Out with the balance ball chair and in with the plants.

So say Kathryn Wilking and Linda Varone, two feng shui practitioners who maintain that applying the traditional Chinese system to your work space can improve your finances, your career, and your well-being.

By doing some physical changes in your space, you can subtly shift energies in your life, said Varone, owner of Nurturing Spaces Feng Shui in Arlington.

People generally think of feng shui as a method for arranging furniture for optimal energy flow, said Wilking, who recently wrote a book on the subject, Practical Feng Shui for the Office. But the philosophy can be applied to a space as small as a desktop.

The most important step to improving your office energy is to place your desk in the proper spot, what Wilking calls command position. From your desk, she advises, you should have a clear view of the door and most of the room, creating a sense of control over your space.

When youre in command, you dont get as stressed out, you make sound decisions, you are more confident, Wilking said.

City orders W. Toledo apartments closed

    - November 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

An apartment complex in West Toledo is called Riviera Maia, apparently after the exotic Mexican resort area. All the apartment layouts have Mexican names, such as Acapulco and Playa.

But right now, about the only thing the two have in common is water. In the Toledo case, its leaking through the ceilings.

The city of Toledo last week ordered the closure of eight out of 63 buildings at the garden apartment complex, declaring them unfit and uninhabitable, after the owners, Kidz Real Estate Group LLC of Chicago, had voluntarily closed 19 buildings.

Toledo filed a lawsuit against the owners over the buildings one year ago, and recently obtained a court-ordered assessment of repair needs. Chris Zervos, director of the Department of Building Inspection, said the repairs will cost millions.

A recommended repair, he said, is installation of pitched roofs to better shed the rain.

Its beyond us why anyone would purposely allow their asset to be devalued, he said. We can make them make the improvements or tear down the nuisance. He said the city would like to work with the owners to restore the buildings because rental apartments are in demand in Toledo.

The buildings are basically in decent-enough shape. Theyre salvageable, Mr. Zervos said. He said the city started issuing repair orders in 2009 when inspectors learned that the owners had been making repairs without obtaining permits for inspection.

    No demolition at NNNP

    - November 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

THERE will be no demolition of illegal structures inside the North Negros Natural Park (NNNP) after the majority of the members of the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB), especially mayors and barangay officials, voted to maintain the status quo.

The controversial structures include vacation and rest houses standing on the protected zone.

Governor Alfredo Maraon Jr., who chaired the PAMB meeting Tuesday, voted for the demolition and became emotional in defending his stand for the dismantling of about 90 illegal structures.

The owners of these structures were issued cease and desist orders by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

We in government should not make illegal acts legal. The NNNP is the last frontier of our environment in Negros. We should protect it not only for ourselves but for the generations to come. Our forest was so vast before but it is slowly dwindling because of these illegal structures. Most of those having illegal structures like vacation houses have the money and yet they still would want to get the little that is left for the poor," Maraon said.

He added that he will make sure that the issue will be properly brought before Environment Secretary Ramon Paje.

Maraon said he is more concerned about the many who would be affected of the forest destruction rather than the few people who have the money and own vacation houses.

The PAMB members voted 34-11, with one abstention.

Most of those who voted for the demolition are members of the PAMB Technical Working Group (TWG) and representatives of non-government organizations.

The division of the house was based on Article 4 of the recommendation made by the TWG of PAMB that states, Illegal occupants are to vacate and illegal structures are to be demolished for PAMB approval in accordance with Articles 449, 450 and 451 of the Civil Code of the Republic Of the Philippines and Section 21 of Republic Act 7586 or the NIPAS Act, and Section 4A that states, Illegal structures outside of hazard zone shall be utilized for public use as maybe determined by the PAMB.

All Aboard Florida begins demolition for WPB station

    - November 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

It's demolition day Wednesday for All Aboard Florida as crews clear the way for construction of its West Palm Beach station.

Both the Sewell Hardware building and the Sasser Glass building will be razed for the station between Evernia and Datura streets, next to the Florida East Coast Railway tracks.

The work follows the knockdown of a strip center on the site of the future passenger rail line's Fort Lauderdale station two weeks ago.

It's full steam ahead for the project's first segment, which includes a station in downtown Miami. All three stations are expected to be completed a few months before passenger trains begin running between Miami and West Palm Beach by the end of 2016.

The next leg to Orlando is set to open in 2017.

The West Palm Beach station will be 60,000 square feet, with 30,000 square feet of air-conditioned space, about the same size as Fort Lauderdale's station.

The station and surrounding development are expected to help revitalize a ragged stretch of downtown between Clematis Street and City Place, an area officials often refer to as the "donut hole."

The design will complement stations in Fort Lauderdale and Miami, with lots of glass and elevated lounge above the tracks and signature V-shaped trusses.

All Aboard Florida will run 16 trains each way, each day, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m..The trains will use the existing FEC tracks from Miami to Cocoa and new tracks from Cocoa to Orlando along the Beach Line Expressway.
