10-man team nab dozens of rats in Bukit Batok operation

    - December 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SINGAPORE - Bystanders gawked as more than 10 men from Star Pest Control spread out on the grassy slope beside the station on Thursday with orange nets, sticks, ropes and safety harnesses.

The operation? To nab rats that have been running wild in the area beside Bukit Batok MRT station, The Straits Times reported.

However, according to Shin Min Daily News, a total of 22 men were deployed to the area, armed with rat traps and poison.

In a video uploaded on YouTube, pest busters are seen picking up what looked like dead rats from the side of the hill. In another video, the men lay in wait as rats scurried around them.

A Facebook user, 33-year-old Ryan Keith Smith, had posted a video and pictures on Tuesday that showed dozens of rats scurrying around on the slope. He had also emailed authorities and MPs to request for action to be taken.

One mans rat race: Adventures of a Vancouver Island rat-catcher

    - December 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

VICTORIA - Christmas is almost here. And at Chez Chamberlain, our seasonal surprise came disconcertingly early.

It wasnt the traditional box of Turtles or Laphroaig single malt. No, it was the pitter-patter of tiny feet coming from the ceiling.

Which means the rats are back.

This is depressing, as wed been rat-free for a dozen years. So we called Kevin Davie of Pest Tech, the pest-control technician who had solved our previous problem. Davie not only sets traps, he possesses the uncanny ability to find the entryways of rats into houses, which he seals.

After meeting him, my wife told me Davie plans to write a book about his pest-control adventures. It occurred to me that this man a 51-year-old with three decades in the field must be chock-full of tales of the ratty variety.

He was. And as a special treat, dear reader, Ill share a few.

A few Christmases back, Davie had come off a serious rat-killing jag. Hed eliminated a record 66 rats in the same house over three weeks. These bodies as well as other rat corpses were inside an enormous bag in the back of his van.

The problem was, one cant just deposit a Santa-sized sack o rats at the dump. The dump people dont like that. So Davie was pleased when friends offered their Metchosin property for this very purpose. They overlook a cliff thats covered in brambles. The perfect spot.

He arrived with his giant bag of rats and a long-handled reacher.

Commercial painting: more than just pretty walls

    - December 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If you are a commercial property owner, investor, or manager, you tend to have a lot on your plate when it comes to maintenance. Certainly, you want your building or complex to look its best, but at the same time, it is essential to keep in mind the bottom line. Functionality and productivity are just as important as appearance, sometimes more so. In addition, any refurbishing needs to be done with minimal disruption to your business or tenants. A good commercial painting contractor will help you achieve your goals. Beyond a fresh new appearance and an appealing color scheme, experienced commercial painters can provide a whole range of related services, together with the smallest possible amount of down time and inconvenience.

    Image

Whether your aim is to convey a particular image or establish a distinctive brand, you want your office, mall, plant, school, religious institution, or other commercial property to look welcoming to visitors. With a neat, attractive physical appearance, you will create a good first impression and foster a sense of confidence in your business. A painting firm which is experienced in commercial work will be qualified to give advice on current color trends in your field (for instance, the hotel industry) and how to use color to create an appropriate mood -- soothing blue for a spa, energetic yellow in a factory, or lively red in a restaurant are a few examples. They will use digital color imaging to give you a clear idea of how different hues would look in the context of your setting.

Type of Paint and Related Products

Find a contractor who uses high quality paint, for a good-looking, hardwearing job. Well chosen and applied, commercial paint ought to be able to stand up to five years of heavy use. Your painter should be equipped to advise you about such important topics as the best products for various surfaces (including wood, drywall, concrete, metals, and others), wall and floor solutions for high-traffic areas, and exterior sealants that will increase resistance to severe weather conditions like heavy storms or harsh sunlight. For interiors, low-odor paint will allow redecoration to take place with minimal disturbance to employees and clients, while anti-mold paint and products with low or, even better, no VOCs will safeguard their health.

    Preparation

A good commercial paint job begins with proper preparation. Look for a professional painting contractor who will perform a thorough cleanup of the surfaces to be treated, including pressure washing of the exterior, and take care of existing problems such as chipping or peeling paint, water damage, mold, graffiti, rust, damage to the substrate, or concrete spalling. Inside the building, other types of repair may be necessary -- repair or replacement of drywall; patching of nail holes, cracks, dents, and gouges; and retexturing of acoustic ceilings.

    Customer Service

Discuss with commercial painters how they will proceed with their work while causing the least interruption to normal business or inconvenience to your clients and employees. An especially service-oriented contractor may offer you flexible scheduling -- that is, working during your off-hours or slow season so that your business can continue to function relatively normally. Consider, also, the safety measures they plan to put in place to protect occupants of the building as well as its equipment and furnishings.

In viral ad, police see darker signs

    - December 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

AUSTIN -- To bloggers statewide, it looked like hilarious clickbait: A person claiming to be an oil field worker posted an advertisement on Craigslist seeking a "homeless girl" as a roommate. She could live rent-free, the ad said, in exchange for cooking, cleaning and "bedroom fun."

To investigators faced with a wave of sex trafficking, though, it looked more like a potential lead. Jason Lewis, a spokesman for the police department in Lubbock, said detectives are "aware of the post and have multiple investigations in progress."

In the end, the ad could turn out to be little more than a prank. The person who placed it anonymously through an encrypted email address did not respond to interview requests.

But as Texas law enforcement agencies grapple with organized gangs operating compulsory prostitution rings with sophisticated online operations, experts say the story of the "Homeless female wanted" ad reveals the dangers of a poorly understood criminal phenomenon. Traffickers target young women, particularly runaways, who have little recourse when false promises of romance or shelter turn to sexual servitude.

The ad "does seem like a tactic that a pimp or trafficker would use to lure young vulnerable women," said Claudia San Miguel, director of the Criminal Justice Program at Texas A&M International University in Laredo. "In fact, based on my research, homelessness is one of the key factors that makes young women prime targets for prostitution and/or trafficking."

On Nov. 11, the ad appeared in the housing section of Craigslist in Lubbock, a city on the northern end of the booming oil fields of the Permian Basin, where countless workers live in the temporary accommodations known as man camps. The advertiser attached four photographs, showing a neatly furnished living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. No person appeared in the images.

"I work in the oil field (mid 20s) and have no time to date so I'm looking for a homeless girl that wants a place to stay," the ad said. Promising a comfortable bed and bubble baths, it expressed a preference for women drug-free and under 25. Making a vulgar reference to oral sex, the advertiser added, "I have a high sex drive and love to cuddle."

On Nov. 29, the ad appeared again in the same forum, with the title altered from "Homeless female apply" to "Homeless female wanted." The new version subbed in different photographs of a living room and bedroom. In the bedroom photo, the image of a man in a white shirt was visible in a mirror.

Craigslist, which maintains separate web sites for scores of cities, typically displays both local and "nearby" search results for its classified ads, so "Homeless female wanted" appeared on screens across West Texas.

Along with a similar advertising site, Backpage, Craigslist has weathered scrutiny for its role in facilitating prostitution and other crimes. Four years ago, the company shut down its adult services forum. It has fought in court to establish immunity from liability for the words and actions of its users, but the full extent of its legal responsibility remains unresolved.

Military Vets Rate MaidPro Among Top 100 Franchising Opportunities

    - December 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Boston, Ma (PRWEB) December 19, 2014

MaidPro cleaning franchise has, once again, been named in Franchise Business Reviews special Veterans & Franchising Report, which lists the 100 best franchise opportunities for military veterans based on comprehensive satisfaction scores among franchise business owners with military service in their past experience.

The FBR report reflects the 100 franchise companies earning the highest overall ranks based on input on satisfaction across a broad variety of measures from more than 3,500 military veteran franchisees across some 350 leading franchise companies. One of the best ways to know if a franchise opportunity is really as good as it appears is to look at its third-party franchisee satisfaction data, says FBR Editorial Director Molly Rowe. [Ours] is the only report in the industry that highlights the best franchises for vets based on actual franchisee feedback.

FBR notes that, according to data from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), military veterans are 45 percent more likely to take the plunge into entrepreneurship compared to people with no active military duty experience. But, while hundreds of franchisors offer incentives and discounts to veterans, FBR warns that, Not all are a good fit for vets, and urges all to conduct thorough due diligence including research into the overall satisfaction of existing franchise owners, prior to signing any long-term agreements.

An interesting statistic in this years Veterans & Franchising report, observes MaidPro VP of Planning and Development Chuck Lynch, is that military veterans are most satisfied with their franchise brands in three areas: marketing and promotional programs, effective use of technology and training and support programs. These are all areas where MaidPro cleaning franchise focuses a great deal of R& D and investment. Our repeat placements in FBRs Top 100 franchises for veterans list helps to validate that those investments are paying off and that we truly excel and differentiate ourselves from other franchisors in these areas. Military veterans typically come to the table with many but not all - of the skills they need to be successful as independent business owner/operators. We are happy to be complementing our veterans skills sets in so many positive ways and to make it easy and attractive for military veterans to join our MaidPro family.

Valued at some $15,000, MaidPros special offer for veteran franchising candidates is designed for affordability. The package includes:
