STOCKTON - When is a church more than a church? When it is Progressive Community Church, the large, lively, multicultural ministry that takes up 12.2 acres along South B Street.

Progressive Community is a statement.

And, in the vision of Pastor Glenn R. Shields, it is a beacon - of spiritual hope, of personal promise, of the untapped potential in south Stockton.

Pastor Glenn R. Shields moved to Stockton 15 years ago. His take on his adopted city:

"Stockton is a well-kept secret. The city has wonderful people. It has all the potential in the world to be a tremendous city. But there is a tendency to work in isolation. A spirit of collaboration is missing in the Stockton church community. We've got to do better. We have a social responsibility, and we've got to be involved in the affairs of the city."

The 40,000-square-foot multipurpose facility seats 1,200 people in its expansive main sanctuary, has a 2,500-square-foot fellowship hall and seven classrooms at 600 square feet each. The $8 million edifice also is equipped with the latest audio and video technology.

There are 14 full-time employees.

Church aims to be a guiding light for south Stockton

The Christmas tree lot that has been a tradition at the Cutler Ridge United Methodist Church in Cutler Bay for 23 years has returned, although construction on Old Cutler Road and a loss of church property to the county has resulted in less space for it.

Tom McClary, a member of the church familiar with its history, explained why the tree lot is important to them.

The tree lot pays us a set amount for setting up on our property, McClary said. The church uses that money to supplement our operating expenses and to support projects of the United Methodist Church in Florida and around the world. Due to the sagging economy and the loss of revenue to the tree lot from the road construction, we have had to reduce the amount that they pay us for the use of our property. I was pleased when they decided that they could still operate on the smaller piece of property by using a smaller tent.

Located at the corner of Marlin Drive and Old Cutler Road, the church used to have more useable property in the past, and the current county road improvement project has further complicated things.

The process began when we built our sanctuary in 1978, McClary said. Our original property line is defined as 35 feet from the center line of Old Cutler. In 1978, in order to get our permit, we had to cede an additional five feet to the county. The survey done in 1990 when we built our Fellowship Center shows the property line as 50 feet from the center line of Old Cutler, and there is a notation about that additional right of way to be granted. That, of course, is how the county gets more right of way without having to pay for it through imminent domain. They extort it as price for getting a building permit.

McClary said that the recent road construction project has added a curbing, 20 feet of grass area and a six-foot sidewalk that brings them right to the edge of the 50-foot right of way. That reduced the space available for the Christmas tree lot. Prior to the sidewalk, we could still make use of the edge of the right of way, provided a certain setback from Old Cutler was maintained as specified in the permit, McClary said.

Gloria Lowery, who has been bringing trees from her farm in North Carolina from the start and has many longtime followers who come every year for their trees, said she was glad to still be able to have them there at the church, even though now she must use a smaller tent. Santas Tree Farm began in 1990, Lowery said. We were open to see the effects of Andrew, and the gangs who were prevalent for a couple of years. Then we saw the area become Cutler Bay and watched as everything in the community became stable, the gangs were gone and everything is beginning to look beautiful.

INTERIOR DESIGNER Suzanne Tucker's newly released book, "Interiors: The Romance of Design" (288 pages, Monicelli Press, $65), is a lush coffee-table book that features a dozen homes she's designed. They range from a cozy country bungalow to a crisp apartment in San Francisco's Millennium Tower to a spectacular lodge home in Sun Valley.

Within the gorgeously styled and photographed pages are illustrative chapters on Tucker's own stylish home and her two showcase spaces a dining room for the 2010 San Francisco Decorator Showcase and the living room for Villa Belvedere, the 2012 Marin Designers Showcase, which also graces the tome's cover.

Tucker, who lives in Sausalito with her husband, Tim Marks, is managing projects across the country; a formal city residence, a rustic ranch, a modern apartment, a classic California Spanish revival, the Auberge du Soleil maisons and a historic house on the Hudson River.

Despite this schedule, she managed to answer some questions on her design approach:

Q: What does your Santa Barbara upbringing bring to your design?

A: Growing up in Montecito, the world was certainly my architectural and horticultural oyster! My sister and I would spend days on end building forts out of whatever organic materials we would find to create our fantasies. And as a child, I loved my parents' dinner parties, the set-up, the silver and china, and tagging along with them so I could see their friends' houses and explore the gardens. It all strongly developed my love of design, the decorative arts, architecture and garden design. It also influenced my approach to my projects in that I love creating homes that are essentially charming and individual and, yes, romantic.

Q: What are your three design essentials?

A: Balance, proportion and scale. Amen!

In addition to a new Point Dume Fire Station, Malibu residents will also be able to enjoy a large mosaic tile art mural on the outside of the new station at 28722 Pacific Coast Highway (PCH).

Matt Doolin of Topanga Art Tile was selected to design the mural.

It incorporates the vibrant colors found in nature, Harkey wrote. The carpet is a tribute to the great tile carpet done by Malibu Potteries at the nearby Adamson House.

The cost of the mural and its installation will be paid by LA Countys Civic Arts program, which requires one percent of the countys design/construction costs on capital projects be allocated to creating new public works of art. The mural is expected to be completed by spring or summer 2014.

Erin Harkey, the countys civic arts project manager, explained that the idea of using tile for the artwork came from Malibus history of tile production. During the selection process, Harkey worked closely with ex-officio Cultural Arts Commission member Graeme Clifford, as well as the fire department, County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavskys office and other members of the Malibu art community, to sift through submissions and proposals from 50 or 60 local tile artist before ultimately selecting Doolin's proposal.

Matt is a local boy. His inspiration evolved from the natural landscape of the mountains and the sea, Harkey explained. He has art in the Topanga LibraryHe will offer a contemporary perspective on this traditional art form.

The mural Doolin proposed depicts the sky, mountains and sea of Malibus landscape rising from a rolling carpet andwill be on the front of the new fire station, visible to people driving past it on PCH. The work of art will be 55 feet long and 9 feet tall it its highest point, wrapping around to the right side of the building.

Members of the Malibu Cultural Arts Commission were impressed with the proposed mural and gave it their blessing. Its beautiful, and thoughtfully and carefully done, said committee member Scott Hosfeld.

It captures the feeling of the community, Chair Daniel Stern added.

The station has been undergoing construction since last summer and a temporary fire station has been set up at Zuma Beach for the interim.

Except youre not really going to fly anywhere. And while youre sitting inside the fuselage, youre actually... at a bus stop.

Ball State University architecture students are dreaming up second lives to recycle old airplanes. What if, they asked themselves, instead of sending retired aircrafts to graveyards to rust, they could be used to build bus stops and apartment complexes and emergency relief huts?

What really interested me is reusing something thats literally going to sit in a wasteyard, said second-year architecture masters student Daniel Potash, 23, who designed the bus stop. Why not reuse it?

Think of the strength and the size of an airplane the enormous amounts of pressure and extreme temperatures it must withstand, and the hefty amounts of weight it must carry.

The potential of its parts is a playground for an architects imagination. Its an intriguing concept, even if the experimental sketches may never be realized.

Like many brilliant ideas, this one originated at a bar.

About four years ago, Professor Harry Eggink had been toying with the concept of reusing airplanes and explored it a little with one of his advanced architecture classes. He brought some designs with him when he went to a bar with his youngest son and friends a bunch of aeronautical engineers.

Ball State architects dream up new uses for old planes

Saudi Arabia participated in the two-day Arab Union of Architects (AUA) meeting in Tunisia, which discussed the teaching of architecture in various colleges and universities in the region over the weekend. We suggested the need to host another meeting in six months time to discuss the criteria in certifying colleges or universities. This is a significant contribution from the Saudi side, said Ghazi Saeed Al-Abasi, secretary-general of the Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE). He revealed that the next meeting would be held either in Algeria or Morocco. Al-Abasi said that certifying schools based on standards set by the Arab architects union is necessary to ensure that quality architects graduate from the regions universities and colleges. He added that the meeting also discussed ways to improve the teaching of architecture as well as the problems encountered by architecture students. The 50 experts from ten countries also shared their own experiences as architecture students and practitioners in their respective countries in two sessions of the meeting. There were a total of 16 presentations made by the representatives from eleven countries, which included Saudi Arabia, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Libya, Tunis, Algeria and Morocco. The AUA has 18 members, seven of which abstained from participating in the meeting. He added that at present there are over 25,000 architects in the Kingdom, of whom about 3,000 are Saudi. There are also some 25 government and private colleges. A bright future awaits Saudi architects. Their services are very much in demand, to use an understatement, as the country is undergoing massive development, he said.

Emerging markets are offering interesting investment opportunities in terms of shopping center development, according to the latest Asia Pacific Retail Trends and Retail Hotspots reports released by CBRE. The Asia Pacific market in particular continued to see a steady flow of new retailer openings in 2013, amid steady economic growth and generally positive consumer sentiment.

Southeast Asia, in particular, continued to mature rapidly with the completion of new retail space and increasingly sophisticated consumers, which spurred the arrival of new retailers from overseas.The top five countries of retailer origin, however, remained unchanged over last year. New retailers from the Americas remained the most active, with 71 new entries across Asia Pacific in 2013. Retailers from Italy (47), the United Kingdom (40), France (37) and Japan (24) completed the top five.

While Hanoi recorded the highest number of new entrants (30) of any city in Asia Pacific in 2013, Hong Kong (28) came a close second, followed by Beijing (27), Shanghai (26) and Singapore (25). In India, demand from international retailers in New Delhi (16) remained more-or-less stable over last year, as more groups sought space in prime shopping centers as opposed to high street shops.Despite the prevailing high rentals in the prime shopping locations of many established Asian cities, leasing demand for space in these prime spots remained strong throughout the year.

Not prohibitive rentals, but the limited availability of quality retail space in core locations would seem to have continued to pose a greater barrier to new retailer entry in a number of key emerging Asian marketsincluding New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.Demand from international retailers in Mumbai and New Delhi remained stable during the year, with interest from fast fashion groups in particular remaining firm throughout 2013.Recent quarters also saw a number of well-established international mass market brands enter tier-II locations, partly because of the lack of quality space options in tier-I markets.

Wal-Mart India appoints Krish Iyer as CEO

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc announced that Krish Iyer has been named president and CEO of Walmart India, effective Jan. 20, 2014. Iyer, who will report to Walmart Asia regional president and CEO Scott Price, will replace interim CEO Ramnik Narsey, who is taking a new role as senior vice president, Walmart International. Ramnik will report to David Cheesewright, the incoming President and Chief Executive Officer for Walmart International.

Scott Price, president and CEO of Walmart Asia said: Krish will be responsible for leading the growth and success of our India operations while also continuing to develop our future retail strategy there. His knowledge of our business, combined with his understanding of the Indian market and culture, make him a natural fit for this role. I would like to personally appreciate Ramnik and acknowledge his leadership of our India business as we worked to develop our current business plan.

Originally from Mumbai, India, Iyer joined Walmart International as a senior vice president in 2012. Prior to coming to Walmart, he spent six years with A.S. Watson Group, a leading international health, beauty and lifestyle retailer, serving as managing director in Thailand, Taiwan and the Philippines, regional business development director and regional director over store design and development for Asia and Eastern Europe. Before that, Iyer was managing director and CEO at Piramyd Retail Limited. Iyer is a Chartered Accountant, having received his Bachelors degree with honors in Commerce and Economics from the University of Mumbai in India.
