NEW INFORMATION: Fire damages home, sheds in Trempealeau Co.

    - April 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

TOWN OF TREMPEALEAU, Wis. (WEAU) -- Harsh wind conditions spread a wildfire across miles of farmland Wednesday night. It happened just off West Prairie road in Trempealeau County. When crews arrived just before 6 P.M., multiple sheds, along with the side of the house were on fire.

Due to the heavy winds, the fire traveled across this Highway, into neighboring fields.

The Trempealeau County Sheriff's Department says "the fire started in one wall of the residence on the property. No one was home at the time the fire was called in."

Although no one was harmed or injured, the Tri-State Ambulance was called in to assist firefighters throughout the night.

We worked with fire command and set up a medical command and assisted the first responder group in setting up a rest and rehab center and station for the firefighters involved, says Paramedic Chris Molldrem.

There were a few of the gentlemen who were fighting the fire who needed rest and rehab. We monitored their vital signs and made sure they were hydrated and in good shape and returned them to the fire. It went out without any incident, there were no injuries and everyone was returned to duty, says Molldrem.

Close to 10 other first response teams worked with crews Wednesday night. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

------- WHITEHALL, Wis. (WEAU) -- Raging winds helped spread a house fire to area sheds and fields in Trempealeau County Wednesday night.

The Trempealeau County Sheriff's Office says six firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion, after fighting the fire that initially started at N13491 West Prairie Road in the Town of Trempealeau.

Crews arrived at the scene just after 5:30 p.m., and found four sheds fully engulfed. Fire also started in one wall of the residence on the property, and spread to multiple neighboring fields.

International trailer for Tomorrowland sheds light on Disneys mysterious sci-fi film

    - April 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Most movie trailers tend to recycle the same footage over and over again, so its usually worth noting when a preview offers up a significant amount of fresh footage for an upcoming film especially when the project is as shrouded in mystery as Disneys sci-fi adventureTomorrowland.

A new, international trailer forTomorrowlanddebuted online this week, and the brief preview of the film is surprisingly packed with scenes that didnt appear in any of the previous teasersfor the film. More importantly, however, is that the new scenes provide quite a bit of context for the film and its fantastic sci-fi premise.

While we wont go intotoo much detail about what happens in the trailer (so as to avoid spoilers for those who want to preserve the mystery), the footagedoes hint that the film will be somewhat self-aware, with the Disney theme parks and specifically, the Tomorrowland attraction that inspired the film playing a role in the story. The trailer even features a mention of Walt Disney himself.

SCPH shares septic changes with Springfield

    - April 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    4/2/2015 - South Side Leader

SPRINGFIELD Springfield trustees invited Summit County Public Health (SCPH) Water Quality Supervisor Ryan Pruett to the March 26 meeting to discuss changes in regulations coming for the 33,000 septic system users in the county.

Pruett stated the new changes, which went into effect Jan. 1, are designed to address faulty systems. [See related story above.]

We are worried about the ditches and green space affected by failing septic systems, said Pruett. Whats new is that all septic systems will have to have an operational permit. In addition, contractors will be required to file inspection reports on septic systems they service [in the county] to Summit County Public Health.

Pruett explained there are several different types of septic systems, including ones that release gray water or partially treated water that flows into ditches and eventually into waterways, and the changes being adopted will ensure this water is clean.

The permits will be required beginning this spring from all National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) types and other septic systems that were installed prior to 2007 in odd years and continue with discharging systems installed from 2007 to 2013 in odd years. The permit process will continue in 2016 with NPDES systems and those installed prior to 2007 in even years and then with those systems installed from 2008 to 2014.

The permit process will continue through 2018, according to Pruett.

NPDES system owners will have to pay $30 for an annual permit, and all other types will pay $20 or $30 for a two-year permit, according to Pruett.

He added that all NPDES permit holders will be required to complete required sampling, and other septic system owners must complete required maintenance. Service contractors will be required to file reports on all inspections to SCPH, and SCPH officials will monitor these reports and follow up when necessary.

Those systems that are deemed to be failing or not working must be fixed, said Pruett.

Shelter's renovations restore air of healing

    - April 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

WAILUKU, Maui Stacey Moniz already picked her bed out Tuesday evening at Women Helping Women Maui's newly renovated women's shelter.

"The room with the nice windows is mine," joked the organization's executive director.

After years of disrepair, the shelter has been updated with a brand new kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, flooring and a host of other upgrades that have transformed the formerly ailing shelter. About 100 people were invited to witness the renovated facility Tuesday. The event served as a "thank you" to the many volunteers and organizations that lent a hand in the project.

"It takes your breath away," Moniz told the Maui News. "We never could have done this, but because of the many people that really care about us in this community, that's how this came together. There's so many people in this community that want to make our shelter beautiful.

"It's stunning," she said. "It looks like a model home in Wailea."

The effort to repair the over-100-year-old structure began July 2, when a task force of volunteers was formed: Deeana Davis, Laks Abraham, Renee Ward, Lena Staton and Sandra Florence. Davis, who served as chairwoman, said the shelter received generous donations of furniture and other items, and initially planned to place them inside and "call it a day."

"But we came in and realized we can't just put a Band-Aid on it," she said. "We knew we got to do this. It has to happen. We need to have the women and children and staff of the shelter feel valued and heal. When you walked in before, it was so many years and years of wear and tear, so we gutted the entire shelter with new flooring, painting, lighting.

"You name it, we did it."

The seven-bedroom, two-story house had four of its five bathrooms completely renovated with new tile floors, mirrors and granite countertops. Bedrooms were bright and welcoming with new mattresses, bedsheets, lamps, ceiling fans and dressers.

More than 4,000 square feet of new flooring was installed and three offices were cleaned and updated: a counseling room, house manager office and 24-hour Crisis Hotline intake office. A children's play room also was redone and will now remain open at all times, unlike previous years.

Wanted Felons Flood Hotel Room While Springs Police Wait for Warrant

    - April 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Saturday morning two wanted felons barricaded themselves inside their hotel room at MCM Elegante Suites Hotel.

When police tried to get them to open their door the pair turned on the fire sprinkler, flooding the room.

Colorado Springs police were waiting on a warrant to force their way inside the room when this all happened - But the flooding caused safety concerns, so springs police forced their way into the room.

26-year-old Alexis Celona and 24-year-old Michael Muehlbauer had warrants out for them on drug charges.

Now in addition to their original warrants, they'll also be charged with criminal mischief.

The flooding was so bad, the fire department had to remove the toilet in that room and try to force some of the water into its drain to alleviate the flooding.

Colorado Springs Fire Department estimates the couple caused more than $100,000 in damages to the hotel.

Southampton Hospital this week opened the doors to is newest addition, the Audrey and Martin Gruss Heart and Stroke Center, which includes brand new, state-of-the-art equipment and is expected to provide help for people suffering from vascular diseases from across the East End.

For the past two years, a committee comprised of nurses, doctors ,and architects has met every week to fine-tune plans for the new center, which will make surgeries more efficient, reduce recovery time and allow the hospital to perform procedures it has never been able to do before.

Martin and I felt it was very important that our local hospital have the capability to conduct stroke and vascular distress intervention, Audrey Gruss said in a press release issued by the hospital.

Southampton Hospital is essential to all of us living in the East End, and we are honored to be part of its quest for excellence, she added.

The new center, which was designed by Victor Famulari Architect, PC, was created in what was mostly pre-existing space. The brick faade blends in with the rest of the hospitals exterior, but the inside of the new center looks more like an operating room from the future, than something one might expect in a small town hospital.

Im very excited. No, Im beyond excited, said Kathy Anderson, who has been an operating room nurse at the hospital for 24 years and sat on the planning committee for the new center.

Visitors to the center are met by a nurses station, new offices for nursing staff, and a centralized holding area for patients awaiting procedures. All the doors in the center open, not with a push or a pull, but with a simple wave of the hand, which will helpprevent the spread of germs and diseases.

Resurgence in auto industry driving demand for industrial land in London

    - April 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The citys industrial land is being gobbled up, so much so that new space may be added to meet demand.

Londons retail and office markets are stable. High-tech companies are scouring downtown to find space with exposed brick and beams.

In broad strokes, those are the trends outlined by commercial realty firm CBRE in its most recent outlook for the London market.

Sales in the industrial sector increased 50% in 2014 from the previous year, said Peter Whatmore, executive managing director of CBRE in London.

We have sold millions of feet in the last 18 months. There is a solid market recovery... New construction and building will be happening here.

Here is a snapshot look at the industrial, retail and office markets in London:

    INDUSTRIAL

    NOTEWORTHY DEALS

The London industrial market is experiencing some real optimism. We have become a more balanced market of supply and demand. There is a shortage of quality industrial space which might lead to more design build and construction, said Larin Shouldice, CBRE salesperson.

London is positioned well on the industrial side. We have ample land, and London is looking to acquire and service more land. With ample industrial development we expect another year of stable, modest growth.
