LEED stands for green building leadership. LEED is transforming the way we think about how buildings and communities are designed, constructed, maintained and operated across the globe.
LEED certified buildings save money and resources and have a positive impact on the health of occupants, while promoting renewable, clean energy.
LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification. Prerequisites and credits differ for each rating system, and teams choose the best fit for their project.
Each rating system groups requirements that address the unique needs of building and project types on their path towards LEED certification. Once a project team chooses a rating system, theyll use the appropriate credits to guide design and operational decisions.
There are five rating systems that address multiple project types:
Within each of the credit categories, there are specific prerequisites projects must satisfy and a variety of credits projects can pursue to earn points. The number of points the project earns determines its level of LEED certification.
requirements, while not a credit category, promote reaching across disciplines to incorporate diverse team members during the pre-design period.
credits reward projects within relatively dense areas, near diverse uses, with access to a variety of transportation options, or on sites with development constraints.
credits encourage using sustainable building materials and reducing waste. Indoor environmental quality credits promote better indoor air quality and access to daylight and views.
credits promote smarter use of water, inside and out, to reduce potable water consumption.

LIBERTY TWP.
The planned opening this fall of the $350 million Liberty Center will see construction on more than 1 million-square-feet of retail and dining, residential and office space completed and leased.
But thats only the projects first phase.
Future phases of construction at the Liberty Twp. site could more than double the floor space thats now under construction, according to executives for the projects developer Steiner + Associates of Columbus.
The site is really planned for future growth, Beau Arnason, executive vice president in charge of asset management for Steiner, said.
Liberty Center is the name of the mixed use mega complex being built in Butler Countys Liberty Twp. Construction first started last year. Three anchor tenants Dillards department store, dinner-and-movie theater CineBistro and Dicks Sporting Goods have been announced along with AC Hotels by Marriott.
Estimates are for Liberty Centers retailers, restaurants and other businesses to create approximately 3,500 new jobs in Butler County by 2018, according to Liberty Twp. Economic Development Director Caroline McKinney.
Additionally, Liberty Twp. Trustees Tom Farrell and David Kern said the centers opening will double the number of businesses operating in this fast-growing northern Cincinnati township from approximately 250 to 500 in one fell swoop.
While the first phase encompasses approximately 65 acres, Steiner owns another 35 acres of land for future expansion at the site, located at the crossroads of Liberty Way, Ohio 129 and Interstate 75 in eastern Butler County. In total, Steiner has local government planning approval to build over 2.5 million-square-feet, Justin Leyda, senior development executive for Steiner, said.
Yaromir Steiner, founder and chief executive officer of Steiner + Associates, has previously told Journal-News that the first phase of Liberty Center is already being built bigger than the companys prior developments were when they opened, including The Greene Town Center in Beavercreek and Easton Town Center in the Columbus area. Hes referred to Liberty Center as Steiners town center version 2.0.

Julie Gaines and David Lenovitz share a passion for old restaurant ware. Together they would scour the basements of restaurant suppliers in New York Citys Bowery district for odds and ends or discontinued items.
Eventually their collection so overran their Gramercy Park home that Julie would have to travel to her mothers apartment on the upper East Side to take a shower. Thats when the couple decided it was time to open a store and turn their collecting into commerce.
That was 28 years ago, and their store Fishs Eddy is still going strong at 889 N. Broadway. Its one of a handful of independent retailers sprinkled among the outposts of Americas biggest home furnishings chains in New Yorks Flatiron District.
The area, named for the iconic triangular Flatiron Building bounded by Broadway, East 22nd Street and Fifth Avenue, is a mecca for seekers of high-style home decor. Its blocks are lined with eye-catching window displays of everything from cutting-edge design to the old comforts of home in greater quantity than youll find virtually anywhere else.
Another area of Manhattan to explore decor is the East Village, southeast of the Flatiron District and just as accessible. Its leafier streets and quirky offerings make for more pleasant strolling, but the concentration of stores is lighter, so if hitting a lot of shops in one day is your goal, go to the Flatiron first.
If you arrive by subway, the N and R lines stop at 23rd Street. When you reach the sidewalk, just head south.
One block down, at 935 N. Broadway, youll find a large Restoration Hardware, with plenty of rooms to browse through, furnished like the movie set of a castle with huge chandeliers, aged-leather sofas and distressed-wood everything.
Right next door is Whisk, a local purveyor of kitchen wares with just one sister store (in Brooklyn). I found a $15 blue-glass milk bottle to use for carbonated water and a $12 ceramic version of those pre-Starbucks paper coffee cups the Law & Order cops were always carrying (impractical because it gets very hot, but pretty!).
In the next block youll find Safavieh and Design Within Reach, two retailers familiar to fans of shelter magazines, the first very upscale and the second with more affordable prices.
On the corner of Broadway and E. 19th is Fishs Eddy, the delightful tableware shop born of a couples overflowing apartment.

ST. LOUIS -- Though fan voting won't commence until next month, the Cards used Saturday's Winter Warm-Up platform to announce the eight modern-era candidates eligible for induction into the Cardinals Hall of Fame this summer.
Six of those candidates -- Ted Simmons, Bob Forsch, Mark McGwire, Joe Torre, Matt Morris and Keith Hernandez -- return to the ballot for a second year. The two new additions are Steve Carlton and Edgar Renteria, eligible for the first time now that he has been retired from baseball for at least three years. The other criteria for inclusion on this ballot was spending at least three seasons in a Cardinals uniform.
The ballot was assembled by a Red Ribbon Committee made up of media members and Hall of Fame managers Tony La Russa, Whitey Herzog and Red Schoendienst. The committee also debated the credentials of several worthy veteran candidates -- defined as players who have been retired at least 40 years and who played at least three seasons with the organization -- and through a secret balloting process selected one veteran player to be included in that 2015 induction class.
The winner of that vote, as well as the top two votegetters on the modern-era ballot, will be announced in late April. At that time, the Cardinals will also reveal the pick for a fourth non-player inductee, which can be anyone who made longstanding contributions to the organization.
The voting period for the modern ballot will open in late February, with the ballot to be hosted on MLB.com. Fans will be permitted to vote up to 25 times during the weeks-long voting window. The induction ceremony will take place on Aug. 15, at which time four new plaques will be added to the 26 already displayed in the Cardinals Hall of Fame wing inside Ballpark Village.
