EPDM REPAIRS AND COATING:

EPDM ROOF COATING: The best EPDM coating depends on your application and environment. We have products for roofs which get light foot traffic, products for enhanced heat reflection, and such. RoofMate HT is most popular. All repairs should be made before coatings are applied. EPDM Cleaning AND Priming using an EPDM primer is a must, before applying any coating to assure good long-term adhesion, regardless of manufactures claims. Primer is SCRUBBED into the surface, as per manufacturers instructions.

SEAMS: This is the most important area of any roof installation, repair or replacement. Three popular methods:

SEAMS REPAIRS: EPDM seam failures are a common first point of aging related wear out. Old seams can be repaired and reinforced to greatly extend the life of a EPDM roof. First clean the EPDM surfaces to be seamed; apply EPDM Primer with a scotch brite scrub pad and gloves, scrubbing primer into both surfaces; let primer dry, about 10 minutes; then apply Doublestick Seam Tape in between the overlapping layers following seam tape instructions. THEN on the outside surface along the exposed seam, clean and apply EPDM Primer and apply a secondary Coverstrip layer. EPDM Coatings are applied last, over all repairs. EPDM primer should be used under all coatings.

EPDM CLEANING: The can be accomplished several methods, depending on the type of cleaning needed. The objective is to remove all surfaces contaminate and create a fresh surfaces. Burnishing with a plastic scrub pad is quick and effective. EternaClean is also effective. For very large areas, scrubbing with a mixture of TSP and bleach is used by some. Regardless, the final surface must be free of dirt and not have any powder-like residues. Follow cleaning with an EPDM Primer. Special EPDM cleaners are available which etch away a layer EPDM. These are strong materials which can harm other surfaces. Email us for more information.

EPDM MEMBRANE ADHESION: First clean surfaces to be bonded. Stir well, then apply adhesive to both surfaces with roller, and allow solvent to flash off until tacky. Then set carefully roll EPDM adhesive coated membrane into adhesive, rolling out any bubbles as you go. Detail Instructions. EPDM adhesives included water based (VOC / solvent free/ non-flammable), solvent based (greater adhesion), and M1 Sealants (for smaller repairs. Smaller areas and repairs can also use Eternabond Doublestick.

EPDM TEAR OR BUBBLE REPAIRS: Email us at sales@bestmaterials.com with a description of your repair problem for a more detailed recommendation.

Generally smaller tear repairs or (bubbles) can be made by cutting and peeling back the membrane as far as needed to get to solid adhesion areas (cut with a razor knife as needed). Clean deck and the underside of membrane as above. Prime both surfaces. Apply M1 or EPDM adhesive. Lay EPDM Membrane back and roll out bubbles. In high stress areas (most RV roofs), add mechanical fastening along each repair edge using stainless steel ring shank nails or SS staples. Clean the outer layers. Apply Eternabond RoofSeal or EPDM coverstrip, and overlap the coverstrip past the repair line 3 inches in each direction. Roll all seams using a seam roller. Alternative methods:

HOW CAN I TELL ITS EPDM? White EPDM used on RVs is white on the outside and black on the bottom. It bends and forms EASILY (and thus will wrap edges easy). A few newer motor-homes have used TPO or PVC membrane. This will be very stiff. TPO and PVC can also be melted and seams are welded, not glued. Sometimes TPO has an additional black layer on the back which has reinforcement fabric embedded in it. EPDM is not generally produced with a reinforcement.

MORE ABOUT EPDM ROOFING MEMBRANE: EPDM roofing membrane (rubber roofing) is a high performance synthetic rubber (elastomeric polymer) synthesized from ethylene, propylene and a small amount of diene monomer, compounded with carbon black, processing oils and various cross-linking and stabilizing agents. EPDM roofing has been used for over 45 years, with more than 600,000 warranted roof installations and more than 25 billion square feet. Annually, EPDM accounts for over 1 billion square feet of new roof coverings in the United States, and is still the most frequently used roofing material in the marketplace. White EPDM has been installed on RV's since the early 1980's. Providing flexibility, low maintenance, ease of repair, clean appearance, noise insulation, and temperature insulation. White EPDM roofing membrane is now standard on 3 out of 4 new RV's. Now the energy efficiency of white EPDM makes it ideal for house boat roofs, mobile home roofs, and residential flat or low pitched house roofs.

The Church Office Building (COB) is a 28-story building in Salt Lake City, Utah, which houses the administrative support staff for the lay ministry of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) throughout the world.

The building is 420 ft (128 m) tall at roof level and is located within the Temple Square complex on the corner of North Temple and State Street.[1]

The building was designed by George Cannon Young at a cost of US$31 million to build. Construction took place from 1962 to 1972. Upon its completion, LDS Church leadership centralized the offices of the church in this location, which has facilitated the direction of the expanding religious organization. Work performed within the building includes the production of church-related magazines, translation of church materials into numerous languages, regulation of missionary efforts, production of church films, and matters relating to the construction of temples, and more.

The lobby of the building is dominated by a massive mural depicting the Great Commission. The lobby also features a statue honoring Mormon pioneer sacrifices, which depicts a husband and wife burying an infant child. The inscription reads, "That the struggles, sacrifices and the sufferings of the faithful pioneers and the cause they represented shall never be forgotten."

The first four floors of the building expand outward, to the west and east, to form wings. The north side of each of these wings are without windows, each having stone facades, with large ovals containing relief maps of the two hemispheres of the earth. On the tower itself, the southern, western, and eastern facades all feature a closely spaced vertical pinstripe pattern of cast quartzite columns flanking the narrow windows, visually reminiscent of the former World Trade Center in New York City, a contemporary structure. The building's northern facade is marked by a narrow blank wall in the center, indicating the building's elevator and service core, with the regular pinstripe pattern on either side. This central part of the tower rises two floors above the observation deck at the 26th floor, and protrudes outward slightly on the southern side. [2]

The observation deck is open to the public for free, and provides a good view of Antelope Island and the Great Salt Lake to the northwest, the Wasatch Mountains to the north and east, the skyline of the city to the south, the Oquirrh Mountains to the west, and Temple Square to the immediate west.

Visitors can also take a free tour of the gardens surrounding the building. The gardens are completely redesigned every six months, and feature an array of exotic plants and flowers.[3]

Asbestos was a popular fire-proofing material once used in thousands of commercial and consumer products. It wasnt until the late 1970s that the use of asbestos was banned after the Environmental Protection Agency classified it as a known carcinogen. By that time, however, asbestos had been widely used in a large number of construction products, including roofing products, and was a potential source of great harm to those who came in contact with it.

Asbestos was used in roofing products from the 1920s through the early 80s. Its use was so widespread that we now know asbestos-containing materials (products classified as containing at least 1% asbestos) can be found in nearly 80% of structures built prior to 1981. Some roofing products, like asbestos cement roofing, have a life expectancy of 30-50 years so it is likely that asbestos hazards still exist with roof structures that are in place today.

Asbestos was a popular component of many building materials because it was found to be extremely versatile and resistant to heat transfer. Because roofing needs to provide insulation and must be resistant to fire, asbestos was often added to roofing products to serve this purpose.

Asbestos was also extremely durable, making it ideal as a reinforcement component in glues, mortars, and finishing cements. It is also resistant to corrosion and weathering and was used to protect against temperature extremes in roofing material. In most cases, asbestos only comprised 30% or less of a given roofing product or other compound and was mainly added as a reinforcement material.

While asbestos was found in many different types of roofing products such as roofing shingles, asphalt roll roofing, cement roofing and roofing felt, it could also be found in other building products such as pipe covering, various insulation materials, drywall, siding, and even foundation cement compounds.

While asbestos exhibited many powerful characteristics as described above, it also possessed other attributes that made it a very harmful substance. One of the most harmful attributes of asbestos was its microscopic fibers. Asbestos fibers can float freely through the air, particularly when asbestos-containing materials are disturbed, and can be easily inhaled by those in close proximity. Many who inhaled asbestos fibers were not even aware of the hazards they were being exposed to.

When inhaled, asbestos fibers lodge in the outer tissue linings of the lung and abdomen, a thin layer of cells known as the mesothelium. These lubricating membranes are integral to internal organ function. Over time, however, asbestos inflammation on the surface of these membranes can cause scar tissue plaques and an asbestos cancer known as mesothelioma. Many who worked with asbestos materials, particularly those who repaired, modified, or replaced older asbestos materials, may have been harmfully exposed to the material and are at risk to develop respiratory complications as a result of this exposure.

Fortunately, those diagnosed with mesothelioma or other asbestos-related health complications may be eligible for compensation for their injuries. We now know that many asbestos product manufacturers were aware of the hazards that their products posed. Despite this, they continued to manufacture products with asbestos and expose hundreds of thousands to the deadly material without their knowing.
