Efforts to loosen one of the St. Louis regions most notorious traffic choke points wrapped up on Friday.
During the last two summers, the Missouri Department of Transportation overcame one significant physical obstacle to add another lane in each direction on Interstate 270, roughly between Manchester Road and Interstate 44.
MoDOT had to work around railroad bridge columns that carry tracks over the bustling interstate, and blasted away some of the rock bluffs that posed a natural barrier to widening. Replacing the bridge would have been cost-prohibitive, MoDOT officials say.
So the project called for adding a fifth lane in each direction to the four-lane highway. MoDOT did this by making the north- and southbound lanes slightly narrower than the traditional 12-foot lane width.
Reader Marcel Roy of Crestwood noticed that there were some complications to merging onto southbound I-270 at Dougherty Ferry while the work was under way.
With the entrance ramp restricted to one merge lane, traffic could sometimes back up on eastbound Dougherty Ferry, and sometimes on southbound Des Peres Road.
The new northbound lane between Manchester Road and I-44 opened in December 2012. With little fanfare, MoDOT officials on Friday opened the fifth southbound lane between Dougherty Ferry Road and I-44.
The need was pretty clear. The roughly four-mile stretch carries 175,000 to 185,000 cars each day, making it one of the busiest roads in the region.
Traffic is known to slow to a crawl and by crawl, we mean about 35 mph on a typical morning commute on the northbound segment of I-270. That means it takes about 10 minutes more to drive this section during rush hour than periods of light traffic.
The state learned during the nearly two-year closure of Highway 40 (Interstate 64) that it could restripe highways without sacrificing safety. During the Highway 40 closure, MoDOT painted narrower lanes on sections of Interstate 70 and I-44.

Two-year Interstate 270 widening project wraps up
Keeler Tavern Museum recently received a $10,500 grant from the 1772 Foundation, partially funding the replacement of the cedar shingle roof on the Cass Gilbert wing of its main building.
While replacing the roof in September, the museum also installed foam insulation to help minimize heating and cooling costs.
The focus of the 1772 Foundation, located in Pomfret, is the preservation and enhancement of American historical entities and projects. In Connecticut, the highly competitive application process is managed through the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation.
The museum continues to welcome donations toward its ongoing restoration efforts. As people are considering year-end charitable contributions, we hope that area residents will think to write a check to Keeler Tavern Museum, said Executive Director Hildi Grob. Support of this kind demonstrates to funders like 1772 Foundation that their generosity is matched by the people living in the communities in which the foundation has invested.

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -
If a fire starts in your home, every second is critical in saving your family and house. That's why the Quincy Fire Department is recommending people install sprinkler systems.
QFD hosted a fire prevention event at the Quincy mallSaturday morning where they showed a real-life sprinkler demonstration.
Officials say with a sprinkler system, a fire can be contained in 24 seconds.
On the other hand, firefighters say it only takes two minutes for a home without sprinklers to be fully engulfed.
"The one that does not have a sprinkler system in it, we wanted to show everyone how quickly a fire can spread and how devastating it can be in such a short period of time," said Jerry Smith of the Quincy Fire Department.
Smith says there's a push in Illinois to require sprinkler systems in all new construction projects, but it hasn't passed yet.
Smith says a system could cost at least $10,000.

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., Oct. 19, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via PRWEB - Early in the spring of 2013 Sheds Unlimited INC of Lancaster County, PA broke out of their normal routine of manufacturing prefab home sheds to building a concession stand and six sports field dugouts for the Mount Laurel Little League club in New Jersey. During the conversation with the office staff, he mentioned the need for sports field dugout shelters and was greeted with solutions. "Shed Unlimited worked with us to design and build a modestly priced dugout which looks great," Doulong reported in an interview.
The new portable concession stand from Sheds Unlimited serves the baseball league for much more than just a food booth. The two story modular building also provides ample space on the large second floor for storage of sports field items of every kind. The concession stand/storage garage features a full sized stairway to the second floor to allow for storage of extra food products and access to the baseball field equipment storage area.
Visit the Mount Laurel football fields and you easily spot the brightly colored sports field dugouts filled with youngsters dressed in full sports gear. These prefab dugouts were delivered fully assembled and set in place over the benches which were pre-installed. All six of the dugout shelters contain features such as large openings in the walls to allow parents of the little league players to keep an eye on their youngsters and add a touch of attractiveness to the fields.
Opening day for the Mount Laurel Baseball League was attended by former Phillies shortstop and manager Larry Bowa, U.S. Representative of New Jersey's 3rd Congressional district Jon Runyon and emceed by the Comcast SportsNet anchor and Mount Laurel Baseball League board member Neil Hartman. The portable concession stand and sports dugouts served the teams well on the opening day.
When asked how he would rate the experience the Baseball League had while working with Sheds Unlimited of Lancaster, PA, Mr. Doulong said "I would give Sheds Unlimited an outstanding rating...the process went very smoothly."

Spending on home remodels is expected to return to pre-recession levels nationwide by mid-2014, according to an index put out by Harvard University, but indications are it wont happen in Albuquerque.
The pace of remodel spending across the country is forecast to increase by double-digit percentages from the third quarter of this year through the second quarter of 2014, when it will peak at $148.9 billion, according to the Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity by Harvards Joint Center for Housing Studies.
The $148.9 billion in spending in mid-2014 will eclipse the most recent high of $146.2 billion set in mid-2007. The nationwide pace of remodeling is forecast to slow down in the latter half of 2014.
The soft patch that homebuilding has seen in recent months, coupled with rising financing costs, is expected to be reflected as slower growth in home-improvement spending beginning around the middle of next year, said Eric S. Belsky, managing director of the center, in a prepared statement.
FOLKMAN: City has a unique housing market
At the national level, remodeling activity has tended to track with the pace of homebuilding, said Jim Folkman of the HBA, the homebuilders association in the metro. Both tend to reflect housing demand.
That is much less true in the Albuquerque market, however, he said. There really doesnt appear to be a one-to-one relationship between those two different construction activities in our metropolitan area.
For example, homebuilding hit a 30-year low in the metro in 2011 when building permits were issued for 1,192 new homes, he said. In stark contrast, 2011 was a robust year for home remodels, he noted.

MANKATO Two are going, two are gone as the transformation of South Front Street begins.
"This is really going to change the look of this area," said Gregg Anderson of the project that will eventually bring a seven-story office tower, a four-story retail/residential building and a parking ramp and lot. The buildings will begin going up next summer in a $16 million development by Tailwind Group.
Anderson, who runs a photo studio in his Front Street building, said the demolition of buildings to clear the way for the project is removing the last remnants of some old Mankato businesses.
This week, crews demolished two smaller buildings on the corner of Warren and South Front Street one that had housed Survey Services and one that was most recently an antique store. Those spaces, across Front Street from where the construction will take place, will be a surface parking lot.
Demolition of the Survey Services building marks the end of the site of one of Mankato's first pizza parlors Pizza Kato.
Chuck Dahline, raised in Willmar, was attending the University of Minnesota in 1957 when he went to work at a restaurant and tasted his first pizza. "I didn't know what a pizza was."
His boss soon recommended Dahline to a friend who was opening a new pizza parlor in Mankato and Dahline applied for a job. "Not many people in Mankato knew anything about pizzas, so I got the job," Dahline said.
In December of 1958 Pizza Kato opened in a new building just four months after the city's first pizza place, Beasey's Pizza, opened on Main Street.
Ten years later Dahline bought Pizza Kato and ran it for another 20 years until 1988. The original parlor had a large neon marquee sign that was later replaced with a wall sign to meet new city sign ordinances.
Nearly every day, Dahline could be seen through the large window in front of Pizza Kato tossing and rolling pizza dough.
