A Saskatchewan roofing company and its supervisor have pleaded guilty to occupational health and safety charges after a workplace accident that left one person with a serious leg injury.
REGINA A Saskatchewan roofing company and its supervisor have pleaded guilty to occupational health and safety charges after a workplace accident that left one person with a serious leg injury.
The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety says Clark Roofing Regina Ltd. pleaded guilty last month to two counts under provincial legislation and was fined $7,000.
The charges included failing to ensure that workers use a fall protection system, and failing to ensure that all work was sufficiently and competently supervised.
Three other counts were stayed.
The ministry also says supervisor Harold Vincent pleaded guilty and was fined $2,100 for failing to ensure that employees under his direction comply with safety regulations.
A court in Regina heard that in July, 2012, a worker fell two storeys from a roof after his leg got caught in a hoist that was being lowered over the edge.

DaVinci Roofscapes, the color leader in the polymer roofing industry, has hit the big 5-0. With the introduction of its newest color, Smokey Gray, the company now offers 50 standard color options for its polymer slate and shake roofing products.
"From light shades of violet to bold terracotta and subtle gray tones, we're pleased to offer 50 different colors people can select for their roofs," says Ray Rosewall, president and CEO of DaVinci Roofscapes. "We're always encouraging people to focus on 'top down' color on the home to gain a cohesive exterior. We believe that choosing a roof color is a process that reflects the personality of the homeowner along with the overall look of the home's exterior and style.
"By offering 50 different colors and a variety of color blends, we're proud to offer unlimited possibilities to satisfy the roofing color needs of homeowners, builders and roofers across America."
Started in 1999, DaVinci Roofscapes manufactures one hundred percent of its products in Kansas. The company's slate and shake composite roofing products resist impact, fire, algae and mold, and are backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

DaVinci makes this possible by offering a multitude of standard colors with subtle shade tones plus the opportunity for homeowners to create their own custom roof color if they desire. That ability to be completely in control of one's color choices empowers people."

Kenneth Allen BirdKent County Jail
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - A roofing contractor has admitted he took down payments but never finished the work, leaving a number of people with leaky roofs and lower bank account balances.
Kenneth Allen Bird pleaded guilty to defrauding an East Grand Rapids couple of $6,125 for a $12, 250 roofing job he never completed at the home of Christopher and Beth Chappus.
The Chappus' check was cashed in June and Bird was supposed to start the work in July, but it never happened, according to court records.

In a police interview Oct. 15, Bird allegedly said he was unable to do the work because customers failed to pay him. He said he hoped to complete the work or refund the money he received to avoid the criminal charges.
But Bird entered his guilty plea Monday, Feb. 2, before Kent County Circuit Court Judge George Buth.
As part of the plea, the Kent County Prosecutor's Office said it will forego some additional charges as long as Bird agrees to repay victims countywide who say they have been jilted out of as much as $9,000 each.
The plea agreement leaves open the final amount of restitution that will be calculated prior to Bird's sentencing date on March 18, giving time for more potential victims to come forward.
Bird's sentencing guidelines have him looking at a potential maximum sentence of three years in prison, but the desire of the victims to see restitution may mean Judge Buth will keep the sentence to a minimum so Bird can earn money to make amends.

Gregor Chisholm breaks down some of the options the Blue Jays have to close out games in 2015, including Brett Cecil and Aaron Loup
The same can't necessarily be said for the bullpen, which remains a work in progress. Anthopoulos on Thursday once again stated that he remains open to the idea of adding another player or two either through free agency or trade.
"Second base, I don't expect anything to change between now and the time camp starts," Anthopoulos told reporters prior to the Blue Jays' State of the Franchise event. "We had some things we worked on, we just couldn't get close. The bullpen, those are still open, both in trade and free agency."
With fewer than three weeks until the start of Spring Training, there aren't a lot of relievers available on the open market, but a handful of guys could become fits at the right price. Veteran relievers Rafael Soriano, Francisco Rodriguez, Phil Coke and Joba Chamberlain are a few of the notable players still looking for work.
Soriano and Rodriguez, in particular, have experience closing out games, and while the Blue Jays have a vacancy at the back end of the 'pen, that doesn't necessarily mean they're still in the market for a closer. Anthopoulos and manager John Gibbons expressed confidence that left-hander Brett Cecil or rookie Aaron Sanchez would be able to handle the role.
That could leave the club looking for someone to pitch in the middle innings while prospect Daniel Norris and right-hander Marco Estrada compete for the final spot in the starting rotation.
"Cecil is a guy that we think can certainly close," Anthopoulos said. "I don't have any doubts about him being able to do it. The question becomes, are we stronger with him in the ninth, or would we be stronger with Gibby being able to bring him in during the eighth, with a man on third and one out, trying to get the big swing and miss vs. a left-hander.
"[Cecil and Sanchez] can certainly do it, we have all the confidence in the world that they can. Are we the strongest bullpen that we can be -- and team -- with them in the those roles? That's why Spring Training will be important."
