MORIAH The bells that once summoned students to Mineville and Moriah schools are ringing again, thanks to Moriah Middle School student Brooke Mildon.
Brooke, 12, discovered the historic bells had been in storage since their removal from the old school buildings decades ago.
A Cadette Girl Scout, she decided that restoration and display of the cast-iron bells would make a great Silver Award project, the highest honor available to Cadettes.
The bells were recently rededicated during a ceremony outside the school.
PROMOTED TEAMWORK
The Mineville, Port Henry and Moriah school districts merged in 1968, the last time the Mineville and Moriah bells were used until now.
I pursued the project because I had a passion for the historic bells, the seventh-grader said. I learned a lot about being a team leader and what teamwork really means.
She had to hold fundraisers to finance restoration of the bells and construction of two gazebos outside Moriah Central School in which to display them.
People assisted by baking for bake sales, donating bottles and cans, purchasing food from bake sales or the spaghetti dinner, she said.
She thanked the Mineville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post for letting her use their facility for the spaghetti dinner.

Manila, Philippines A popular Feng Shui expert predicted yesterday that 2014 will be a hot year and that the country should brace for a tropical cyclone as strong as typhoon Yolanda.
Napakanainit na panahon ang expected natin sa 2014. Rain will be less causing havoc to the agriculture industry, said popular Feng Shui Master Hanz Cua in his annual forecast during an exclusive interview in Mandaluyong City. Master Cua said there is a possibility that another tropical cyclone near the strength of Yolanda will hit the country.
2014 will be Year of the Fire Horse. Based on my readings, the Wood and Fire elements will be dominant next year. And because it will be hot year, madaling mag-evaporate ang tubig. This might result to strong weather disturbances. May nakikita ako na halos kasing lakas ni super typhoon Yolanda. Expect na rin natin ang heavy rains and more floods, said Master Cua, Feng Shui master to some of the countrys celebrities and personalities.
With Fire as one of the prevailing elements, expect heated arguments, anger, and even war in the forefront. Master Cua added that there will be a disease of pandemic proportion that might be experienced in the country between April and September.
The Peach Blossom star will also make an appearance in 2014 as sex scandals and love triangles continue to heat up. Magiging mainit ang mga tao pag-dating sa pag-ibig. Mapusok at hindi sila maawat when it comes to love, Master Cua said. More weddings are also expected with 2014 as it is another good year to get married.
But the good news is that the Philippines will maintain a good economic growth in 2014, he said. The economy will rise in April which is a good month to invest in stocks, Master Cua said.
Someone from the Far East will also become popular, while tensions in the Middle East and Korea will escalate, Master Cua predicted.
Lucky businesses for 2014 include telecommunications that belong to the Metal element and restaurants under the Fire Element. The agriculture sector will not be good in 2014 because of the dry season.
Sectors deemed lucky in 2014 are southwest, south, west, and center while northeast, east, and southeast are considered unlucky.

QUICK action by the Rural Fire Service averted any property loss following a grass fire at Mount Rankin yesterday.
FIRE: The scene at Mount Rankin yesterday where a grass fire broke out at around 3.30pm. While the Rural Fire Service initially had fears for properties in the vicinity, firefighters were able to quickly bring the blaze under control.
QUICK action by the Rural Fire Service averted any property loss following a grass fire at Mount Rankin yesterday.
Authorities yesterday had no idea how the grass fire began.
The fire, which broke out at around 3.30pm, was on the Freemantle Road, five kilometres out of Eglinton.
RSF Superintendent Tom Shirt said they were initially very worried about a number of properties in the area, but that danger had passed by 4.45pm yesterday.
Supt Shirt said 12 RFS trucks responded to the fire. Supt Shirt said conditions worked in the favour of firefighters at the scene.
Conditions were very hot, but the wind was only light, which really helped us, because they were able to get around it pretty quickly, he said.
While no properties were lost, Supt Shirt said a number of fences were destroyed in the blaze.
