Star Air To Upgrade Boeing 767 Fleet Flight Decks

    - April 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rockwell Collins' large-format flight displays, inspired by the same display system found on Boeing 787 Dreamliner airplanes, have been selected by Denmark-based Star Air for its fleet of 11 Boeing 767-200BDSF cargo airplanes.

The new flight deck, a collaboration between Rockwell Collins and Boeing for the 757 and 767 aftermarket, brings a series of innovative technologies that dramatically enhance situational awareness, decrease maintenance costs and improve fuel efficiency. The flight deck retrofit solution received initial certification in 2014.

"Since first deliveries to our launch customer, we're seeing the momentum building for the 757/767 flight deck upgrade with domestic and international operators," said Steve Timm, vice president and general manager, Air Transport Systems for Rockwell Collins. "It significantly extends the life of these aircraft while adding new capabilities to meet future airspace requirements, and pilots will benefit from a much more engaging visual environment and intuitive interface."

Installation and subsequent European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification of Star Air's flight display retrofit will begin later this year.

"We selected the large-format display solution from Rockwell Collins for our fleet of 767-200 freighters because we are confident that the upgrade will provide full compliance not only with current, but also with future avionics requirements," said Carsten Hvidegaard Holm, vice president, Technical for Star Air A/S. "The commonality with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, 737 MAX and 777X was a key selling point for us during the decision process as we feel it will ensure future system support and updates. The large-format flight displays will also provide us with a significant weight savings, and it will have a positive effect on our dispatch reliability allowing us to serve our customers even better than today."

The 757/767 upgrade features three large-format 15.1-inch LCD displays that replace six cathode ray tube (CRT) displays and numerous analog instruments to provide operators with a number of benefits, including:

In addition, Rockwell Collins' Head-up Guidance System (HGS) is available for the Boeing 757/767 aftermarket, which further enhances situational awareness and provides more efficient operations through all phases of flight, including departures and approaches in low-visibility conditions, thunderstorm diversion, and quick, at-a-glance flight path monitoring.

Ex On the Beach star Emily Colley strips to a skimpy swimsuit for DJ set

    - April 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

It looks like Emily Colley thinks she's still On the Beach.

The stunning brunette, who appeared on MTV's Ex On the Beach, stripped to a very skimpy swimsuit for a DJ set in Ireland.

Geordie Shore star Gaz Beadle's former fling looked smoking hot as she span the records on the decks in Club V.

The 24-year-old stepped out from behind the DJ booth to reveal a tiny cut-out swimming costume.

We're not sure it's the most appropriate outfit for a nightclub, but Emily is rocking it.

Posing with her hands on her head, Emily flaunted her boobs in the plunging one-piece.

Cut-out side panels ensured there was as much flesh as possible on display.

And the high-cut black number did the job with showing off her enviably trim pins.

Emily completed her look with a pair of strappy black sandals.

Fresh from posing up a storm, the stunner then donned a giant pair of headphones and played hits for the crowds.

Groton FinCom delays vote on Four Corners sewer plan

    - April 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

GROTON -- Still feeling that not enough information was at hand, the Finance Committee chose to defer voting on a recommendation dealing with a proposed sewer system for the Four Corners neighborhood until just before Town Meeting later this month.

The decision not to take a position on the issue came Monday. Committee members were to take final votes on several warrant articles including those for the sewer system.

At issue was a proposal from Town Manager Mark Haddad to install a sewer system at the Four Corners that would connect with Ayer for wastewater services.

The objective is to encourage commercial activity in the area, which has been stagnating for years due to its current reliance on septic rather than sewer services.

Except for a few small businesses across the street, the Shaw's supermarket is the only major business up and running at the busy intersection. Adjacent storefronts stand empty, and a number of undeveloped spots on the same property that have yet to be built upon.

On the same side of Route 119, but across Sandy Pond Road, is another empty lot owned by Joseph Wong. The former Groton Jade Chinese restaurant was there before it was demolished to make way for improvements to the intersection.

Haddad, following through on goals set by selectmen to encourage more commercial development in town, proposed installation of a sewer system in the area thus making the two properties more attractive to such businesses as restaurants, medical offices, and gymnastics studios.

To pay for the proposed sewer system, Haddad said there was a possibility the town might qualify for a state grant that would pay for a substantial portion of the estimated $2 million to $5 million construction cost.

All that would be needed was for the town to appropriate $285,000 to pay for design plans. With those in hand, the project would be "shovel ready" and thus more likely to be looked upon with favor by the state.

If the project went forward, payment in the form of betterment fees for both the design plans and construction would be placed on those property owners who stood to benefit from the new sewer line.

    Where to Eat Outside

    - April 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Plus: Herbal Remedy Ah, spring, when Columbians thoughts turn to eating outdoors. Unfortunately, if youre like me, your porches are coated in pollen and your porch chairs from Target are gobbed with robin poop, so your thoughts are turning to eating on someone elses porch.

Fortunately, any number of local restaurants and bars have nicer porches than us. Here are some favorites, new and old.

    Downtown

Just last week, the Marriott on Main Street set up outdoor tables at Main and Hampton, with a full menu and wait service from Midlands Food Arts outside.

Other places to dine outdoors on Main Street include longtime favorite Hampton Street Vineyard and newcomers Oak Table, Bourbon, Cantina 76, Michaels, Good Life Caf and Cowboy.

Just want to drink? The Sheraton Rooftop Bar is a gorgeous place to be, with a 280-degree view of the city. (Why isnt this bar open during the day? Why doesnt it have draft beer? Serious missed opportunity.)

    Vista

In the Vista, al fresco options include World of Beer, Wild Hare Sports Bar and the nice big second-story deck at Carolina Ale House. Flying Saucer has a covered porch; so does Motor Supply Co. Bistro. And the new Hickory Tavern has a two-story deck.

Across the river in Vista West, Terra has a nice outdoor area, @116 State has some sidewalk tables and Caf Strudel has a deck.

    Digging In: Vine control

    - April 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Our house is built up off the ground with the first floor at about 10 feet up. Two sides of the house have porches that are underpinned with wooden lattice, an ideal surface for growing a number of perennial vines. By planting an assortment of evergreen and deciduous vines that flower at different times, we (and the birds, bees and butterflies) are able to enjoy foliage and flowers almost year-round.

Here is a list of the vines: Cross vine (Bignonia capreolata), Carolina jessamine, Confederate jasmine, autumn clematis, three native honeysuckles, an akebia and Lady Banks rose (not a vine but a runner).

Of all the vines, two of the honeysuckles are the least vigorous in our situation, most likely because they are located on the shadier side of the house. The cross vine and the Confederate jasmine have been the most vigorous and have to be periodically cut back quite severely. Two years ago, the cross vine had its heavy pruning. This year it was the jasmines turn.

This winter was rough on the jasmine. There were a lot of dead leaves and vines with only a few of the main vines showing signs of life. Working from the porch at the top and then from the ground level, I cut and pulled and raked until all that was left were three or four main vines with a couple of sprouts on them. A 20-year-old vine can put on a lot of growth, and I had just removed a pickup truckload of debris off this one.

Stepping back to take a look, I saw that the section of trellis where the jasmine was cut back looked naked, but a few feet over was a cascade of foliage and flowers where the cross vine thrived. I knew it would not be long before the jasmine grew back out, healthier than ever, just as the cross vine had.

Cutting back an old, overgrown vine can be even more daunting than doing a heavy pruning on a shrub or tree. It can be hard to distinguish the live wood from the dead or damaged vines. Removing what you cut out is like getting the knots out of a wad of string it takes patience and sometimes a few extra snips.

Dont be afraid to take the clippers to a vine that has gotten so overgrown that it no longer thrives. A woody vine that has outgrown its support structure is not only unattractive but is likely to end up in a heap, taking the lattice work or trellis with it.

Most woody, perennial vines are best cut back in late winter. I really was running a bit late for doing a heavy cut-back on the jasmine, but now it is done. I dont expect much bloom out of it this year. But by next year, the foliage should be lush once again and come late spring, the sweet fragrance of a multitude of blooms should waif up and into our home.

To learn more about some great vines for our area, see Clemson Extension's publication at http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/plants/ landscape/groundcovers/hgic1101.html.

Cleanup begins after Portsmouth church fire

Fire forces bridge players to evacuate Portsmouth church

PORTSMOUTH Crews descended on the First United Methodist Church Tuesday to begin making repairs and cleaning up after a fire broke out in the area of a wall around a front door Monday afternoon.

Fire damage was confined to the wall and door that leads to a hallway outside an activities room, but smoke filled the church, leaving soot in the sanctuary and other rooms and a smoky smell throughout the stone building that dates to the early 1900s.

Fire officials continue to investigate the cause of the blaze, which began just before 1:30 p.m. at the church on Miller Avenue.

Workers from Insurcomm Construction of Portsmouth spent Tuesday scrubbing the inside walls, floors, ceiling and stained glass windows to remove the soot and the odor of smoke.

Outside, carpenters began rebuilding the damaged doors that were removed from the arched front doorway.

Pastor Sue Ellery said the work is expected to be completed in time for the church to hold a memorial service on Saturday, and its weekly worship service on Sunday.

We have a building full of people at work, she said.

Clear plastic was placed over the pews and other furniture as crews cleaned up. Rugs, cushions and fabrics also had to be treated while equipment was brought in to remove the smell of smoke.

Ellery isnt sure how much the repairs and cleanup will cost, but said the church has insurance that should cover the bill.

Emergency crews rescue 2 workers at church construction site

    - April 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Kansas City firefighters rescued two workers overcome by fumes at a church under construction on Tuesday.

Six firefighting units were called to 201 Westport Road at 9:45 a.m. for what was called a "confined space" rescue.

Authorities said that two construction workers were overcome by fumes while they were waterproofing a basement area at Westport Presbyterian Church.

James Garrett of the Kansas City Fire Department said the rescue took a while. He said it was difficult figuring out exactly what the situation was before they could go down and rescue the men.

We had to get our meters down there and check the atmosphere to see exactly what we had and get guys down there with air packs to recover the individuals, Garrett said.

Firefighters lowered equipment down to the two men. They said one of them was up and moving, but the other man was unconscious. Crews were able to lift both men out and got them to a hospital for treatment of respiratory stress. Both men are expected to be OK.

Crews said the workers were using chemicals that contain acetone. They said the men should have been wearing masks, but they were not.

St. Raphael church construction proceeds smoothly in anticipation of August dedication

Blue skies and warmer temperatures enabled construction workers to apply shingles to the new sanctuary Friday.Beth Mlady/Special to Sun News

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio - New construction continues on schedule and without issue at St. Raphael Catholic Churchon Dover Center Road. Roofers could be seen applying shingles to the new buildings during warmer temperaturesFriday.

The Phase 2 Expansion Projectreceived Bay Village Planning Commission approval in July 2013 and included plans to build a much larger, fan-shaped worship space to allow for 1,100 pew seats and up to 100 choir members. In addition, large gatherings and funeral luncheons will take place in a new community room.

A capital campaign continues to accumulate pledges toward a nearly attained $7 million goal. Ground was broken last summer, and construction was expected to last up to 15 months. The original altar, stained glass windows and crucifix will be reused in the new sanctuary.

Parishioner and project manager Kris McGivney recently expressed her happiness with the way the project is proceeding.

"Things are going extremely well, and we're very excited about it," McGivney said. "I think one of the highlights was a couple of weeks ago when we let people take a walk through the construction to see where we are. They were all very excited about it, to get a feel for what the new church will look like."

Those March 14 and 15 after-Mass visits enabled parishioners to place decorated stones under the location of the future altar, providing a personal and poignant foundation. People also wrote messages and prayers on the unfinished cement floor.

The Rev. Tim Gareausaid Monday he can't wait for the congregation to become permanently settled in its new home. Before then, he added with a laugh, he will need a new pair of shoes to replace his dust-covered ones due to repeatedly walking daily to and from the construction site.

"There is such living faith here," Gareau said about his parishioners. "People are really on board and excited and enthused. We have such a nice team ... here at St. Raphael. It's the hands and hearts of our people. From the smallest among us to the oldest, we're just all working together as a family to make this happen."

Even priests, he explained, have moments of "fear and trepidation" when faced with a task of this magnitude.
