Those with the luxury to do so took the opportunity to ask themselves, "do I really need this?". Unfortunately there were many who found the company they worked for had been forced to do the same with their jobs. Usefulness is in the eye of the economy.

My own purge had only one criteria: Does it hurt? Do these earrings poke me in the neck? Does the waistband of this dress relocate some organs, does the item in question rub, pinch, itch, leave a green stain? Do these shoes squish my toes? I have no time left for being uncomfortable. Ive spent decades standing because I cant sit or pulling on a camel toe because its taken that long for me to accept the size I am isnt the same as the one I want to be. Its the clothing equivalent of putting up with bad behaviour because you dont have good enough boundaries. No more being bullied by my frocks, made to feel unattractive by my jeans. As Elizabeth Gilbert discovered in Eat, Pray, Love: you can just go up a size.

With my wardrobe thus renovated, I turned my attention to the house. After staring out its windows for seven weeks over lockdown I couldnt ignore how dirty they were a moment longer, plus the house, as my shelter and retreat from contagion, had become an extension of my psyche. Both could do with a bit of a spring clean but I only had the energy for one.

I hadnt asked for a special air-powered hose system that softened the water particulates, making it the purest water ever. "I dont think ..." I started. Never mind, rest assured, this was state of the art, said the window guys. It looked like two scuba tanks attached to a tractor engine and sounded like a wood chipper. "Shes an old house, boys," I said, "be gentle." But this was the hydroxychloroquine of window cleaning, I couldnt possibly understand its miracle properties.

When the paint and quite a lot of the putty was blasted right off the windows, I didnt say anything, momentarily just too stunned. Little flecks of white covered the flowerbeds like an enamel snow, winter was coming and the wood was now open to the elements. But I was supporting the local economy so it couldnt be all bad. Shop local, spend local.

The painters came. I was still working from home so it was quite cold with all the windows open. The sander filled the house up with dust, and you could taste the post-war lead in the air. Yes, nailing the drop cloth to the windowsill was a thing they reassured me. What they lacked in finesse they certainly made up for in the application of paint, within and without. Sloppy? Only a godless liberal would go casting blame in the middle of an economic crisis.

The carpet cleaner came. I smiled at her through the patterns the orbital sander had made on the glass, reminiscent of Spirograph art, just more permanent. I was making Oamaru great again.

The next day, opening the bedroom window required some force, like unsealing an ancient tomb. It might have been painted together, but I didnt say that. Howard Carter never opened anything with more trepidation than I did right then. A loud "crack!" announced the breaking of the window frame. I went out into the garden and stared up at the splintered wood. Rebuilding an economy single-handed isnt easy. Ask anyone.

The joiner came. I was beginning to feel like the woman who swallowed a spider to catch a fly. I dont know why.

The joiner was lovely. He reminded me of my West Coast Uncle Merv, always dressed in shorts and long wool socks. Sunny of smile, big of glasses. He was absolutely the sweetest man, with a bushy black beard of the kind young urban creatives try to grow. He unscrewed the window and took it away to his place.

I looked out through the empty socket at the memorial oaks, nothing between me and the world. Down the road, some hopeful soul kept raking the dropped leaves into piles for the wind to scatter.

The joiner brought the window back a few hours later, all fixed. He wouldnt take payment. "It was only a little job," he said.

It didnt hurt at all.

Ingredients:

Method:

1. Heat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5

2. Peel the garlic and the ginger. Finely chop them and put into a bowl.

3. Add the yoghurt, lemon juice, paprika, turmeric and cumin.

4. Finely chop the chilli along with the seeds and add to the mix.

5. Season with a little salt and black pepper and mix well.

6. Make some cuts in the top of the lamb. Then, rub the paste over the top of the lamb and into the cuts.

7. Put the lamb into a roasting dish.

8. Pour some water in the bottom of the dish- just enough to cover the base of the tin.

9. Cover the lamb loosely with some tin foil roast in the oven for 120 mins.

10. Top the water up in the bottom of the roasting dish as youre roasting this helps to steam and roast the lamb at the same time.

11. Take the lamb out of the oven cover with another piece of tin foil and allow the lamb to rest for 15 mins before carving.

Mrs Hinch fans have also recently set up their own Facebook pages where they can share their own cleaning finds inspired by Mrs Hinch.

One Mrs Hinch fan told Facebook to forget about cleaning products, and shared her hack to clean windows that involves tea bags.

Mrs Hinch says the product is very versatile and is great for removing smudges from glass tables and fans have even said it can clean the oven to remove residue.

Another cleaning fanatic posted onto a Mrs Hinch Fan group on Facebook how she used the product to remove stains from her carpet.

She said that she left the product on the stairs for around 15 minutes before spraying a carpet cleaner onto and leaving for a further 20 minutes.

The Mum then explained how she scrubbed the stairs with warm water with a bristle brush before drying the carpet with a towel to pick up any remaining product.

The after photos showed the carpet completely stain-free and only took about an hour.

Always read the label before using cleaning products to make sure that they can be used on the surface that you are intending to use it on.

Speaking to Fabulous Online, Lucy revealed: I have had my oven cleaned professionally before and she did a fabulous job of the hob and window.

"However, there is always this horrible stubborn bit everyone seems to struggle to get off including a professional cleaner."

Revealing her super simple method, Lucy added: "I sprayed the Elbow Grease and left to soak for 30 minutes.

"Once I had done this, I used a scourer and an old spoon to scrape from side to side and remove the marks."

Another fan raved about the 1 Elvis Elbow Degreaser cleaning product on social media explaining how she washed her sons clothes with the cleaning spray.

The pictures show a previously yellowed T-shirt now sparkling white after using the Elvia Elbow Degreaser product.

Cadillac has a couple key goals as it battles to maintain its share of the luxury market, and ultimately grow.

First, it has to stand out against a wide array of luxury competitors (Acura, Tesla, Audi, Lexus, Infiniti, Lincoln, Benz and BMW among them). This alone is a daunting task.

The other goal is to capture the next generation of luxury car buyers, with the goal of getting them in the Cadillac family so they remain loyal as they buy or lease luxury vehicles in the future. In order to do this, you need new vehicles that will garner attention that are also somewhat affordable for entry-level buyers.

With that in mind, Cadillac developed the XT4, a compact SUV that debuted in 2019 and sees minor changes for 2020. This vehicle sits on the low end of the Cadillac luxury crossover lineup, and is priced to sell to first-time luxury buyers.

I recently spent some time in a 2020 Cadillac XT4, and Im back with a full review on how it compares in a segment where you really need to shine to stand out.

2019 Cadillac XT4 Sport

LOOKS

The 2020 Cadillac XT4 offers the usual aggressive but stylish design that Cadillac fans have learned to love over the years.

The XT4 is part of the family of crossovers which also includes XT5 and XT6, the new naming convention which hopefully will stick around since I can't keep track of all the changes anymore. The XT4 features LED headlamps and tail lamps, with front cornering, as well as LED turn signals, passive entry and keyless start.

The exterior of my test vehicle featured a silver metallic paint job, while the interior was jet black with cinnamon accents.

The interior design of the XT4 was well thought-out by Cadillac. Up front, seats are extremely roomy, and back seat leg room is also strong for the segment. Seating is available for up to five people.

One area where the XT4 does fall short is cargo space, as numbers are lower than some rivals with the rear seats up or down. On a positive note, the rear does have a 60/40 split to boost storage options depending on the number of rear passengers.

The interior design emanates luxury better than many of this segments offerings. The high-quality seating was plush and cozy and features lumbar support for both front seats, and driver settings can be saved via the memory package.

Drivers in colder climates would be wise to opt for the cold weather package, which includes front heated seats, rear outboard heated seats in rear, and a heated steering wheel.

2019 Cadillac XT4 Sport

Buyers who choose the Sport trim level will get attractive design features including a gloss black mesh grille, gloss black window moldings and specific Sport alloy wheel options.

Luxury and Premium Luxury models will get you a grille featuring bright metallic accents, satin aluminum window moldings and satin chrome-accented door handles.

HOWS THE RIDE?

A 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder turbo engine powers all trim levels of the 2020 XT4. This power plant brings a boost in fuel efficiency, and is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. It offers 237 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque.

FWD and AWD versions of the XT4 are available. My test vehicle featured all-wheel drive, a four-wheel independent suspension, selectable driving modes, stability control and traction control.

Driving modes included Touring, Snow/Ice, and Sport, and can be adjusted based on your driving situation and how you want to get around. There is also an available Active Sport Suspension featuring Continuous Damping Control.

I was happy with the acceleration, handling and overall power of the XT4. Though it is not best in class in any of these categories, it is one of the better performers overall and will satisfy most drivers. The overall ride quality was also extremely smooth, as a luxury ride should be.

One small gripe is that Cadillac uses a unique shifter design that most people wont be used to maneuvering. It doesnt take long to learn it though, so not a huge deal in the long run.

TECHNOLOGY, SAFETY

I have long questioned the quality and user-friendliness of the Cadillac User Experience (CUE) system that was in place for many, many years. And it looks like Cadillac finally got the hint from so many frustrated users, and has made an upgrade to the infotainment setup in the XT4, a truly positive change.

While it still has its quirks, this new CUE system is nowhere near as dramatic and unreliable as the former system was. Better late than never, and Im curious to see future evolution to make it even better.

The updated infotainment system features an 8-inch color display, and is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphone mirroring. It now offers a rotary infotainment controller, which is much easier to use than the touch controls on the previous system.

Satellite radio comes as a trial and then you must subscribe. OnStar services are available on the vehicle, and you can choose a Wi-Fi hotspot in the vehicle. You also get a hands-free liftgate, universal home remote, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Safety ratings are another huge benefit of the XT4. Almost every government rating is at 5 stars with a couple at 4 stars. It may be a smaller SUV, but is still very very safe.

Safety and Security features on the XT4 include: Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Safety Alert Seat to warn you when you're exiting your lane, Front and Rear Park Assist, and Forward Collision Alert. All of the systems worked very well in my experience and were not overzealous.

An optional feature is an embedded navigation system, which also includes real-time traffic reports. This feature also includes an upgrade to a Bose Centerpoint surround-sound 13-speaker audio system.

An optional driver assist package includes: Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control, Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking, and Reverse Automatic Braking. Wireless phone charging is also an option. Cadillac Connected Apps are available, as are Teen Driver controls, and the vehicle is loaded with air bags. An HD Rear Vision Camera (which looks and works great) and Rear Park Assist are standard features on the XT4.

MPG

Official fuel mileage numbers on the AWD version of the XT4 come in at 22 city/29 highway/24 combined. The FWD version can reach 30 mpg on the highway.

These numbers, courtesy of the new fuel-efficient engine, are near the top of the class in the luxury compact SUV category, and were confirmed during my time driving the vehicle. If fuel economy is a key box for buyers to check, theyll have a lot to like in the XT4.

PRICE

My test vehicle with a good number of add-ons was priced just over $48,000, and the XT4s base price starts about $36,000. These are very competitive numbers in the luxury segment, and will help to attract new buyers who may have a lower budget.

When you consider that the XT4 competes well in most categories against more expensive alternatives, it comes across as a steal.

Warranties include a 4-year/50K mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty, and 6-year/70K mile powertrain limited warranty.

BOTTOM LINE

SUVs are the segment where auto companies will make their money going forward. And Cadillac should see success attracting new luxury buyers to the brand with a vehicle like the XT4.

The price is right, its more stylish than many of its rivals inside and out, and the drive is enjoyable. Add to that a bevy of tech and safety features, and you have a truly competitive package.

Especially if someone is looking to buy domestic, they now have a compelling reason to do so.

While Mission Begin Again is taking flight in the state, resuming the services of house help in societies still remains a grey area. While some housing societies feel its up to flat owners, others say they don't want to take a risk, while an Oshiwara society has insisted that house help download the Aarogya Setu app. Varying positions on the matter has pitted residents of housing societies against each other.

Prashant Basrur, resident of Tarapore Gardens in Oshiwara told mid-day, "I don't understand how a maid living in a non-containment zone coming at my place is an issue of the society? If she is taking all the precautions while coming to my house, it's nobody's business. Women who don't have smartphones can't have the Aarogya Setu app and the green tick. But, our society officials claim these are Mumbai police's rules. Maids are not a luxury and nowadays when, Work From Home is keeping us glued to the laptop, we need them like never before."

"If the government has allowed the distribution of newspapers, why can't we have maids and drivers? We have to move forward now, of course with the utmost care," Basrur added.

GP Mahadik, chairman of Sainath Estate CHS in Mulund, had a different opinion. "We have 42 flats in the society, many children and senior citizens as well. So we have decided not to allow any maids for now. Even parcels get dropped with security guards and if a car cleaner is coming to the society, he is not supposed to handle the key. The owner of the car must go down, open and close it for the cleaner. We will wait till June 8 to see if any new guidelines are issued."

"The lockdown and subsequent Unlock 1.0 are ambiguous. There can't be a straight yes or no on the matter of maids. Their livelihoods depend on the work. But the COVID-19 fears are real," said Ankita Deshpande, a resident of Sant Namdeo CHS in Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai. "My society hasn't allowed maids to resume work and I don't think we would allow them till the end of June at least. But, the majority of the residents of my society are paying maids their monthly wages along with extra money to help them tide over this difficult time. Every housing society should decide for itself whether to allow them or not depending on the ratio of old and young persons, the number of positive cases in locality and safety precautions that need to be strictly implemented if maids are allowed to work. But, it is still advisable to avoid calling them back to work till the end of June even in areas where COVID-19 cases are few," Deshpande added.

The secretary of a housing society in Vikhroli East said, "At the beginning of lockdown, we had unanimously decided to restrict the entry of maids. After unlock was announced, we asked BMC officials about their rules or directions, but did not get any clarity. So for the time being, we will continue the restrictions for a few more weeks. We had asked senior citizens who need maids full day and were willing to give special permits, but they too refused. Most of our maids come from an area that is a hotbed right now."

Dnyanesh Patil, state coordinator of Rashtriya Gharelu Kamgar Chalwal, said, "In Mumbai, we have approximately 2 to 2.25 lakh household workers or maids. Out of them, hardly 15 per cent are working. But, as restrictions are easing, we are hopeful that women will get back to work. But, there is still reluctance or rather fear among housing societies."

"Societies want maids to have Aarogya Setu app, testing and whatnot. We are urging societies to take hygiene measures such as gloves, sanitisers for maids. They are ready to do it. Around half the employers were paying salary to their maids, but what about the other half? They have somehow survived, but work should resume."

Manisha Mane from Chembur said that women from her area have not been called to work. "I live at PL Lokhande Marg. We were paid for March and April but haven't had money since May. We had approached the societies but they said the government has not clarified on the matter. We are in a difficult situation now."

Another maid, Savita Pandit, from Vashi Naka, said, "I just got my salary for March month. I did not get any food or ration all this time. We are not sure whether our employers will call us. We are now trying to form a self-help group because we don't want to die of starvation. Employers think we will bring the infection to their homes. Till the time this fear remains, it'll be difficult for us to resume work.
