Demolition has begun on the West High School as the semester comes to a close.

Construction crews started demolishing the West High School Wednesday morning. The school suffered severe structural damage after the April 17th explosion. It lies just a few hundred hours from the blast site.

Crews were going to start Tuesday, but it was delayed due to weather. Now that it has started, teachers and faculty say it was very emotional seeing it torn down.

"Well it's sad just for the whole High School, lots of memories," West art teacher Diana Whiteley said. "We had a great time."

Whiteley's room and office were one of the first sections to be demolished Wednesday. She fought back tears as she recalled the memories of the building she spent six years working.

"We had a great time, it was a great facility, something that everyone was very proud of," Whiteley said.

Students also fought back tears remembering the times at the old high school. Junior Holly Soukup says she made a lot of good memories, specifically in the cafeteria.

"We're going to cry, we have so many memories made in that building and just thinking about it now I'm stopping my tears, Soukup said. "To see those memories demolished, it's like a part of us is missing."

Senior Jackson Kucera says his last memory of the building is having a water balloon fight the day of the explosion.

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -Breathing new life into downtown Knoxville also means a balancing act - since it's home to so much history.

Sometimes those two ideas can leave people at odds over what's best for a project or a piece of property.

On Wednesday, the Downtown Design Review Board met to consider an amendment that addresses the demolition of buildings.

The proposed language would mandate that owners who demolish buildings should ensure that the remaining site is covered with vegetation and that fencing should be installed around vacant lots, including decorative fencing along sidewalks.

"It really doesn't do much to remove blight influences that vacant lots have in urban areas. That's a big component, but it's also a big stumbling block on how to implement that right now," said Mike Reynolds, Downtown Design Review board member.

Reynolds says issues were discussed at the meeting because he believes the board's role in the demolition process is vague and needs clarification.

A decision by St. John's Cathedral to demolish two buildings in the fall on Walnut Street sparked controversy.

Recently, the owners of the Pryor Brown Garage wanted to demolish that building and create surface parking until they could develop the site, but the Metropolitan Planning Commission denied a necessary rezoning request.

Attorneys for Pryor Brown on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against city council because the body did not vote on the appeal.

Building a custom home today involves much more than specialized floor plans. Homeowners have endless options for special features and unique touches that can turn a home into a personal oasis.

Functionality over Formality

James D. McVaugh, founder and president of McVaugh Custom Homes Inc., said homebuyers tend to prefer functionality over formal living spaces.

This is particularly true with great rooms where dining, kitchen and living rooms all blend in an L-shape configuration with a high ceiling, he explained. We are also seeing kitchen islands getting bigger and designed in new shapes like the letter T which seats more people and allows for easier conversations.

Amanda Pallotta, associate designer and of sister companies Contour Interior Design LLC and Capital Builders & Designers LLC, explained that clients tailor their homes to fit their lifestyle.

Separate playrooms, theaters and home offices are all integral spaces that are consistently requested by clients, she said. It is very important to design for all members of the family so each individual living in the house can be comfortable. In order to achieve this higher standard of livability, the spaces need to be multifunctional.

The Great Outdoors

Functional living spaces often incorporate patios and backyards, McVaugh said. With our favorable weather, we are incorporating outdoor sliding pocket door systems that when open, literally blend the inside with the outside. Outside areas now offer fire pits, water features, summer kitchens and the newest evolution away from giant pools to smaller splash pools.

Dear Ed: I plan on buying my first house in the near future and want to have a rain-style shower head in the bathroom. Depending on what I buy, I'm not sure if I'll have to build my shower stall from scratch, or adapt a rain head to an existing shower. What's the difference between installing new or adapting to old when it comes to rain-style shower heads? Steve, Utah

A: Not surprisingly, rain-style shower heads are designed to rain down on the user. So, basically you need to move the head higher and more to the middle of the shower stall to create a raining effect.

For new stalls, you can install a short shower arm pipe that sticks out vertically through the ceiling; then you can attach your rain shower head to that threaded pipe. But make sure you have enough ceiling height for this type of installation. If ceiling height is a concern, you can upgrade to a flush-mount rain head. While pricey, flush-mount ceiling heads have no exposed pipes and are easy to clean.

For existing shower stalls, to keep the costs down you can simply install a longer shower arm extension pipe onto the existing water connection. Then, mount your shower head to that pipe. However, height and shower arm stability can be an issue. In that case, you may also want to upgrade and install a rain shower water column system. This unit still attaches to the existing water connection, but the pipe column is secured to the wall with special anchors. The arched shower arm can extend up and over to the middle of the stall with more height and security. Bottom line: New or old, when installing a rain-style shower head, upgrading can avoid a flood of problems!
