COLUMBUS Window World of Northeast Nebraska has a new Columbus showroom that makes it easier for customers to check out its selection of home improvement products.
The Norfolk-based business is now selling windows, siding and doors through a partnership with Hometown Motors and owner Russ Korth.
Window World of Northeast Nebraska opened a showroom at the 4728 Howard Blvd. automobile dealership to replace the downtown location, and Korth will now sell for the company.
Moving into Hometown Motors has allowed us to be open all day, so somebody can walk in at any time, which is great, said Angie Kruse, manager of Window World of Northeast Nebraska.
Established in 1977 as Northeast Nebraska Insulation and Siding, the family-run business became a franchise of Window World in 2003 and also has a showroom in Sioux City, Iowa.
A Columbus location was added in 2005, but the 2319 13th St. showroom was only accessible by appointment.
Kruse said Korth joins the business as a previous customer who believes in the products.
Its easy to sell something you believe in, she said.
Mike Funkhouser and Jeff White, who started as installers here in 2004, will continue to oversee the Columbus location.
In addition to the expanded hours the showroom will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays Kruse said the new location at the intersection of 48th Avenue and U.S. Highway 81 is more visible and easily accessible.

A whole new World
BOSTON (CBS) Pest control employees inspecting for bed bugs in a South End apartment found more than they bargained for.
On Saturday morning, the pest employees lifted a mattress and instead of bed bugs, found two guns.
Police also found an unsupervised child in the East Brookline Street apartment.
The residents told police they believe the guns belonged to their cousin who was visiting from Florida but could not give police any information about the person.
After detectives searched the rest of the apartment, they found a safe under the bed containing several other guns and 300 rounds of ammunition.
A total of five guns, two with defaced serial numbers and one large capacity firearm, a safe and a scale were found.
Dannie E. Levy, 29, of Mattapan, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm with altered serial numbers, improper storage or a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
Sayira Cooper, 24, of Boston, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm with altered serial numbers, improper storage of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
The childs grandmother was called to care for the child, police said.

New homes are rarely perfect.
Houses are giant puzzles with hundreds of parts, manufactured at different locations and carried to the building site. And try as they might to put together a flawless product, builders and their numerous subcontractors don't always get things right.
Luckily, buyers are more likely to have to deal with cosmetic defects than out-and-out structural failures. Scratched refrigerators, broken bathroom tiles and faulty electrical outlets are far more prevalent than badly cracked foundations or sagging roofs.
But structural defects do occur. According to recently released data from 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty, owners of new homes are as likely to experience major structural damage big cracks in the walls, windows and doors jammed shut, or buckled floors as they are a major fire.
This isn't to warn buyers off new construction. Previous research has found that just 1 in 20 houses will sustain a major structural hit over its lifetime. But 1 in every 4 will experience "some" structural distress.
Based on his review of more than 10,000 structural claims over a 32-year period, Walt Keaveny, chief risk manager of the Denver warranty company, says structural problems can occur from day one. But most claims are reported four to seven years after initial occupancy.
Total losses are not common, but claims can be expensive. According to Keaveny's analysis, it costs $42,000 on average to investigate and repair a structural claim.
With this in mind, here's how this warranty company's chief management expert says home buyers can best protect themselves from such catastrophes:
Deal only with builders who offer an insurance-backed new-home warranty from a reputable company. That may sound self-serving. After all, 2-10 HBW is the country's oldest and largest new-home warranty company. But it is wise advice. A 10-year warranty against structural defects is a must, especially in areas of expansive soil roughly in half the country.
Most warranty companies underwrite builders to make sure they are qualified, which is another reason over and above the homeowners insurance protection to have a warranty. And with an insured warranty, if your builder refuses to repair your house or goes out of business, you will be covered.

QI am writing you about problems I have been having with a Protection 1 home security system. Since the system was installed a year and a half ago, we have had problems with three different smoke detectors giving off false alarms. The company charges close to $200 to come fix the problem, even though it is their equipment that is faulty. The company did waive a couple of those fees but has stopped doing so. We have had to make four service calls in the year and a half, in some cases to fix errors that their service people made on the previous call. Now, we are forced to buy a $10 a month warranty on the Protection 1 equipment so that we do not keep paying service fees every time there is an equipment problem. How can a company charge us money to fix equipment that is not owned by us? Shawn Hanegan, Bedford
AThis home security stuff is complicated. Part of the problem is when one company swallows another company, which then makes fuzzy who owns what and who is responsible for what.
In this case, Protection 1 executive customer relations supervisor Nicole Green explained that the only equipment they consider to be the companys property is the control panel. Smoke detectors and other devices that talk to that panel are the homeowners property, she said, even if they were installed by the company.
Customers are offered warranty plans, Green said, because of that. Given that your situation appeared a bit more tangled, Protection 1 without explaining what provisions they made have resolved your concerns.
The company prepared this statement: We have contacted the customer and this situation has been satisfactorily resolved. Protection 1 has maintained a 95% customer satisfaction rating and an A+ Better Business Bureau Rating. On this occasion, we were able to satisfactorily answer the questions the customer had and clarify the facts surrounding this particular instance.
For others dealing with home security companies, particularly if theres a different company involved than the one you started with, its important to understand what youre responsible for and what additional costs you could be facing.
