Demolition Halted After Body Found Among Rubble

    - April 22, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition of a vacant former restaurant on Greenville Avenue in Dallaswas stopped Monday morningafter investigators found a woman's body inside the burned building.

Heavy machinery began demolishing the vacant former Uncle Julio's location around 7 a.m. Monday, but work was halted when investigators found a body in the rubble around 7:50 a.m.

She was nice. I feel sorry for her, said nearby convenience store worker Almaez Fshayed. Shebelieved she knewthe homeless woman and wonders ifthe woman'sboyfriend may have been trapped in the fire as well.

After finding the woman's remains, andafter learning she may not have been alone, rescuers searched but found no evidence of anyone else having been trapped inside.

The medical examiner removed the womans body andher cause of death, and that of the fire, are both under investigation.

Firefighters said they were aware homeless people often stayed in the building but insist the flames were too intense for crews to search inside while battling the fire.

Most of the entry points were boarded up. We tried to make entry with the knowledge there could possibly could be someone inside. It was difficult. The fire grew too fast. Several sections of the roof collapsed, several air conditioners on top, once the structure because weak started to lean, said Jason Evans, Dallas Fire Rescue. We have to be cognizant as first responders. Sometimes the most important life, is that of our own.

The three-alarm fire in an old Uncle Julio's location caused fire crews to close the road as they battled the blaze. Northbound lanes of Greenville were reopened around 6 a.m., but southbound lanes will be shutdown for an extended period of time.

Around 11:50 p.m. Sunday night, Dallas firefighters responded to the fire in the 7500 block of Greenville Avenue. Fire was visible through the roof of the vacant structure when firefighters arrived. The interior blaze was so intense that firefighters could only work defensively from the outside. Parts of the roof have already collapsed due to the intense heat.

The crews used several ladder trucks and poured thousands of gallons of water per minute onto the fire. Atmos Energy is headed to the scene to cut off the gas to the former restaurant. Once that's done, crews are planning to knock down remains and extinguish any remaining hot spots. The structure is a total loss.

    Living Smart: Carpet Cleaning

    - April 22, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Angie Hicks Print Article

(MCT)Do a quick online search for carpet cleaning and youll find a variety of different methods. The two most common are hot water extraction mostly known as steam cleaning and hot carbonation, often referred to as dry chemical techniques.

So how do you decide which method is best? To start, check the paperwork that came with your carpet, with the carpet manufacturer themselves or with a reputable carpet cleaning company. The most widely accepted cleaning method is hot water extraction.

The high temperature of the water kills bacteria and extracts the dirt out of the carpet, says Tony Solis of All Points Carpet Care in Mooresville, N.C. Its a very deep cleaning compared to dry cleaning.

Solis uses truck-mounted equipment that injects water heated between 180 and 250 degrees Fahrenheit into the carpet under pressure and then rinses out a pretreated solution he sprays onto the carpet. Steam cleaning removes bacteria, dust mites and odors. The most common drawback is a long dry time. Done well, carpet should dry in just a few hours.

Drying time on a carpet should be four hours, not 44 hours, Solis adds.

If inferior equipment is used for steam cleaning, dry times can take more than a day resulting in a mildewy smell and soap can be left behind, attracting more dirt.

The way soap works is, it attracts itself to dirt, says Gil Patterson of A-1 Chem Dry in metro Kansas City, Mo. If you dont rinse it, it will stay in the carpet and continue to attract soil.

Pattersons company uses a hot carbonation cleaning process that requires about one-fifth the amount of water as steam cleaning.

A big, big difference with our process is we dont have any soap or detergent in our solutions, Patterson says. Our general cleaning solution is a natural solution. Its pet and family friendly. And, theres no risk of leaving any type of soap residue in your carpet, which will attract dirt. If the technician leaves soap in the carpeting, you can tell when a customer has that happen to them. It seems like, within a week or two, the carpet seems dirtier than before they had it cleaned.

Ellicott City Begins Repairs To Retaining Wall Damaged By Train Derailment

    - April 22, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (WJZ) Repairs started Monday for a crumbled retaining wall in historic Ellicott City, damaged by a train derailment last year.

Christie Ileto has details on the project moving forward.

Construction crews are removing rocks holding up the embankment of the railroad tracks in historic downtown Ellicott City Monday. Part of the wall collapsed when a CSX train derailed last August, killing two teenage girls standing on the railway bridge when the cars overturned.

Its necessary. Right now, the way the wall has been stabilized since the train took a piece of the wall down, its just a rock slope, said Department of Public Works Deputy Director Mark Deluca.

Howard County Public Works says thats not a permanent fix, as a portion of the spaces arent usable.

The rock is stable. but its only a temporary condition, said Deluca.

Right now, construction workers are getting ready to haul of hundreds of rocks to make way for a 157-foot-long, 13-foot-high concrete wall.

Normally, we would park here and now we park across the river, which is kind of an inconveniencenot for us but more so for our clients, said Sheila Plein.

The project, funded by CSX, closes Parking Lot B in the heart of downtown, forcing some businesses to find other parking accommodations.

Its great that Howard County is on it and fixing what needs to be fixed, said Plein.

Docks by Dave Selects Wahoo Decks, Brings Customers Aluminum Decking with AridDek

    - April 22, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Veteran dock builder prefers AridDek for building cost effective, sustainable and low maintenance boat docks

Gainesville, GA (PRWEB) April 22, 2013

Always looking for ways to improve the quality of his docks, Goodrich hoped to find an alternative material that would last longer and require less maintenance than lumber and metal. Typically, docks get full exposure to sun and hot temperatures, making the lumber too hot to walk on and more susceptible to rotting. With its waterproof, non-slip, cool to the touch surface and innovative design, AridDek alleviated the problems Goodrich had with other materials.

Before I discovered AridDek, I tried a variety of lumber, metal and composite materials, said Dave Goodrich, owner of Docks by Dave. Nothing compares to AridDek. In fact, Ive even been hired to replace lumber, composite and other materials on decks with AridDek. My customers love that it is low maintenance, will outlast other dock materials and looks great too.

With a tongue-in-groove design that provides a beautiful, low-maintenance non-combustible deck surface, AridDeks textured powder coating provides a safe, non-skid surface that naturally stays cooler to the touch than traditional decking planks. Unlike composite products, AridDek has a zero fire rating, is non-combustible and wont smolder.

Boat and dock builders are seeing the value in recommending aluminum materials and AridDeks features make it an ideal building product for marina applications, said Jon Bailey, Vice President of Wahoo Decks. Its naturally UV resistant to the deteriorating effects of direct sunlight and because the aluminums high thermal conductivity dissipates heat, the deck stays cooler than most wood or composite surfaces.

    About Wahoo Decks

Headquartered in Gainesville, Georgia, Wahoo Decks is a leading manufacturer of award winning outdoor decking products. Wahoo products have been engineered to be uniquely low maintenance and more resistant to natural elements than traditional decking products. Wahoo Decks also offers Wahoo Rail, a complete line of commercial grade aluminum railing and AridDek, a waterproof aluminum decking product.
