Davao holds promise for young interior designers

    - June 13, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Creativity in design has long flourished in the Philippine south, so it is quite surprising to learn that Mindanao's first exhibit on interior design was held only last month.

Design Trends in 4 x 8, held at the Abreeza Ayala Mall Atrium in Davao City from May 28 to 30, was organized by the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers as part of the World Interiors Day celebration.

The event aimed to build and strengthen linkages between design professionals, furniture designers and manufacturers, construction materials suppliers, decorators and design enthusiasts, students, and the general populace.

It also served to commemorate Republic Act 10350, or the Philippine Interior Design Act of 2012, which mandates compliance with the countrys existing building code standards and at the same time offers a mutually beneficial protection program for interior designers and their clients.

One of the exhibitors at the event was John Matthew B. Librando, an up-and-coming young designer from the region who spoke to GMA News Online about being an interior designer in Mindanao.

Interior designer John Matthew Librando: "I think Davao has become a place where designers would settle and not think of working anywhere else." Photo by Cham Cuartero

Projects and new developments have flourished everywhere in Davao in the past few years and it has brought opportunities and chances for the designers, especially the young ones like us, to become active in practicing the profession. I think Davao has become a place where designers would settle and not think of working anywhere else.

Is there enough of a market in the region for young interior designers?

People have become more aware of our presence in the region in the past few years and it's fantastic that people here identify the work we render and have become more aware of the importance of interior design in improving the functionality, comfort, and aesthetics of the space they occupy or use.

Crime Tracker: Woman Uses Home Security System To Rescue Kidnapped Teen

    - June 13, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

KHQ.COM - A California woman used her home security system to rescue a teenage girl held at knife point inside her vehicle. The man snuck into the girl's car at a shopping center and hid in her backseat; eventually surprising the girl, holding a knife to her body and demanding she drive to a remote location.

The girl escaped and ran for help. Star Santa Cruz was outside when the 16-year-old girl ran up screaming. The woman pulled the girl inside her home, they ran upstairs, and Santa Cruz set off the panic button. Police arrived on scene and were able to link a fingerprint inside the girl's car to 23-year-old Aron Roy. He's charged with six felonies, including kidnapping.

The incident serves as a good reminder when it comes to safety. Law officers recommend scanning the backseat through the window whenever you get into your vehicle in a public place. They also say victims should do their best to avoid being taken to a second location by their captors. The chance of rescue dramatically decreases when kidnap victims are taken to that second location. This California incident proves home security systems are effective when we know how to sufficiently use and activate them. And finally, this incident ended the best way it possibly could have thanks to the quick thinking of this teenage girl and an alert homeowner.

    Customers furious over unfinished fences

    - June 13, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Colleen Schmidt, CTV Calgary Published Wednesday, June 12, 2013 6:01PM MDT Last Updated Wednesday, June 12, 2013 6:42PM MDT

Several homeowners in Panorama are frustrated that they didnt check out their fencing contractor a little more closely before handing over their hard earned cash.

Planks of wood have been sitting in the backyards of Farhad Werdeg and Atif Abbasi since last September.

"I think they're useless now, sitting out there all winter, but they're still there," said Abbasi.

In both cases, Steve Nielsen, the contractor and owner of Heart of the West Construction, dropped the lumber off and promised to return the next day to build their fences.

He never did and the homeowners have tried several times to contact him.

We tried to contact him maybe 100 times, he never replied, said Werdeg.

It's the same story down at Eva Strazhevskis house.

All three neighbors thought they were safe hiring Nielsen to do their jobs.

"He was doing all the fences on our street and the street in front of us. All our neighbors were using him, neighbors on the back, the left, the right, said Werdeg.

Old fences will be replaced at Dumont’s Memorial Park

    - June 13, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Officials in Dumont are going out to bid for new fencing at Veterans Memorial Park.

Borough Administrator John Perkins said fences at two of the parks baseball diamonds and at its pair of tennis courts will be replaced by the fall.

He said he did not know how many feet of fencing will be required to do the job but that the project will cost roughly $100,000.

Perkins said the existing fences are old and unsafe, noting errant foul balls often are hit beyond backstops at both fields.

The Borough Council passed a resolution at a recent regular meeting authorizing the borough clerk to advertise for bids.

The borough received a matching grant worth $157,000 from the Bergen County Open Space, Recreation, Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust Fund to buy new fencing.

The funding also will go toward purchasing exercise equipment at the park; re-grading Ginas Field at Aladdin Avenue and Second Street; and replacing two scoreboards one at the park, and another at Columbia Field at Columbia and Johnson avenues.

Those three projects are exempt from competitive bidding.

Fences Signs With Elektra Records; Acclaimed Folk-Pop Tunesmith Unveils Hugely Anticipated Second Album; Collection …

    - June 13, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Jun 13, 2013) - Elektra Records has announced its signing of the acclaimed artist Fences. The Seattle-based artist -- known to friends and family as Christopher Mansfield -- will release his much-anticipated second album, entitled "THE INTERNAL DIVING BOARD," later this year.

Produced by Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Of Monsters and Men, Modest Mouse), "THE INTERNAL DIVING BOARD" sees Mansfield evolving his idiosyncratic and ambitious brand of folk-flavored indie rock to a fuller palette including tough basslines, synths and Mansfield's trademark vocal delivery. The new album also features accompaniment by some of Mansfield's musician-friends, including his frequent on-stage cohorts Ben Greenspan -- who also co-wrote material on the album - -and Lindsey Starr, Death Cab For Cutie drummer Jason McGerr, and rapper Macklemore, whom Fences has collaborated with in the past. In addition to co-writing "Ten Thousand Hours" on "THE HEIST," the debut full length from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Mansfield is also the featured vocalist on duo's critically acclaimed track "Otherside (featuring Fences)" which currently boasts over 23 Million views on YouTube.

In announcing the signing, Elektra President Jeff Castelaz said: Fences make music that stops me in my tracks. They've made a record that fits the Elektra credo perfectly: deeply personal, evocative songwriting wrapped in stunning production. This record takes the listener on a long journey narrated by Chris Mansfield."

Mansfield stated, "The legacy of Elektra is stunning. Artists like Bjork and The Cure didn't just release albums, they shaped culture. The current roster is no exception. When Elektra extended their hand, I didn't think twice. It is an honor to join a label that promotes fearlessness."

"THE INTERNAL DIVING BOARD" follows Fences' extraordinary self-titled debut "FENCES," which was co-produced by Sara Quin of Tegan & Sara and greeted with unanimous critical praise for Mansfield's intimate, introspective pop writing upon its 2010 arrival. SPIN named "FENCES" as one of its "10 Best Albums You Might Have Missed This Year," applauding its "sorrowful, self-deprecating, and charming pop-folk songs" for "(flaunting) the assured hooks and astute observations of instant minor classics."

NYLON hailed the album for "(bringing) together (Elliott) Smith's delicately wistful melodies and Morrissey's beautiful melancholia." Mansfield is "a slacker songwriter of some note," declared the Dallas Observer, with the Washington Post commending his "weary voice, finger-picked guitar, and pained-love lyrics." "Mansfield drives a brutally direct heartbreak into the broken, dilapidated slats of a warm but bitter pop," raved the Austin Chronicle, while Seattle's own The Stranger praised "FENCES" for its "thoughtfully crafted pop songs and beautiful acoustic ballads," noting that "soon, with songs this strong, (Mansfield) won't just look like a rock star -- he'll actually be one."

Fences first got underway during Mansfield's stint in Boston, a time spent studying at Berklee College of Music as well as performing and perfecting his haunting songs. He soon relocated to the Pacific Northwest and in 2008, self-released his nascent Fences recordings as the now exceedingly rare "ULTIMATE PUKE EP." The collection earned copious attention from in-the-know fans, ultimately finding its way north into the hands of Sara Quin, one half of Canadian indie-folk icons, Tegan & Sara. Quin fell in thrall to Fences' intuitive, jazz-inflected pop and invited Mansfield to record his full-length debut at her Vancouver studio.

"FENCES" proved the fullest realization of Mansfield's sonic vision thus far (much of which he credits to Quin's collaborative co-production). Songs such as "Girls With Accents" and the country-fired "Sadie" reveal a lyrically gifted artist as adept at complex, creative arrangements as he is at simple, straightforward songwriting.

A charismatic and engaging performer, Fences has also earned high praise as a live act, both solo and with the crack band he gathers to give full life to his stunning songs. In addition to countless headline gigs, Fences has toured alongside such like-minded artists as Against Me! and The Head And The Heart, while also stealing stages at major American festivals including Lollapalooza and the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival.
