As reported in HVP in the article published on June 12, OFTEC Promotes Workmanship Warranty, the Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC) have announced that all registered installation businesses are required to supply a workmanship warranty to their customers. The Department for Communities & Local Government (DCLG) has given OFTEC until June 2014 to implement these changes and guarantee that registered installation businesses which self-certificate their building regulation work in England and Wales, will provide customers with the warranty.
The warranty, available from OFTEC Insurance Services, aims to reassure customers when installation work is undertaken in their homes. The warranty covers all domestic work that is covered by Building Regulation Approved Document J, from the installation of boilers and cookers, to plumbing and electrical installations. It also covers costs incurred from correcting infringements of building regulations related to the installation for up to six years. This ensures that even if the original installer is not available, any faults in the installation can be corrected.
Adrian Lightwood, OFTECs registration manager, told HVP that:
Because the warranty provides important additional reassurance for homeowners it should form part of any professional installation service.
A representative from Coventry Emergency Plumbers welcomed OFTECs announcement of a new warranty which guarantees the protection of customers:
The fact that the aim of the workmanship warranty is to reassure customers and offer them peace of mind that the installation work has been fitted to a high standard, is of particular interest. We aim to reassure customers through the high quality installations and services we offer, but this warranty offers further reassurance to the customer. As the warranty covers the majority of appliances, customers can be safe in the knowledge that, if necessary, the installations are insured if any further work needs to be done.

Ashwini YS, June 13, 2013, Mysore:
In November, 2012, the water supply operator (WSO)/plumber of the Karnataka State Open University, places a request before the varsity for a promotion to the post of Junior Engineer. Pronto, his wish was granted.
Documents available with Deccan Herald show that KSOU, just to accommodate the plumbers request, went as far as amending its own statute.
KSOU amended the Cadre and Recruitment rules of the posts of assistant executive engineer (AEE), assistant engineer (AE) and junior engineer (JE) prescribed in Statute 25, and sent it for Chancellors assent, on November 21, 2012 (former -VC KS Rangappas tenure ending period), without bringing it to the knowledge of the State government.
The Board meeting held on November 21, 2012, resolved to make amendments to the method of recruitment to the post of JE (Civil) to accommodate promotion from the lower cadre of WSO in the varsity, because Sadashiva had requested for a promotion opportunity.
The WSO has requested the varsity to provide him opportunity to get promoted to the post of JE. It is true that WSO does not have promotion avenue in his services. Therefore, it is proposed to make provision in the Statutes in respect to the post of JE, the board resolved.
The amended statute is now called, The KSOU (Cadre and Recruitment of the posts of AEE, AE and Junior Engineer)(Amendment) Statutes, 2012). But, even before the Chancellor gave his approval to the amendment, Sadashiva was promoted as JE on December 5, 2012. His salary was increased from Rs 17,650 to Rs 32,000, plus allowances.
The Chancellor gave assent to the same on January 30, 2013. Sadashiva is SSLC pass and holds a National Trade Certificate (NTC). A JEshould at least hold a diploma. Likewise, SAShashikumar, who too holds SSLCand NTC, was promoted as AE (Electrical), for which the Statute was amended on March 27, 2012, and sent for Chancellors assent, without the knowledge of the State government. Shashikumar was promoted on November 24, 2012.
Wrong deputation
On September 2, 2010, Anil Kumar, Deputy Manager, KSFC, Bangalore was taken on deputation by the KSOU as in-charge of Engineering department and Constructions. As per Statute 25, KSOUcan appoint AEE on deputation only from the Public Works department (PWD). Kumar who has been deputed from KSFCis presently in-charge of the Rs 150-crore odd construction project going on in the varsity.

TAMPA, Fla., June 13, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- For humans, melanin determines one's skin. The compound is a polymer, and also creates color in the eye and hair. Higher levels of melanin determines darker pigment for a person. For insects, however, melanin is a large portion of the entities immune defense system, as their blood darkens in response to pathogens.
(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130613/CG31656)
Scientists who study insects now have a refined model of just how an insect forms its melanin as an important factor for the research on such creatures. The ability to understand and control the creatures derives specifically from the knowledge learned through such studies.
In the Journal of Biological Chemistry, University of Georgia entomologists have found the model scientists have been using up to this point are simply wrong.
"For 50 years or so, people have been studying melanization in insects, and a model has been built as a way of understanding how it functions," said Kevin Clark, an associate research scientist of entomology in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. "They got a lot of things right, but some fundamental aspects have been ignored."
The traditional methods have created assumption that activation of a particular enzyme calls phenol oxidase, and is sufficient ability to create melanization. Results from the study led by Clark and Michael Strand found an important set of steps that were being ignored in archaic models.
Just like dominoes, the action in the insect immunology triggers other reactions. Melanization occurs when an insect is infected by the melanin that surrounds the infecting compound. This process creates free radicals that are byproducts that work to remove the infection wholly. For both the insects as well as for humans, an amino acid known as tyrosine is utilized as a synthesized melanin.
"It is a fundamental part of the immune system," Strand said. "A misinterpretation of how this enzyme cascade is activated is a crucial deficiency in the literature. If this paper has any impact, it would be that it is changing the view of what is functionally required for this to operate."

IF I learned one thing about teaching insect pest control for the garden, it is that people have allowed themselves to be conditioned to the "silver bullet" method of control.
The silver bullet method relies heavily on applying some sort of product to kill insect pests in the garden. This foolhardy method of control requires perpetual use of product, ongoing obedience to purchasing and a failure to understand the garden's ecology while ignoring the long-term view.
Here's a secret that most consumers do not know about using chemical pest products in the garden: There are no curative chemicals, there are only preventative chemicals, meaning no chemical can completely eliminate insects, chemicals can only control insects. Therefore once you start spraying, you become a slave to spending money on a product that has no hope of permanently eliminating pests from the garden. To put it into a context we'll use a simple scenario. If you spend $10 twice a year on insect control to buy a product that you spray for 10 years, you will have spent $200 and the pest will continue to appear year after year. Even if you do control the pest by upgrading to evermore toxic products, the environmental damage is unseen and lasts through the lifespan of your children.
Here's another secret that "they" do not want you to know: Insects genetically mutate to develop resistance to chemicals. The more society sprays chemicals, the faster insects breed resistance. In the same way that human disease causing agents become resistant to antibiotics, garden insect pests also develop resistance to chemicals. Worldwide, more than 500 species of insects, ants, mites, and spiders have developed some level of pesticide resistance (Source: Michigan State University, grapes.msu.edu). And insect resistance to pesticides has only occurred since society started widespread use of pesticides in the 1950s.
With all of that information in mind, here are some simple solutions to help control insects in the garden.
Feed me: Healthy plants are known to be more likely to withstand pest attack. But feeding with chemical fertilizer leads to soft growth that is desirable to insects. Feed your plants by incorporating animal manure or compost at time of planting. And always mulch your plants because mulch is a source of slow-release nutrient. The persistent myth that ornamental plants need regular fertilization is a product of seductive marketing and not true, so don't waste your money.
Time to die: I know that many soft-hearted gardeners cannot stand this option of pest control, but it is the most effective long-term solution for plants that are chronically affected by insect attack. So dig up that pest ridden plant, compost it and replace with a different species of plant and your pest problem will be solved, permanently.
Is that the right plant for that spot? Of all the things in the garden that we have control over, plant selection is the most important. Choosing the right plant for the right place can prevent a lifetime of pest problems. If you like a particular plant, then find the right place in the garden for it to grow according to its preferred growing conditions, not the place you want it to grow.
You mean I shouldn't kill those aphids: Yes, that is correct. To obtain stable, long-term pest control there must be some insect food for predatory insects to eat. If you continually spray to kill all insects then you are removing the food source for wasps, lacewings, ladybugs and other predatory insects that provide free insect control. For many people this paradigm shift in thinking is the hardest philosophy to accept and comprehend. But it works, it's free, healthy for the environment and provides an opportunity to teach children a gentler, kinder and more effective way to grow a healthy garden.
I don't know what it was but I sprayed it just in case: This type of archaic thinking has led us to believe that all insects should be killed. Spraying without accurate identification is blind ignorance, damaging to the environment and expensive financially. Before you try to control any insect pest you must accurately identify the problem. Today there are so many Internet resources to help identify insect pests that anyone with a computer or smartphone can easily identify any garden pest. But a word of caution, only use .edu or .gov websites to assure accuracy.
