Fences is divided into two acts. Act One is comprised of four scenes and Act Two has five. The play begins on a Friday, Troy and Bono's payday. Troy and Bono go to Troy's house for their weekly ritual of drinking and talking. Troy has asked Mr. Rand, their boss, why the black employees aren't allowed to drive the garbage trucks, only to lift the garbage. Bono thinks Troy is cheating on his wife, Rose. Troy and Rose's son, Cory, has been recruited by a college football team. Troy was in the Negro Leagues but never got a chance to play in the Major Leagues because he got too old to play just as the Major Leagues began accepting black players. Troy goes into a long epic story about his struggle in July of 1943 with death. Lyons shows up at the house because he knows it is Troy's payday. Rose reminds Troy about the fence she's asked him to finish building.
Cory and Troy work on the fence. Cory breaks the news to Troy that he has given away his job at the local grocery store, the A&P, during the football season. Cory begs Troy to let him play because a coach from North Carolina is coming all the way to Pittsburgh to see Cory play. Troy refuses and demands Cory to get his job back.
Act One, scene four takes place on Friday and mirrors scene one. Troy has won his case and has been assigned as the first colored garbage truck driver in the city. Bono and Troy remember their fathers and their childhood experiences of leaving home in the south and moving north. Cory comes home enraged after finding out that Troy told the football coach that Cory may not play on the team. Troy warns Cory that his insubordinance is "strike one," against him.
Troy bails his brother Gabriel out of jail. Bono and Troy work on the fence. Bono explains to Troy and Cory that Rose wants the fence because she loves her family and wants to keep close to her love. Troy admits to Bono that he is having an affair with Alberta. Bono bets Troy that if he finishes building the fence for Rose, Bono will buy his wife, Lucille the refrigerator he has promised her for a long time. Troy tells Rose about a hearing in three weeks to determine whether or not Gabriel should be recommitted to an asylum. Troy tells Rose about his affair. Rose accuses Troy of taking and not giving. Troy grabs Rose's arm. Cory grabs Troy from behind. They fight and Troy wins. Troy calls "strike two" on Cory.
Six months later, Troy says he is going over to the hospital to see Alberta who went into labor early. Rose tells Troy that Gabriel has been taken away to the asylum because Troy couldn't read the papers and signed him away. Alberta had a baby girl but died during childbirth. Troy challenges Death to come and get him after he builds a fence. Troy brings home his baby, Raynell. Rose takes in Raynell as her own child, but refuses to be dutiful as Troy's wife.
On Troy's payday, Bono shows up unexpectedly. Troy and Bono acknowledge how each man made good on his bet about the fence and the refrigerator. Troy insists that Cory leave the house and provide for himself. Cory brings up Troy's recent failings with Rose. Cory points out that the house and property, from which Troy is throwing Cory out, should actually be owned by Gabriel whose government checks paid for most of the mortgage payments. Troy physically attacks Cory. Troy kicks Cory out of the house for good. Cory leaves. Troy swings the baseball bat in the air, taunting Death.
Eight years later, Raynell plays in her newly planted garden. Troy has died from a heart attack. Cory returns home from the Marines to attend Troy's funeral. Lyons and Bono join Rose too. Cory refuses to attend. Rose teaches Cory that not attending Troy's funeral does not make Cory a man. Raynell and Cory sing one of Troy's father's blues songs. Gabriel turns up, released or escaped from the mental hospital. Gabe blows his trumpet but no sound comes out. He tries again but the trumpet will not play. Disappointed and hurt, Gabriel dances. He makes a cry and the Heavens open wide. He says, "That's the way that goes," and the play ends.

Maxine off the mark over fences in style

Twenty-one-year-old Maxine OSullivan rode her first winner over fences with a highly competent display aboard Pals Leg, trained by her father, Eugene, in the Follow Us On Facebook Beginners Chase at Tramore yesterday.

Said Ms OSullivan: That was brilliant, hes lovely. It was his first time over fences and he looked at the first three a bit, but after that was brilliant.
Favourite, Sugar Bullet, made most of the running, but Pals Leg eased past coming away from the second last and kept going well for his pilot to easily hold Classic Event.
It is a great pleasure to win with Maxine riding, remarked a proud father. Hes been an unlucky horse all his life. Ive been running him on the wrong ground and he kept getting beaten by good horses.
He won a point at Dungourney on bottomless ground for Derek OConnor and Derek told me to never run him on that again, he wanted better ground. I took his advice, but its soft ground he wants.
Davy Russell, lucky to survive serious injury when taking a crashing fall off Sir Des Champs at Punchestown on Sunday, showed no ill effects when guiding well-backed Sunday Serenade to victory in the Buy Tramore Race Tickets Online Mares Maiden Hurdle.

Third to stablemate Champagne Fever in the champion bumper at the 2012 Punchestown Festival, Mozoltov was subsequently unbeaten in two starts over timber, most recently seeing off Drinmore winner Don Cossack in the Grade Two Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle in February.
The seven-year-old has been off the track since then and now embarks on a career over the bigger obstacles, with Davy Russell taking the ride for owners Gigginstown House Stud.
Mullins said: "Mozoltov is in good form and schools well at home. The ground should be fine for him and if he brings his hurdle form over fences, he probably sets the standard. Hopefully he has a safe round of jumping."

The idea of renovating another kitchen is exciting in the planning stages. However, I never imagined to be taking down wallpaper ever again. Since my involvement in the wallpaper industry back in the late '90s, wallpaper has definitely taken a turn. I hung wallpaper in most of the rooms in my home at that time. As wallpaper is slowly making a comeback, this project has more windows than walls and wallpaper isn't necessary to enhance this space.
Daley Decor
In updating an oceanside bungalow where an open kitchen/living area will be transformed, the first stage in this remodel is the removal of colonial blue and white mini-print wallpaper applied by the original owner. The goal for the kitchen is to create a calm beach, relaxed and natural theme. Painting the existing stained wainscoting white and removing the wallpaper will enhance the view from the living and kitchen area for little money.
When hanging wallpaper, primer sizing the walls is a must. Sizing helps in the installation of wallpaper because it assists sliding and matching the paper's pattern at the seams and makes for easier installation. Sizing is a light acrylic fluid that helps the adhesion and also aides in the paper removal process.
When removing paper-backed vinyl wallpaper, the top vinyl design layer should peel off easily. With some soaking of the paper, the backing should wipe off with little effort. In this case, the original owners hung wallpaper over lightly skim-coated walls -- no primer, no paint finish, no sizing, just wallpaper directly onto the wall's surface.
With no sizing, implementing the proper steps of lightly scoring the top layer of the vinyl paper with a razor blade knife and spraying a solution of one part hot water with one part white vinegar was a nightmare. Without sizing, the wallpaper glue is absorbed by the surface of the drywall or skim-coated wall. Peeling off the paper turns into peeling off the top skim-coat layer and paper surface of the drywall in small pieces. It's not a pleasant outcome.
It takes patience and lots of soaking of the paper to remove the wallpaper without damaging the walls. In this case, sanding the walls and a new skim coat will be needed to achieve a clean look before painting.

A building in an old port maintenance yard is demolished Thursday to make way for a new six-lane bridge at the Port of Long Beach as part of the Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement Project. (Bob Chamberlin / Los Angeles Times / December 12, 2013)
December 12, 2013, 6:19 p.m.
Several aging buildings came tumbling down Thursday on Terminal Island in the first of weeks of demolition work that will make way for a new, massive bridge at the Port of Long Beach.
The buildings, part of an old port maintenance yard build in the 1970s, were reduced to rubble by giant bulldozers. Port staff moved into a new maintenance building next to the port administration center last month.
Crews will continue to work for several weeks to level some 22 buildings that lie directly in the path of the new six-lane, 200-foot-high span that will connect the port and downtown Long Beach.
The old bridge, which has been known to have concrete chunks fall from its underbelly and is too low for many ships to navigate, is in desperate need of replacement.
The work is beginning as port crews continue to excavate a messy underground maze of retired oil wells and utilities in the bridges footprint, a process that has taken more than two years and fueled cost overruns on the $1.3 billion project.
The demolition phase, however, is proceeding on schedule, said port spokesman John Pope.
Theyre taking their giant Tonka toys and moving on down pretty fast, Pope said. Its a nice time to wrap up the year with this kind of work and look forward to whats coming.
The replacement bridge, which hasnt yet been named, is expected to open in 2016.

Barely 48 hours after some residents along the Sango-Ijoko-Akute-Alagbole-Ojodu Road staged a demonstration against the planned further demolition of structures in the area by the state government, some other people of the area on Thursday carried out a counter-protest.
The counter-protesters, including those claiming to be the original inhabitants of the area, scores of market men and women, members of some unions and other interest groups, declared their support for the ongoing expansion of the road by the Ibikunle Amosun-led administration in the state.
The state government had on Wednesday in a statement shelved its earlier plans to further extend the initial limit of the road and demolish houses and shops by additional eight metres following Tuesdays protest.
But the indigenes disowned those involved in the Tuesday protest, saying they were not residents of the area.
Bearing placards with various inscriptions such as, We are authentic indigenes of Sango-Ijoko, we support Amosun, Amosun more
blessing; more grace, and Sango community is for Amosun, the protesters chanted various solidarity songs.
Addressing the protesters, the Babaloja of Sango, Sakiru Olasege, said traders in the area were in support of the planned further demolition.
Olasege added that the expansion of the road was long overdue, saying, We appreciate the governor for giving us this type of development that we have been waiting for since 10 years ago. That is why we are here to counter the previous information given to the government on Tuesday.
The Iyaloja of Sango, Alhaja Saudat Balogun, urged the government to go ahead with the further demolition if necessary.
