Asbestos was a popular fire-proofing material once used in thousands of commercial and consumer products. It wasnt until the late 1970s that the use of asbestos was banned after the Environmental Protection Agency classified it as a known carcinogen. By that time, however, asbestos had been widely used in a large number of construction products, including roofing products, and was a potential source of great harm to those who came in contact with it.
Asbestos was used in roofing products from the 1920s through the early 80s. Its use was so widespread that we now know asbestos-containing materials (products classified as containing at least 1% asbestos) can be found in nearly 80% of structures built prior to 1981. Some roofing products, like asbestos cement roofing, have a life expectancy of 30-50 years so it is likely that asbestos hazards still exist with roof structures that are in place today.
Asbestos was a popular component of many building materials because it was found to be extremely versatile and resistant to heat transfer. Because roofing needs to provide insulation and must be resistant to fire, asbestos was often added to roofing products to serve this purpose.
Asbestos was also extremely durable, making it ideal as a reinforcement component in glues, mortars, and finishing cements. It is also resistant to corrosion and weathering and was used to protect against temperature extremes in roofing material. In most cases, asbestos only comprised 30% or less of a given roofing product or other compound and was mainly added as a reinforcement material.
While asbestos was found in many different types of roofing products such as roofing shingles, asphalt roll roofing, cement roofing and roofing felt, it could also be found in other building products such as pipe covering, various insulation materials, drywall, siding, and even foundation cement compounds.
The following partial list of roofing products were known to contain asbestos:
While asbestos exhibited many powerful characteristics as described above, it also possessed other attributes that made it a very harmful substance. One of the most harmful attributes of asbestos was its microscopic fibers. Asbestos fibers can float freely through the air, particularly when asbestos-containing materials are disturbed, and can be easily inhaled by those in close proximity. Many who inhaled asbestos fibers were not even aware of the hazards they were being exposed to.
When inhaled, asbestos fibers lodge in the outer tissue linings of the lung and abdomen, a thin layer of cells known as the mesothelium. These lubricating membranes are integral to internal organ function. Over time, however, asbestos inflammation on the surface of these membranes can cause scar tissue plaques and an asbestos cancer known as mesothelioma. Many who worked with asbestos materials, particularly those who repaired, modified, or replaced older asbestos materials, may have been harmfully exposed to the material and are at risk to develop respiratory complications as a result of this exposure.
Fortunately, those diagnosed with mesothelioma or other asbestos-related health complications may be eligible for compensation for their injuries. We now know that many asbestos product manufacturers were aware of the hazards that their products posed. Despite this, they continued to manufacture products with asbestos and expose hundreds of thousands to the deadly material without their knowing.
Many who have been wrongfully harmed by this substance have turned to a mesothelioma lawyer for help in obtaining compensation for their injuries. To find out more about mesothelioma and how to receive compensation for asbestos related disease, please fill out the brief form on this page and well send our complimentary mesothelioma information packet to you at no cost.

Your Oklahoma City Area homes exterior needs regular maintenance, including Pressure Washing your homes siding, gutters, driveway, and decks. If your homes beautiful exterior is cared for by Morris Pressure Washing it will not only increase the look and the value of your home, but it will lengthen its life and you will avoid paying for major repairs in the future.
Power washing your Oklahoma homes siding and paint doesnt only help the look of your home, but it also prevents numerous problems that could occur otherwise. Mold easily takes advantage of the shaded side of you house. Your paint job wont last long once mildew and mold decide to take residence. Mold will literally eat away at your siding. Not only could it damage your home, but also your health. Left unattended, mold causes a variety of health problems.
Your deck needs serious attention. Open to all the elements, your deck is constantly being bombarded by the debilitating effects of the sun and the rain. Morris Pressure Washing helps clear the wood of decaying mildew and grime that could undermine the strength of the wood. Most importantly, pressure washing helps sealant set into the
The driveway, sidewalk, and brick patio all need maintenance. Pressure or power washing can strip driveways and garage floors of oil and grease. Prevent a fall by power washing the mildew and grime off your sidewalk or brick patio. But the main reason to power clean your driveways and sidewalks is to prevent cracking. Moss can actually leave small impressions in your driveway or sidewalk, and eventually water and the changing temperature can aggravate the damage into a significant crack.
Gutters must be cleaned out to prevent structural problems. Gutters are designed to keep water away from your home. But if the gutters are left unattended, they will become clogged and leak. This excess water collects around the house and whittle cracks into your foundation. Clean them, it saves thousands of dollars. You could clean your gutters traditionally, or pressure washing helps make the job easier.
Who would have thought that such small things could cause so much damage to your home? This is why regular maintenance is so essential for your wallet. When youre done, you will not only be satisfied to be saving money on repairs, but you will be surprised by the difference in the look and feel of your home.

We get this question all the time: How much does it cost to build a commercial building? There is no quick answer and without more information about the project and its location, is essentially akin to asking how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. However, there is some guidance provided we know where you are located and what kind of building you are looking to build. Local economy is a very important factor in construction cost as well as the type of construction you intend to build.
We subscribe to RSMeans, researchers of construction cost data nationwide, and have come across some important current data on the cost of commercial construction for four different commercial project types as a function of their location. Note, that not all types of construction cost the same per square foot, and even more importantly, the cost of construction per square foot varies significantly with location.
Below are four different types of commercial construction and the varying cost per square foot to expect for each in different regions. All graph images are courtesy of RSMeans Construction Cost Data. Data source: Reed Construction Data RSMeans/Charts: Reed Construction Data CanaData
As you can see from the range of cost per square foot, location alone can represent as much as 70% of the cost driver for a single story office building. The median for this type of construction is between $160 and $170 per square foot. Not surprisingly, New York tops the charts for most expensive city to build in for all of these building types.
Convenience stores are generally less expensive to construct than the other building types because of their simpler nature. The median cost for this commercial building type hovers around $100 per square foot.
Because of the new trends in fast food being more boutique and less assembly line, the cost for a typical fast food restaurant is on the rise. Expenses for kitchen equipment also drive this building type to a median of near $200 per square foot, the most expensive of the four building types in this discussion.
It is increasingly important to understand the cost drivers for any commercial project and how building type, construction type and location can all be huge variables thatwill drive your cost per square foot. These arealways a part of the initial programming discussions and the Architectwill play a huge role in helping to define the ranges of cost to expect for the project.
