HARKER HEIGHTS A crew of 11 judges made its way around the Harker Heights city limits Dec. 9-11, checking their lists twice to determine the winners of the citys 14th annual Heights Lights on Parade Outdoor Lighting/Decorating Contest.
Voters cast 331 ballots online, and 12 entries won prizes for their Christmas decorating skills.
The scores came close in many of the divisions, and the judges enjoyed themselves, said Nichole Broemer, recreation and events coordinator. I would like to thank the entries for participating and encourage citizens to join in the contest next year.
Broemer blamed the weather for the lower-than-usual participation.
The weather has been crazy since Thanksgiving and people werent able to get their lights up with it being so cold, she said.
Residents entered the free contest based on four divisions, which were broken down into the type of home and location. Awards were given for first place, second place, and Peoples Choice in Division I, Division II and Division IV. In Division III, awards were given per area.
This years contest had 16 entries. New this year was the Peoples Choice award. Residents visited the Parks and Recreation Departments website for a list of the entries addresses and drove around to pick their favorites. They returned to the website to vote.
Joseph and Chris Dillows display garnered them a first place and Peoples Choice award in the manufactured home category. Their display is choreographed to music and has several moving parts.
We always put the lights out for the kids every year, and if we dont put them up by a certain time people keep asking us when they will be up, Joseph Dillow said. Winning is a nice recognition for our efforts. We do it for the kids because they really enjoy it.
This year it took them three weeks and more than 30 hours to complete their masterpiece because of the chilly temperatures,

SPICEWOOD BEACH, Texas (KXAN) - For two years, the only water residents of Spicewood Beach could use had to be trucked in. But that could end in a few weeks. A new water treatment plant there could soon revitalize the lakefront community.
Kenneth Saire spent Monday working on his Christmas decorations. But as the holiday nears, he'd prefer to spruce up other parts of his home.
"You know, wash your car, water your lawn, you can't do none of that,"he said. "You can't water your flowers."
Saire has been living in Spicewood Beach for 20 years, the last two under the tight Stage 4 water restrictions where water can be used for showers, cooking and little else.
"All you can smell is chlorine," he added. "You let it sit for five minutes and it finally clears up, but nobody drinks it hardly in the neighborhood."
Corix, the company that operates the water utilities in Spicewood Beach, has spent the last two years trucking water into the community. But the company says that could be coming to an end after they installed two large treatment units.
The company says the units will prepare about 330 gallons of Lake Travis water a minute. But Sairs isn't buying that story quite yet.
"I'll believe it when I can turn up my tap and wash my car, stuff like that," he said, "then I'll believe it."
Corix says water prices in the community should stay steady for about a year after the units start running.

She doesn't sell tickets. In fact, hardly anyone even knows it's there. But a Maryland woman is putting on quite a holiday show and it's all inside her house. You might say Renetta Zanco's love of Christmas has snowballed. She has a lot of Christmas trees. 277 trees to be exact.

The parents of Clifton murder victim Joanna Yeates have revealed that their beloved daughters bedroom remains untouched, three years after she went missing.
While David and Teresa Yeates cleared out the landscape architects flat in Canynge Road, Clifton, last year, they cannot bring themselves to clear out the room in which their daughter grew up at the family home in Ampfield, Hampshire,
Joanna, 25, disappeared on December 17, 2010, after a works night out on Park Street.
Her snow-covered body was found on Longwood Lane, Failand, on Christmas Day
She had been strangled to death by next-door Vincent Tabak, who was jailed for life and a minimum of 20 years at Bristol Crown Court in 2011.
Speaking to The Sun newspaper, Mr Yeates said: We are as well as we are going to be. What has happened has happened and we try to make the most of what we have left, which is what Jo would have wanted.
The two of us dont visit Jos grave regularly, but go now and again. She is still so much a part of us, going to her grave to remember her is not necessary.
We get through life but everything has adjusted. When the phone rings now I dont expect to hear her at the other end.
But as families across the country prepare for a Christmas get-together, the day will pass as any other for Mr and Mrs Yeates because they remember Joanna every day.
Of course it is special, said Mr Yeates. As is today, the anniversary of the day she disappeared. But we think of her all the time. We remember her all the time. Christmas Day is no different.

A great interior designer specializes in bringing life into a home. As an award winning artist, austin interior designer, Michelle Thomas, has carved out a career doing just that. From her headquarters in Austin, TX, Michelle and her team at Michelle Thomas Design have crossed the country on a mission of passion, even being featured on HGTV's Property Brothers along the way.
Most recently, Michelle was honored by the American Society of Interior Designers for her latest residential construction. Receiving 1st place in the "2013 ASID Design Excellence Rising Star - Residential Remodel" category for the design came as a distinct adoration. Flexing her aptitude, Michelle provided fantastic value, giving the client a sizable effect considering the modest budget. For the past four years, Michelle has served on the board of ASID Austin Design Community, and gave her farewell compliments as she stepped down at the commencement ceremony.
The award winning project transformed a conventional family home into a cutting-edge rarity, complete with modern amenities. Monotonous walls were quickly renewed with warm and inviting color, centered around a stone veneer in the dining room accented by baritone walnut beams and a hand-forged chandelier. The kitchen also received a facelift with a redesigned backsplash plus new lighting and cabinet hardware.

When it comes to home security, peace of mind seems to be a factor in the type of security you get. And with several home security companies competing for your business I guess what it really breaks down to is the ease of use, added options, and the service. When I received the security system from Protect America, it arrived in a rather large box that made me a little worried. I assumed that for such a large box there must be tons of wiring, and parts, and manuals, and more. I cringed at the thought of having to assemble the security system unit, and run cable and wires through the wall, and fumble with small screws trying to mount the unit to the wall. What did I get myself into?, I wondered.
After opening the box, I quickly realized that installation wasnt going to be bad at all. The box only contained the security system control panel, also known as the Simon XT by GE, 11 sensors, 2 key fobs, a LCD touchscreen remote control panel, a home security yard sign, and the user manual. Surprisingly, the only connections I had to do was to connect the backup battery to the unit and connect my Ethernet cable.
Protect America offers three ways of alarm monitoring connections: a standard landline, high-speed broadband, or wireless cellular. I choose to use the high-speed broadband. Setup for the Simon XT is pretty standard: you just power it up and set the time and date. Then the next step is to install the sensors on the doors and windows you want monitored.
Protect America has packages that vary the number of sensors that you can choose from: 3, 5, 7, 12, or 15 doors or windows ranging in price from $29.99 to $42.99. Since there is not a service technician that would install the system, you basically have to do the installation yourself. The Protect America website has installation videos to help you do the installation.
Installing the sensors was fairly easy and effortless. Each consists of two pieces, the sensor and the magnet. Once installed, the alarm goes off when the magnet is separated from the sensor. The sensor and magnet have Velcro backing so you can shift either one during the install if you need to. Other alarm companies sensors and magnets have to be aligned perfectly and screwed in just right. If either one is not where it needs to be then they have to be unscrewed and re-screwed to align both pieces. With the Velcro backing, attaching it is super easy. The backing uses 3M tape, so the hold is strong.
As you go throughout your home to install the sensors, the manual has a Sensor Information Worksheet inside so that you can identify the name and location of the sensor. You will need this information when you call to activate your alarm system. Activating the system depends on how many sensors and additional optional devices, you have. Since I am reviewing just the basic door and window sensors, it took roughly 30 minutes to pair the sensors with Protect America and their monitoring station. Fortunately, I had the pleasure of dealing with Douglas (x7118) over at Protect America. Not only was he patient with me as we activated the sensors and went through the worksheet, but he was very helpful after the install with emails and phone calls. He helped things go smoothly, even with some unforeseen hiccups that my broadband cable was experiencing. As we tested the system, Douglas informed me of the available optional accessories, as well as future accessories, that they have to offer: glass break sensors, motion detectors, interactive video cameras, garage door sensors, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, flood sensors, and even GPS tracking for your car.
The Simon XT control pad can support up to 40 wireless zones, so you can have a ton of additional accessories right at your disposal. With all these optional devices, there was one that kind of stood out among the rest a solar-powered light for the security yard sign that turns on at dusk and off at dawn. I thought it was advantageous to have the security yard sign visible at night. I read somewhere that even having a alarm company sticker or yard sign is a deterrent for thieves looking for a house to break into. I even read that some people have placed dummy security bullet cameras around their house as a deterrent. Every little bit helps I suppose.
