Indianapolis Museum of Art Receives $1 Million Grant from The Efroymson Family Fund to Support Innovative New …

    - November 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Indianapolis, IN (PRWEB) November 24, 2014

The Indianapolis Museum of Art is excited to announce the inventive new ARTx series, made possible with a $1 million gift from The Efroymson Family Fund, a fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF).

The ARTx series was developed by the IMAs first-ever curator of audience experiences and performance, Scott Stulen, and offers smart, dynamic and highly interactive experiences for audiences on the IMA campus and within the local community. The robust lineup features new public programming and community initiatives, along with enhancements to existing campus programs and events. New offerings such as Art X Fit, Grown-up Summer Camp and Avant Brunch continue to strengthen the IMAs reputation for quality experiences and intellectual rigor, while creating playful and unexpected points of access for a variety of audiences.

Through the series, Stulen hopes to reinvent perceptions of what to expect at an art museum and transform the IMA into a vibrant community hub.

Museums are at a crossroads, and forward thinking institutions must change how they attract, engage and interact with audiences, said Stulen. The ARTx series is an aggressive response to this challenge by creating smart, fun and highly participatory programming to activate the entire IMA campus and reach a diverse demographic of visitors. If successful, ARTx will not only become a leading model for how to create and deploy innovative audience experiences, but also alter how public programs support the mission of a museum.

The series will focus on five categories: art education, connecting to the community, family programs and young learners, unique experiences and special events, and supporting local artists. The series is aligned with the IMAs focus on visitor experience and community engagement.

The ARTx series is a continuation of our effort to leverage all of the features of the IMA campus, said Dr. Charles L. Venable, Melvin & Bren Simon Director and CEO. The new programming is welcoming and fun. It makes the IMA accessible to a wider audience and transforms the institution into a lively, exciting destination that embraces all that Indianapolis has to offer. Thanks to the generosity of The Efroymson Family Fund, were able to provide these dynamic new experiences to our visitors and create new connections with the local community.

The Efroymson Family Fund has had a long relationship with the IMA. The Efroymson Contemporary Art Fund, an endowed fund at the IMA, was established in 2006 by the Efroymson Family Fund to support work by emerging and established local, national and international contemporary visual artists through a rotating installation program in the IMAs Efroymson Family Entrance Pavilion. The newest gift to the institution, the $1 million programming grant, will fund the ARTx series through July 2018.

The new ARTx series focuses on accessibility and building connections, with programs and initiatives that support a visitor-centered experience. Since joining the Museum this past spring, Stulen has worked to diversify program options for visitors coming to the IMA campus.

Upcoming ARTx programming scheduled through 2015 includes:

Improved Floor Heating System Invented by InventHelp Client (BMA-4293)

    - November 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) November 24, 2014

Have you longed for the luxury of heated flooring but resisted the urge because of the cost? Well, thanks to an inventor from West Warwick, R.I., there is now a less expensive option.

His idea, Radiant Cement Board, puts the warmth and comfort of heated floors right at your feet by providing an efficient way to heat flooring in cold weather. Furthermore, it saves installation time and effort over conventional procedures by eliminating several labor-intensive steps. Besides proving a new cost-effective alternative to more expensive installation methods, it also helps lower heating bills. Another advantage is that its simple design minimizes production costs. In addition, it is ideal for both residential and commercial use. A prototype is available.

The inventor's work experience in the floor-covering industry inspired the idea. "I recognized the need for a faster and more economical way to install heat in floors," he said. "This accessory will make the job easier for professional installers as well as individuals who prefer to do it themselves."

The original design was submitted to the Boston office of InventHelp. It is currently available for licensing or sale to manufacturers or marketers. No one home when fire guts house

By CHARLES WHISENANT Friday, November 21, 2014 5:10 PM CST

    The Arab Tribune

A fire on Feemster Gap Wednesday completely destroyed a house. The residents had moved out of the house while remodeling it, according to Arab Fire Chief Ricky Phillips.

No cause had been determined as of press time.

Phillips said it may be a few days before investigators can get in to check it because of hot spots and flare ups.

The call went out to firefighters about 4 p.m. Arab, along with volunteer firefighters from Four-C and Georgia Mountain battled the blaze for about six hours.

It was about half involved when we arrived, Phillips said. There have been several additions to the house, which made it difficult to get to some places in the roof. By the time we arrived the fire was already in the attic.

Another problem, Phillips said, is that there wasnt a fire hydrant close by.

NCARB Survey Reveals Growth in the Architecture Profession

    - November 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The number of licensed architects in the United States has risen to 107,581, a 1.6 percent jump from 2013, and a 3.1 percent rise from 2011, according to the 2014 Survey of Architectural Registration Boardsconducted by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).

The NCARB annual survey includes the number of architects and reciprocal registrations from July 2013 to June 2014 in 54 U.S. jurisdictions, including the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. California currently has the highest total number of architects at 16,618 and registrations at 20,595, with New York close behind with 9,872 architects and 16,809 registrations.

Our survey documents an architecture profession that is thriving, says Michael J. Armstrong, CEO of NCARB in a release. NCARB will continue to spearhead changes in architectural licensing standards to support a growing architecture industry.

Although there is an increase in the number of licensed architects, the national total of architects that hold reciprocal licenses is 119,200, down 2 percent from 2013.

Southern Oregon ditches pool; swim club unhappy

    - November 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ASHLAND, Ore. (AP) - A massive $29 million remodeling of Southern Oregon Universitys McNeal Pavilion will dramatically change the schools athletic complex. Some of that change will come from subtraction, as the architects current model eliminates the universitys pool.

The pool is not going to make it. Its not in the current program, said Drew Gilliland, SOUs director of facilities, planning, management and sustainability.

A concrete masonry and steel structure, McNeal was completed in its original form in 1957 before remodels and additions in 1966 and 1991 led to the current 120,000-square-foot facility. Now 57 years old, the mixed-use building is due to be replaced, minus the pool, with work scheduled to start next summer.

The pool was deemed not worth rebuilding or replacing, said Gilliland, because it was in bad shape and in a poor location with regard to a new Student Recreation Center that is part of the project. He also noted that SOU has no swim team and the pool is mostly used by high schools.

The decision to leave a pool out of the plans did not sit well with Cynthia Moscaritolo of the Rogue Valley Masters, a community-based swim team based in Ashland.

Moscaritolo said most of the student body does not know of the schools plans to scrap the pool. She believes it will be a big loss for the community.

It seems like the powers that be at SOU are trying hard to get rid of the pool because they dont want the hassle of maintaining it anymore, she said.

But Ryan Brown, SOUs head of community and media relations, said the decision came at least in part from direction provided by university students.

A large portion of the funding for that project is coming from student fees, and the student government through a survey asked about the pool, Brown said in an email. It doesnt get used enough, and the result of that survey was not to include the pool in the funding for the new project. A majority of the students did not favor funding the pool.

An assessment of McNeal conducted in 2008 recommended major repairs and maintenance to the entire McNeal Pavilion building, noting that the greatest concerns were fire and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) deficiencies. Another investigation in 2013 by ZCS Engineering concluded that there was corrosion in the steel columns and reinforcement embedded in the concrete walls. A second opinion confirmed the original assessment.

Construction begins on One Daytona retail project

    - November 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) - Construction crews have begun demolition work for One Daytona, the biggest retail project ever done in Volusia County. Scott Bullock is overseeing the construction for International Speedway Corp. and had a twinkle in his eye watching the work.

"It's been a vision project for ISC over the past 10 or so years, so it's nice to see today finally happening."

The vision calls for more than 200 million dollars in spending to convert the large property behind and around ISC headquarters into the newest, hottest place to go in Daytona. Scott Bullock says the object is to draw more than just tourists.

"It's really creating a regional destination here in Daytona Beach that is a year round destination that offers play, stay, work, live environment. A true mixed use community."

The company is planning a boutique hotel, retail anchored by Bass Pro Shops and a full service movie theater, office space and restaurants. Bullock says more retailers and the national hotel proprietor will be announced during construction.

"This has been an underserved market. We are hoping this project brings a lot of national brands that people are familiar with, that they are excited about having, and will compliment what's already here."

The first piece of construction called Victory Circle will be open by 2016. It will take years beyond that to finish the entire complex.

Sandy unveils The Cairns, a new transit-oriented, mixed-use development

    - November 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sandy Mayor Tom Dolan, second from right, shakes hands with Vice President Gary Karl of Pacific Retail during the ribbon cutting for the opening of Monroe Street and the groundbreaking of a high-rise residential building in Sandy, Monday, Nov. 24, 2014.

    Ravell Call, Deseret News

SANDY After years of planning, Sandy city officials kicked off construction for a new development where they hope people will enjoy living, working and playing.

The development is called The Cairns. A cairn is a man-made pile of stones indicating someone is headed in the right direction, city officials said.

Developers say the 1,100-acre project from 9000 South to 11400 South and I-15 to near State Street will connect mountain adventures with urban living.

The Cairns will feature thousands of new apartments and condominiums, dozens of restaurants, office space, new retail space and a multimillion dollar South Towne Center shopping mall renovation.

We spent probably close to $2 million on this planning process over the last 3 years to get it right, Sandy Mayor Tom Dolan said. We have to get it right because it is the future of our community.

On Monday, city officials broke ground on The Prestige, a 25-story residential high-rise on the northwest corner of Centennial Parkway and Sego Lily Drive (10000 South). Dolan said density is a necessity.

We can no longer spread out and sprawl, the mayor said. We have to go up. Thats not just Sandy city, but thats the entire Wasatch Front, as we have more and more land thats chewed up and very little land left.

The Cairns also has The East Village, which will become the states largest transit-oriented development, city officials said.

Defense Secretary Hagel resigning from Obama cabinet

    - November 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In this Oct. 1, 2014 file photo, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel briefs reporters at the Pentagon.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is stepping down under pressure from President Barack Obama's Cabinet, senior administration officials said Monday, following a tenure in which he has struggled to break through the White House's insular foreign policy team.

Hagel is the first senior Obama adviser to leave the administration following the sweeping losses for Obama's party in the midterm elections. It also comes as the president's national security team has been battered by multiple foreign policy crises, include the rise of the Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.

While Obama has sought to consolidate foreign policy decision-making within the White House, advisers have privately criticized Hagel for not being more proactive and engaged in Cabinet meetings and other national security discussions. Hagel also angered White House officials with a recent letter to national security adviser Susan Rice in which he said Obama needed to articulate a clearer view on the administration's approach to dealing with Syrian President Bashar Assad.

A senior defense official said that Hagel submitted his resignation letter to Obama on Monday morning and the president accepted it. Hagel, 68, agreed to remain in office until his successor is confirmed by the Senate, the official said.

The official said both Hagel and Obama "determined that it was time for new leadership in the Pentagon," adding that they had been discussing the matter over a period of several weeks.

Obama was to announce Hagel's resignation Monday. The president is not expected to nominate a new Pentagon chief Monday, according to a second official.

The officials insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter by name ahead of Obama's official announcement.

Among the leading contenders to replace Hagel is Michele Flournoy, who served as the Pentagon's policy chief for the first three years of Obama's first term. Flournoy, who would be the first woman to head the Pentagon, is now chief executive officer of the Center for a New American Security, a think tank that she co-founded.

Hagel is a Republican who served as senator from Nebraska and became a critic of U.S. involvement in Iraq. After Obama nominated him to succeed Leon Panetta as Defense Secretary in his second term, Hagel struggled through a disastrous confirmation hearing that raised early concerns about him within the White House.

Mr Waldron, who is also sport and recreation minister, is holding a press conference about his future at 9am.

The 63-year-old is expected to move to the backbench but remain the member for Wagin.

Mr Waldron was elected to that role in 2001, the same year he was appointed deputy leader of the WA National Party.

Premier Colin Barnett recently told frontbenchers that they would have to take a back seat up to a year prior to the 2017 state election if they don't plan to run.

Deputy Premier and Health Minister Kim Hames has already announced he will retire from politics at the next state poll.

While there's speculation Police Minister Liza Harvey will become second-in-charge, Mr Barnett said on the weekend that Cabinet would discuss who would take on the position, and that he didn't have a preference for Dr Hames' replacement.

Mr Barnett plans to contest the 2017 election.
