Greenwich resident Daniel F. Good responds to the Department of Transportation's news that tree removal on the Merritt Parkway will last at least two more summers.

To the Editor:

As stated in the paper, tree removal will take place for this summer and the next two.Presently, there is constant and daily bumper-to-bumper traffic on the parkway withendless vehicles burning thousand and thousands of gallons of gas going nowhere.

Simply stated: Why doesn't the DOT work at night - from 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. with half-hours time for a meal break. Pay the staff overtime, which would be the equivalent of 42 hoursstraight time. Or a shift differential and have them work a modified five night week.

Working at night would minimize traffic being backed up since drivers would know thatwork is going on every night for tree removal. This would help to save the environment from excess burning of fuel.

Send out small crews a week or so ahead of time to spray paint the trees to be removed usingflorescent paint for easy identification. Maximize productivity while people are sleeping and minimizetraffic problems.

Additional consideration could be given to the crews to work five nights a week but shorten Fridaynight hours from midnight to 5:30 a.m., since people tend to drive late Friday evening getting away for theweekend.

There are various scenarios the DOT could come up with. Let's be practical, efficient, attention to road conditions, sensitivity to motorists.

Last but not least, the DOT is ongoingly working on half the service areas on both sides of the parkway.While driving you have to be careful not to run out of gas. It's even hard to find one conveniently open tostop, stretch your legs and visit the facilities and for some refreshment.The few that are open are overwhelmedwith motorists.

Parish councillors were on hand to help firefighters at the scene of a blaze in which two garden sheds were completely destroyed.

Two crews from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and Royston Fire Service were called to Beeton Close in Melbourn at 12.45pm on Monday.

A spokesman for Royston Fire Station said: Two sheds were affected, they were completely burnt through.

There was also damage to some personal property, including a gas barbecue, and the fence for three properties was destroyed.

We were at the scene for around an hour and a half.

Cllr Jose Hales, district councillor for Melbourn, Heydon and The Chishills, parish councillor for Melbourn and a former firefighter in London, said he was in the area when he saw the blaze and went over to assist.

He said: I saw the fire at the back of the community car park so went over to the site where the villages new community hub is being built and asked for some metal to secure the broken fence for the house holders.

A government inspector will next week visit a village allotment where gardeners have been banned from having potting sheds.

The official trip to Plum Pudding Allotments, near Rugeley, is expected to finally settle the row between farmer Paul Boston, owner of the site, and district council officers who say the sheds need planning permission.

The plot holders are adamant that the sheds are essential for storing their tools and other equipment and are backing Mr Boston who is optimistic about the outcome.

He and Lichfield District Council enforcement officer Christine Hibbs are due to meet the government planning inspector at the Armitage with Handsacre site on Tuesday. Mr Boston said:

We will know one way or another very soon now.

Ive been down and cut the hedge and the bank, and all but five of the sheds have been painted green, so everything is looking good.

Ive put up rails and planted fir trees to block the view of the allotments from neighbours. Weve only had one letter of objection from a resident compared to 400 signatures on a petition and 30 letters in support of keeping the site kept as it is, sheds and all.

Im looking forward to the end of this saga and only hope that good sense will prevail.

Growers were told 20 months ago that they needed permission for their sheds because they are in the green belt. The site is also next to the Trent & Mersey Canal conservation area.

Mr Boston was warned that if he failed to obtain approval, an enforcement notice would be issued by the council. He has ignored the document and appealed directly to the planning inspectorate in Bristol. The 66-year-old argues that a neighbouring allotment site, owned by Rugeley power station, has sheds and that he should not be treated any differently.
