Apprentice plumber awarded over 1m for car crash injuries

    - November 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Mr Justice Cross said: I believe Mr O Riordan has been injured and damaged just as signficiantly as someone who has lost the use of all their limbs.

An apprentice plumber whose nose split down the middle when the car in which he was a passenger was involved in a crash has been awarded over 1 million damages by the High Court.

As a result of psychiatric injuries, Freddie ORiordan is likely for the foreseeable future to be a shell of his former self, said Mr Justice Kevin Cross.

Awarding a total of 1.14 million, the judge said he believed Mr Riordan had been injured just as significantly as someone who lost the use of all their limbs. The judge granted a stay in the event of an appeal on the basis that there is an immediate payout of 600,000 to Mr ORiordan.

Mr ORiordan (26) of Rush, Co Dublin, had sued Bernard Dempsey of St Catherines Grove, Rush, and Kevin Byrne of St Catherines Drive, Rush, Co Dublin, as a result of the injuries caused in a crash on Loughshinny Hill, North Co Dublin, on July 11th, 2007.

Mr ORiordan was a back-seat passenger in a car driven by Mr Dempsey when the car was struck from behind by a car driven by Mr Byrne. Mr Justice Cross said the accident was frightening and significant and it resulted in the vehicle in which Mr ORiordan was passenger being shunted forward and spinning and rolling over a few times.

Mr O Riordans head hit the back window and, even though he was wearing a seatbelt, he was was thrown forward with his nose striking the car with such force that the windows steel frame was dented.

Mr O Riordans nose was split down the middle but the judge said it was very skilfully and expertly repaired by a plastic surgeon. Given the severity of the physical injury, Mr Justice Cross said the surgical recovery was remarkable.

The major injury sustained by Mr O Riordan, the judge said, was the psychological and psychiatric reaction after the crash and he is suffering from body dysmorphic disorder. He and also developed post traumatic stress disorder at one stage.

Mr Justice Cross accepted that from a very early stage Mr ORiordan was entirely dissatisfied with his physical appearance and he went on to develop a serious and significant psychiatric problem which has persisted and is persisting.

Ready, set, shop! Tips from area Black Friday diehards

    - November 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

We asked some local Black Friday super-shoppers for their 2014 strategies.

Take notes! These ladies are serious.

JULIE ZIAJA: Get it done, make it fun

Julie is the associate director of evening & graduate admissions at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach.

What are you looking for on Black Friday this year? Toys to donate, a Ninja blender or juicer, jewelry, electronics

What's BETTER than Black Friday? Shop online, use coupons and discounts, clearance items, make gifts.

What's your holiday shopping strategy? Start on Thanksgiving and mark the ads so I don't miss anything! Enjoy the shopping with family and friends and meet for coffee at 9 a.m. when we are done.

How do you keep it fun? Our family makes Black Friday a fun outing by going together, including the men. Last year we were in Charleston, South Carolina, visiting family so we all went in two cars to Walmart and then Target and Kohl's. We used our phones as walkie-talkies and had a blast cutting up in the stores, taking pictures in the Duck Dynasty camo chair and my husband put on a Walmart smock, directing people in line. Black Friday shopping has become a fun family event and we enjoy the time together and don't take it too seriously.

BONNIE WELSH: Shop like it's Fantasy Football

This Jupiter shopper says Black Friday shopping now has similar rules to 'fantasy football'." These are:

7 must know Christmas decoration tips

    By KSL Local

You already know theres no place like home for the holidays, but if that home is a little short on Christmas cheer, you may be cheating yourself and your family out of some yuletide glee.

If outdoor lighting isnt your specialty, dont fret a few quick tips will have you decking the halls (and the eaves, and the fence) like a pro in no time.

Holiday lighting doesnt have to be a monochromatic white, or even a traditional red and green. That said, you should spend some time considering your color scheme. Picking out colors is much like choosing an outfit for the day or paint colors for your home you want each to complement the others.

That said, light mixing can be tricky. According to Sheldon Lyons of Holiday Presence, a professional Christmas decor retailer, some color combinations may look good close up, but blur into one color from far away.

You can prevent this effect by alternating every three lights instead of every other. Additionally, the intensity of your lights will affect the appearance of your display. Some LED light colors can overpower others that naturally have lower levels of light output. For example, purple LEDs have a lower intensity output and can easily be overpowered by colors with a higher output, like green.

It may have made for some cinematic laughs, but Clark Griswold's home isnt likely your idea of tasteful holiday dcor. One way to give your display a naturally balanced look is to apply the tried-and-true rule of threes.

For instance, you may have 20 trees on your property, but only want to light half. Instead of lighting every other one, or a few random trunks, choose three clusters of three, interspersed throughout the property.

Turn away pests to regain control of pepper plants

    - November 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Question: My peppers look horrible with curling leaves and brown tips. What is the cause and what can I use that is natural to obtain control?

Answer: Growing good pepper plants has been difficult this fall due to an assortment of pests. Often mites, thrips and whiteflies can be feeding on the same plants. These cause the leaf curl plus tips of new growths to pucker and turn brown. A control is needed or the plants eventually decline. All of these pests can be controlled with a natural insecticidal soap or neem oil spray found at your local garden center. Follow label directions and make repeat sprays as needed which could be once a week until control is obtained.

Q: In my community we have 30-year-old oak trees that are dropping little, round, tan puffballs. We haven't seen these before and are wondering what they could be.

A: Those brown, furry balls dropping from oak tree leaves are kind of cute but may also be alarming to residents. Maybe the drop is heavier this year or the wasps that cause the leaves to produce the growths, called wooly galls, have just found the trees.

Wooly galls form on many types of oaks but are most prevalent on the laurel and live oaks found locally. Small wasps appear to lay their eggs in the leaves during spring and the galls gradually develop, being most noticeable in late summer or fall. Their presence on the leaves may encourage an early leaf drop and the galls often slough off individually to accumulate on the ground. They cause little or no damage and can be ignored. Control would be too difficult.

Q: Do you feel renting a machine and aerating a residential lawn would be helpful if I plan to over-seed with a combination of winter rye and bermudagrass seed?

A: A good raking to remove old grass blades and surface debris is probably a better treatment before over-seeding with a winter grass than aerating that punches holes in the ground. If your soil is compacted, has nematodes or is hard to wet then aeration may be considered as an additional treatment to help all the turf growing as your lawn.

Ryegrass is the traditional seed for establishing a temporary lawn. You can select either annual or perennial ryegrass. Both give a good green lawn for the cooler months and then decline during spring. Only add the bermudagrass seed if you want to establish a new permanent lawn type. Many residents consider bermudagrass a weed when growing with St. Augustine, bahia or zoysia lawns. It is best not to mix these grasses.

Q: Our Gold Mound duranta plants are being eaten by small, white insects. We used a disease control product with no effects. Do you have any advice?

A: Most likely your duranta planting is now free of leaf spots and similar blotches but those juice-sucking whiteflies are going to continue feeding unless you switch to an insecticide. Natural products like insecticidal soap or horticultural oils can control these pests but you have to hit the under side of the leaves which can be difficult with these dense-growing shrubs.

KUALA LUMPUR: The continuous land clearing activities in Cameron Highlands will probably cause the area to face bigger floods and landslides in the future, according to a geology expert.

Lecturer in Geology of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Assoc Prof Dr Tajul Anuar Jamaluddin said the greediness of settlers in clearing hilly areas to be turned into new vegetable farms would also cause soil degradation that could lead to landslides.

During heavy rains, the soil in the cleared hilly areas can erode and the existing dam is no longer capable of containing large quantity of water, and this situation will cause major floods, he told Bernama in response to the muddy floods in Cameron Highlands last Wednesday.

He said the soil in Cameron Highlands was no longer suitable for agricultural activities after the highland fell victim to uncontrolled land clearing activity.

They (settlers) cleared the land to open new vegetable farms because the existing land is no longer fertile due to the excessive use of chemical fertilisers.

This was done for profit, without even taking into consideration the risks of muddy floods and landslides that await the villagers, he said.

As such, Tajul Anuar called on the settlers to optimise the use of existing land by using organic fertilisers and good bacteria technology to re-fertilise the land.

He also called on the authority to take immediate action to stop land clearing activity and to close all illegal agriculture areas, which were mostly developed by foreign settlers.

Cameron Highlands is a national tourism icon noted for its beautiful landscape and cool weather. If the authorities do not do something about the land clearing activity, Cameron Highlands will slowly lose its visitors and eventually, its identity, he said.

In the 6.30pm incident last Wednesday, five people were killed, while five others were injured after their villages were hit by major floods when the water at the Sultan Abu Bakar Dam had to be released in stages following heavy downpours.
