Keep It Dry
Check for any water issues in your basement before beginning the planning process. Obvious signs are pools of water or drips coming through the below-grade walls. Check outside to make sure the ground is graded away from your foundation. Also look for cracks in your foundation walls and repair that damage if necessary.
After you've taken care of any moisture problems and have come up with your plan, it's time to check with your local municipality to see if you'll be required to get any permits. This is particularly important if you're planning plumbing and electrical work, which may have to be inspected.
Basement walls and floors are generally some sort of masonry, cement, block or brick, and a regular 'ol nail or screw isn't going to cut it when attaching framing. You'll need to get the proper fastener and possibly anchors for your wall type. In some cases, you may need to rent a powder-actuated fastener, sometimes referred to as a shotgun fastener. These are similar to a shotgun in that they use a charge to fire a fastener into concrete.
Even after taking care of any moisture issues, your basement can become a damp place. You'll need to add a vapor barrier to both the walls and floors prior to framing and finishing off these surfaces. It's a good idea to lay down a vapor barrier for a day or two, then check underneath to see if and how much moisture may be coming through before continuing.
Despite all efforts, even with a vapor barrier, moisture can still be an issue. Create a slight offset from the outside wall by adding thin slats of wood or metal called furring strips. These strips can also be used to help level out a wall that may be wavy to create a flat surface for adding framing.
Insulation will not only help control the temperature inside your basement, it may also add another layer of moisture control, as well as help dampen sound from the outside. Choose an insulation that includes a vapor barrier on both sides. Other options include a spray foam insulation. Be sure to check code requirements for this type.
A drop, or suspended, ceiling offers a way to both conceal and provide access to electrical and plumbing lines via the removable tiles. You may have a preconceived notion that such a ceiling will look more like an office than a home, but there are plenty of attractive options available. These ceilings will reduce the amount of overhead space available, so keep that in mind when planning.
Recessed lighting in a basement is a good option, because they won't take up valuable overhead space that a light fixture would. Plus, it's easy to install with a drop ceiling.
Warm air rises, so it makes sense to install heating vents at floor level. Baseboard heating is a good option, but make sure it makes sense for your plan and is easy to tie into your existing HVAC system. For a finished space, you want to make sure you're not relying on space heaters, so plan carefully.
Keep the space housing an HVAC unit or units and water heaters clear, open, and unfinished. These spaces have specific code requirements for spacing and framing, plus you'll need access for inspection and/or repairs. You may be tempted to finish off this area, but keep it simple to avoid problems later.

The cost of a basement remodel can be significant, but your potential return on investment is just as considerable. In addition to adding to your living space, the average basement remodeling project also increases your home's resale value. The National Association of Realtors considers basement remodels to be among the most valuable home renovations.
Installing a bathroom in your basement can significantly increase its functionality. Of course, it will also add to the costs of your basement renovation. Some cost factors to consider include:
After your new bathroom is complete, or you have remodeled an existing space, get it inspected to ensure all plumbing and electrical installation are done correctly. If your bathroom needs to be installed from the ground up, expect to pay somewhere between $6,000 and $15,000 for the entire project. If your basement is already finished but does not yet have the necessary plumbing for a bathroom in the space, you can expect to pay between $200 - $500 to hire a plumber.
Of course, you can decrease these costs if you decide to only install a powder room in your basement. In that case, you will not need plumbing for a bathtub or shower, decreasing both costs and time of installation.
If you choose to divide a large space into separate rooms, remodeling your finished basement might include framing work. Several elements will impact the cost to frame these rooms during your basement renovation:
After new walls in your basement are framed, drywall must be applied before a room can be finished. Here are some considerations to keep in mind if you want to add new drywall to an existing, finished basement:
Generally speaking, most homeowners spend about $1.50 per square foot for their drywall installation. Of course, these costs can range based on the professional you choose and the area in which the drywall needs to be installed.

Of course, you are not limited to remodeling your basement in a way that adds basic rooms or a bathroom. In addition, you can also add a number of other renovations to transform the space.
A home theater is the ultimate solution to watching sporting events or movies with guests and family. Installation of a mounted 48-inch TV with appropriate wiring and seating will cost about $1,300. At the same time, a full theater with digital sound, projector and screen, and custom seating can cost as much as $16,500.
Once you add some of the custom features above, that return on investment can rise even further. Some realtors, for instance, consider adding a bedroom to add about $100 per square foot to the value of the home. According to that estimate, a new 12x12-foot bedroom in your basement raises your home's value by just under $15,000.
Adding a bathroom or extra living space comes with similar value improvement. And that doesnt even consider the additional joy you and your family will get out of the new space, or the increased speed at which a home with a wet bar or home theater in the basement might sell on the open market.
Make no mistake: a basement remodel is a major project. An understanding of the variables above can give you a better understanding of what awaits you, and how to plan for it.
You can customize your renovation with your budget and preferences in mind, ultimately arriving at a better basement for both residents and visitors. Considering the improved resale value thanks to the renovation, a well-planned and executed remodel will be well worth your investment.

If you are interested in an attic remodeling estimate and want to prepare your budget for an attic renovation cost we are ready to guide and advise you regarding your home attic renovation project as we are highly experienced and have the team and resources to complete your project at a low cost and in a fairly short time frame.
Below are two pictures of one of the attics that we updated recently. This attic is in a home that is almost 100 years old and was used as storage for a lot of junk and we converted it beautifully within a couple of weeks from an ugly old attic to a beautiful master bedroom unit, including a bedroom space with a small living room area, a bathroom with a shower and another area that the homeowner uses as a small office area with his computer. All of this additional space added at least 1200 square feet of usage that also increased the property value by at least 20%.
You need to have the right contractor to complete an attic renovation as there are usually a lot of limitations as far as space, the height of the ceiling, the light, plumbing issues, electrical additions and heating and cooling systems that all need to be modified and considered specifically for the attics condition as you need to consider the height of the ceiling, the temperature and humidity in the attic, the light. In this particular case, we added six skylights which created sunlight all day long to the attic all day long and saved electricity during the day.
Attic work usually requires a permit and depending on the work to be done and how far you want to go with remodeling and costs, different permits need to be issued and we are ready to guide you and discuss the necessary steps in order to file a permit and to apply for one until completion and getting the final approval.
If you are planning to convert your attic into another extra unit that you may be able to rent, you might want to check with your local town or with your zoning officer first to see if it is permitted to use it as a separate unit or if it can only be done as adding additional living space to your existing home or apartment.

Siding is an important part of your house. Its a shell that protects, insulates, and decorates your home all at the same time. How well it does this depends on which siding you choose, and there are many options.
Vinyl is made of two PVC layers extruded and bonded together to form the planks. The outer layer is very durable while the inner layer is often a less-durable mixture to keep the cost down.

Vinyl is easy to install and maintain. Installed correctly, the most common issues result from the siding being too tightly attached. Wood siding offers a lot of character. Most often milled from sustainable resources, its very versatile and can be stained or painted in any color desired. Installation and repair are easy, and it comes in shingles, clapboards, drop siding, vertical boards, and wooden sheet siding.

Wood is easy to install and repair, but the maintenance can be costly and time consuming. It requires treatment every year or two, more frequently if non-toxic, eco-friendly products are used. However, many homeowners consider the warm, natural look worth the effort.

Engineered wood is made of wood product such as sawdust and wood flakes held together by a bonding agent. This creates a strong but lightweight material that is less expensive than natural wood.

Engineered wood is an affordable option to natural wood. You can get it pre-primed or pre-finished to save time on the installation. However, it requires the same maintenance as natural wood. Without this maintenance, it will deteriorate faster than natural wood.

Metal siding is most commonly available in aluminum, but corrugated steel siding is not without its charm. A very durable material, its immune to many insects and can withstand weather extremes. It can be stamped into many shapes and styles.
Aluminum can be coated with vinyl, which can be textured to imitate other materials. Both steel and aluminum can be coated with vinyl instead of paint to give your siding color. Though often associated with industrial buildings or mobile homes, metal siding can make a home look both warm and modern, especially when combined with trim made of other materials (such as wood).

Fiber cement is made up of sand, cement and wood/cellulose fibers. Its very durable and can withstand intense storms, but it is very heavy and requires special tools and knowledge to install properly. The most popular fiber cement siding is Hardieboard.
Cost: about $0.75 to $5.00 per square foot, shingles cost $2.00 to $8.00 each
Fiber cement requires professional installation that can cost as much as the material itself. Material produced before 1980 may have asbestos, which will require an asbestos abatement contractor. However, once installed, it is very durable and resistant to many factors that would destroy other materials, including fire.

For durability and strength, its hard to beat brick and stone. As a naturally insulating material, it can help lower your heating and cooling bills. It is, however, very expensive and requires the skill of a mason to install.
Brick and stone have a classic, luxurious look. It can help keep your house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. However, this long-term saving might not be enough to offset the up-front cost. Unlike other materials, it cant be installed over the top of existing siding. However, unless you live in an earthquake zone, there is rarely, if ever, a need to replace it.

Liquid spray on siding, or liquid vinyl as its called, is a spray of high-quality PVC polymers and resin used to coat the exterior of a house. It isnt a siding itself so much as it is a coating for existing siding. It can be applied to any surface, but may not be suitable for wood as it wont let the wood breathe.
Cost: about $3.00 to $6.00 per square foot installed
