When it comes to making a positive, tangible contribution to the community, volunteering to help Habitat for Humanity create simple, decent and affordable homes for partner families is a great way to invest your time and energy.

Just ask the volunteer crew from Strack and Van Tils Sibley Street store in Hammond who showed up for a day of work to remodel the future home of their co-worker, Star Washington.

You know were behind her when you see us out in the rain and cold taking down siding, Takeita Morris said. It keeps you warm when youre moving, so I think we finished a whole lot faster than they thought we would.

Demonstrating how volunteering can be a great team building activity, a total of seven Strack and Van Til employees who typically work in various grocery departments including the deli, produce and seafood departments as well as a cashier and utility service clerk, spent the whole morning outside preparing the exterior of the home located at 6636 Missouri Street in Hammond for a fresh, new look.

This has been a really nice experience, Agnes Gregory said. We werent sure what to expect, and we learned something new. Youd be surprised what you can do. Im looking forward to doing more.

Thats what Habitat is all about, immediate Past President of the Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana Board of Directors and Strack and Van Til Vice President of Finance Keith Bruxvoort said. Its team work. Most people who get involved get involved again.

According to Habitats Construction Manager Scott Cearing this home, which was donated to the organization about a year ago, should be ready for Star and her six-year-old son Abontie in approximately four to six weeks.

Its essentially the same process whether were doing a build or remodel as far as securing permits, scheduling volunteers and acquiring materials. But, the way we approach remodels is a little different from new construction in that we need to assess how far we need to go, he explained. In this particular home, were going to replace all of the electrical, outlets and plumbing fixtures. Were going to add new drywall prior to painting and decorating, and were taking the exterior down to the wall sheeting. We have new windows, siding and doors, and well be blowing in new insulation with R-values above todays standards. Our goal is to keep the heating costs within $100 for the worst winter months so the homeowner can keep those energy bills down.

A second generation Habitat partner family, Stars mother Joyce Washington has been living in a Habitat home since 1990.

She encouraged me to talk to the people at Habitat, Star explained. Were currently living in an apartment on 164th Place in Hessville so this works out really well. My son can stay in the same school. Im looking forward to having the peace of mind of living in my own home. Its such a nice neighborhood. Living in an apartment can be a challenge with children who tend be loud at times. The backyard is going to be great for my son. A place where he can play thats off the streets. When the weather gets a little nicer, Im going to bring him to help me rake up the yard and pick up sticks. Were so excited to move.

Strack and Van Til Day jumpstarts Habitat remodel

Floodwater from the Des Plaines River has started to recede in Des Plaines and was at 10.67 feet as of 8:45 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The river crested at 10.92 feet Friday, the highest on record.

As the cleanup begins, garbage collection in the city will be unaffected and resume as normal starting Monday. However, the collection of yard waste has been suspended until further notice.

Public works crews will help ARC Disposal with debris collection, along with the collection of sandbags in flood affected areas. Sandbags should be placed at the curb separate from other debris. Collection will continue until all bags have been recovered. Once the sandbags are removed, the streets will be swept to remove any remaining debris.

Residents are asked to put flood-damaged items out at the curb, but no household waste or electronic waste will be collected.

Residents should be aware that a permit is required for nearly all construction work, even if related to post-flooding repairs. That includes: electrical wiring, panels, conduit, or junction boxes; insulation; wall framing; windows; exterior doors; roofing; siding; fireplaces; boilers; water heaters; generators; fences; decks and stairs; concrete, asphalt, or paver brick driveways, sidewalks, patios, stoops, and stairs; demolitions; extensive interior remodeling work; fire sprinklers; grading changes, retention walls, or other landscaping involving topographical changes; low voltage alarms and phone wiring; mechanical systems (heating and air conditioning); new structures and any structural changes; plumbing (water heaters, etc.); sewer repairs or clean-outs; sheds; shoring and foundation repairs; signs, banners, and tents; swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs.

The only work that does not require a permit is removal/replacement of carpet or tile, replacement of drywall (unless insulation also is being replaced), or replacement of cabinetry (unless plumbing or electrical work is involved).

City officials are urging residents to report flood damages to their insurance companies, and to be careful when choosing contractors to clean up or repair their homes and businesses.

To avoid contractor fraud, residents should use reliable, licensed contractors, ask to see a license, or call the Community Development Department to find out whether the contractor is licensed to work in Des Plaines.

Atmos Energy budged a few feet from its original plans to cut down trees within a 12.3-mile stretch in Flower Mound as part of its goal of cleaning up its right-of-way for better pipeline access.

And while Flower Mound Town Council members were hoping for more, they ultimately had to settle for Atmos' latest proposal.

Atmos' original plan last year was to remove trees within 50 feet of its easements, or 25 feet on either side. During a council work session Thursday, Atmos officials said they are willing to reduce its clearing area to within 30 feet of the easements, or 15 feet on either side. In most cases, however, the removal will be 40 feet from the easements.

Atmos first notified the town last fall of its plans to remove trees to better operate.

The pipeline system itself runs 6,000 miles, spanning from the Red River to Houston and from West Texas to Carthage in East Texas. It provides natural gas to Atmos Energy Corporation Mid-Tex Division customers and CoServ customers.

Flower Mound's portion of the pipeline equates to about 12 miles. The path starts near the Lakeside Business District in the southern end of town, and travels north through The Sanctuary, the Wellington subdivision and Tour 18 Golf Course. The Sanctuary is the first conservation neighborhood the town created and contains many old trees.

"This proposal gives us something to where it doesn't look like we went through and clear cut the trees," said Charles Yarbrough, vice president of rates and regulatory affairs for Atmos Pipeline-Texas. "And it preserves some trees. We think it strikes the right balance of saving the trees and providing safety to the residents. But you can't do the work right on top of the pipe. You need room to get the equipment in."

Yarbrough said Atmos officials will meet with the 80 impacted homeowners in about three weeks to present them with encroachment agreements and to answer questions. Two weeks later, work is expected to begin.

Council members fought against the tree removal, urging Atmos to closely examine how many trees actually need to be taken down. Atmos and the town each conducted tree surveys to get a more accurate analysis of how many trees are located near the pipeline. As a result, the number of trees set to be removed is reduced.

"This is still painful, but it's an accomplishment for us," said Mayor Pro Tem Kendra Stephenson. "We went from them planning to clearcut trees within 50 feet of their easement to 30 to 40 feet, and we're still going to be safe."
