The Fargo Fire Department arrived to find water running down the east side of the building starting at the 15th floor, fire officials said.
Firefighters learned that the sprinklers had extinguished a fire on the 15th floor in apartment 1511. Inside the unit, they found the woman who lived there. She was not injured, fire officials said.
The woman told fire investigators that she had lit a candle in a bedroom and then went into another room. She later discovered a pillow and bedspread were on fire, and she tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the flames.
The blaze, which caused minor fire and smoke damage, was contained to the woman's apartment, but it activated the sprinkler system, which caused significant water damage to the apartment and the first 15 floors, fire officials said.
The fire led many residents to evacuate the building. Early Wednesday, authorities were still determining how many tenants would be displaced by the water damage.
The Fargo High Rise with 249 one-bedroom units was built in 1971 and is considered one of Fargos tallest residential buildings. An estimated cost of the damage was not available early Wednesday.

FARGO Some residents of the Fargo High Rise were forced to evacuate Tuesday night after a fire in a 15th floor unit set off the buildings sprinkler system, causing significant water damage throughout the complex.
Crews were called about 9:30 p.m. to the apartment fire at 101 2nd St. S.
Assistant Fire Chief Gary Lorenz said the fire was contained to the apartment, but it activated the buildings sprinkler system.
Weve got water running down 15 floors, Lorenz said Tuesday night.
As of 10:30 p.m., the fire which appeared to have started in a bed was extinguished, but four fire crews were still on scene to determine the extent of the water damage and which apartments would need to be temporarily evacuated.
We dont know how many people will be displaced for the night, Lorenz said.
He said along with fire and police, the Fargo Housing and Redevelopment Authority, Salvation Army and Red Cross will help coordinate displaced residents.
The 22-story Fargo High Rise with 249 one-bedroom units was built in 1971 and is considered one of Fargos tallest residential buildings.

Dotted with the picturesque view of mulberry fields and a series of silk yarn production sheds, Eluvolu, the tiny island in the midst of the Krishna, in Ghantasala mandal is otherwise one of the largest silk production pockets of the district.
The proud Scheduled Caste farmers of the island are unsung heroes in both inspiring the other farmers to switch to this activity and expanding the extent of land under the mulberry cultivation.
Totally, 30 silk yarn production sheds are being run in the island, in which mulberry leaves are being grown in over 100 acres. Another ten more sheds are under construction, a grower, Penumuttchu Suresh, has told The Hindu.
Mr. Suresh on his one-acre, inherited from his parents, reaps a profit of at least Rs.10,000 on every harvest, excluding input cost. Maximum silk yield is 90 kg per acre that fetches between Rs.250 and Rs.300 a kg (for Bivolitine variety of silk worm) while CB yellow, another variety, fetches Rs.250 a kg.
However, Bivoltine is winter-friendly variety. Silk can be harvested at least six times a year. Its moreover a balance between growth of mulberry leaves and silk worms, say farmers.
The farmer is key person in all aspects of work involved in growing mulberry leaves, management of silk worms and selling the produce to the Department of Sericulture centre based at Nuzvidu junction.
Farmers in the island predict that many farmers would switch from other traditional commercial crops to the mulberry cultivation.

TACOMA A federal judge on Monday found Longview businessman Ray Caldwell guilty of multiple violations of federal clean water laws and other charges, ending a four-month trial that documented how his business repeatedly dumped raw septic waste into the Longview sewer system.
U.S. District Court Judge Benjamin Settle found Caldwell, owner of All-Out Sewer and Drain, guilty of all 33 counts he faced: 25 felony counts of violating the federal Clean Water Act, six counts of mail fraud and two counts of making false statements.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Oesterle said the government vigorously pursued the case because Caldwell had a long history of illegal dumping septage that continued even after U.S. Environmental Protection Agency agents raided his business in August 2012.
It became apparent to us that he wasnt going to stop until we prosecuted him, Oesterle said Monday.
The judge said the court rejected as not credible the defense theory the water was nothing more than graywater, which is the equivalent of dishwater. Although septage may separate into layers as it settles in collection trucks, the water in the middle nonetheless contains bacteria, contaminants and pollutants, he said, adding that Caldwell was aware of this.
The case depended partly on circumstantial evidence, which was overwhelming, and led the court to the only conclusions it could reach, Settle said.
Caldwell, wearing an olive-colored suit and cream shirt and tie, did not visibly react when the judge read the verdict.
Sentencing will take place at 11 a.m. March 10. Caldwell will be free on bond until then.
For each Clean Water Act violation, Caldwell, 60, could face up to three years in prison, fines of $5,000 to $50,000 per day of violation and supervised release of up to one year.
The judge also found the company All-0ut Sewer guilty of 32 of the same charges.

The Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority is using a state grant to connect homes in an Okatie neighborhood to a new sewer line, but one resident worries that's a waste of money.
Some homes in the neighborhood on Old Bailey Road, just off S.C. 170 near Callawassie Island, had new septic tanks installed in late 2011, also with the help of a state grant, resident Lula Hamilton said.
Less than a year later, representatives from BJWSA and the Lowcountry Council of Governments, which partnered with the utility to secure a sewer grant, were visiting the neighborhood to gauge interest in installing a new sewer line, Hamilton said.
"Look, if you guys thought that you were going to bring this sewer system in, why waste my money putting down new septic tank systems?" she said.
Both projects are meant to improve the Okatie community and the river basin environment, according to Michelle Knight, Lowcountry Council of Governments' community and economic development director.
"There are going to be times where we do a (community development) block grant, where we're going to hit somebody who's already received assistance in some way, shape or form," Knight said. "Does that mean we shouldn't do it? I would think not. With (the sewer), we're doing something that's much more permanent."
The Council of Governments is a regional organization involved in planning, economic and workforce development in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper counties. During the past three years, the council has used a state grant to repair septic systems across the Okatie River basin to reduce water pollution, said Ginnie Kozak, the council's planning director.
The new sewer line will be a permanent fix, BJWSA spokesman Matt Brady said. Instead of relying on individuals to maintain their septic systems, the neighborhood will have the support and reliability of BJWSA regular maintenance, he added.
"The grant is a long-term solution for wastewater services in the area," Brady said. "It benefits these residents by providing a sustainable public wastewater system, and it also benefits our sensitive environment."
The new sewer project will cost nearly $390,000, funded by a community development grant awarded in July, Brady said. The state awards such grants for revitalizing neighborhoods and improving community infrastructure, and the program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
