Cullen Moser of New Bern said she was kind of shocked for being featured in the fall edition of Meredith Magazine.
Moser is one of four former alumni of Meredith College featured in the quarterly magazines new Wings Program section that commits to adult learning and symbolizes the power that every woman has to elevate herself.
I thought it was really cool, she said. I never really thought I would be someone they would choose to do an article on.
Yet, Moser said her job, designing interiors for Hatteras Yachts, is not something most people typically think of in the field of interior design.
Its a pretty cool job, she said.
Moser graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in advertising and marketing in 2002 but, after a year and half, she decided she did not want to do that kind of work. In 2004, she enrolled at Meredith College to get an interior design degree.
I was kind of concerned I would be one of the oldest people in the program, she said, but there were actually quite a few of us folks going back to school getting another degree. I didnt fully understand their adult education program. Some of the students ranged in age from 24 (Mosers age at the time) to their 70s who graduated, which I think is great.
Meredith College was extremely comfortable and the professors were accommodating to the adult students, Moser said.
I loved the classes, she said. They were the perfect size. I was going to Carolina where the classes had 300 or 400 students. With classes that size, you are just a number.
At Meredith, it was more intimate and more focused on students, Moser said.

ON THE CUSP: Hayley Anne-Brown has an impressive portfolio and growing client list, but taking the plunge into business is still a tough decision.
Dan Khan
When is it time to give up your day job? It's a quandary many entrepreneurs face, and Auckland interior designer Hayley-Anne Brown is standing at that crossroad.
The 30-year-old works 40 hours from Monday to Thursday as Manukau Institute of Technology's resident interior designer. Meanwhile, she is flat out running her interior design firm, Lou Brown Design, from Friday to Sunday.
While the day job has led to her single-handedly overseeing the colourful fit-out of the polytechnic's new campus, demand in her own business is growing so quickly that soon the time will come for her to go it alone.
"In the next six months to a year I will go fulltime [into my business]. I can work seven days and hold down two jobs for a while because I don't have kids but, at some point, I just need to go for it," Brown says.
"I don't have backup and I need to pay my bills so, to run this business, I have to have enough money coming in and a solid base of customers. I don't want to be fretting about cashflow and invoices - I want to hit the ground running."
Serial entrepreneur and startup mentor Dan Khan says it's particularly hard to make the leap into a fulltime business in a service-orientated profession such as interior design.
"It's often harder to make the shift with this type of firm because building the business takes time," he says.
"With a product-based business it takes a lot of tweaking before you can scale it up but it's a lot easier to do that on the side.

New gadgets
A growing number of companies are rolling out home automation products that tap into new capabilities of Bluetooth, giving them the potential to be cheaper and easier to set up and use than previous home-automation gadgets. Among the new gadgets
A touch-activated door lock. The deadbolt lock, from industry stalwart Kwikset, unlocks at the tap of a finger when it detects a Bluetooth signal coming from an owner's phone. Users can also configure it to recognize visitors' phones, such as those of a housekeeper or a nanny.
A smart home kit. Designed by Archos, a French company best known for its low-cost electronics devices, the kit includes a collection of security and automation products such as cameras, weather monitors and controllable wall plugs that all communicate with a specialized tablet over Bluetooth.
A remote-controlled light bulb. Designed by startup company Oort, the bulb allows users to turn it on or off or change its color using an app on a smartphone or tablet. It works similarly to Philips Hue light bulb, but for less than half the cost. And unlike the Hue, it doesn't require an extra device to communicate with it using your phone.
A wireless light switch. Designed by Avi-on, a startup company, the device allows users to place a new light switch wherever they'd like, without having to carve a new hole in their wall or extend their wiring. The switch, which is set to debut next spring, uses Bluetooth to send signals to power plugs and light bulbs that can turn the lights on or off or even dim them.
A remote-controlled wall plug. To be released early next year by San Francisco startup Zuli, the plug will allow users to dim their lights or turn on an appliance like a crock pot with their smartphones.

Can you imagine a day without the use of home appliances particularly for Filipinos in the urban areas?
The use of electrical machines has become so common that most of us are dependent on them because they make our lives more comfortable and daily chores easier to do.
These electrical appliances are widely used in homes, schools, offices, and business establishments. The relevance of their safety and performance is therefore high to ensure that consumers get their moneys worth.
In purchasing reliable and safe home appliances, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) advises consumers to check on proper labels, ensure that there is an instruction manual or installation guide included in the product, and always ask for an official receipt. Particularly for refrigerators and room air conditioners, the DTI urges consumers to scrutinize their energy labels that specify the appropriate Energy Efficiency Factor (EEF) and the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER).
The energy labels as a guide for consumer say that a higher EEF of a room air-conditioner means lower operating cost while a higher EER of a refrigerator means a lower electricity cost.
The DTI also enjoins consumers to read instructions for the proper use of products to avoid accidents such as fire and electrocution. Instruction/product manuals provide setup and installation information; warranty and servicing details; power requirements and energy information; included and optional accessories; parts list; product limitations; performance; special features; and recommended maintenance and troubleshooting. With this information, consumers can be guided on how to get the most out of any appliance; know how and what to do in case it malfunctions; and maintain an appliances optimum performance for the duration of its expected lifecycle.
Moreover, since product warranty provisions are included in the instruction/product manuals, consumers are able to know their rights in case the appliance sold to them turned out to be defective.
As one of the lead offices in empowering consumers based on the Republic Act 7394 or the Consumer Act of the Philippines, the DTI upholds the rights and responsibilities of consumers drawing on the vigilance and involvement of the buying population.
The second among the eight consumer rights is the right to safety, which says that a consumer shall be protected against the marketing of goods or the provision of services that are hazardous to life and health.
Through R. A. 4109 or the Standards Law, the DTIs Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS) requires manufacturers and importers of critical products under its list of Philippine National Standards (PNS) for mandatory certification to secure the Philippine Standard (PS) license or the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) certificate prior to distribution and sale in the market.

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - We found homes here in the valley, live streaming on the website.
Phoenix, Scottsdale residents had no idea their home security cameras were hacked.
We found live streams of people's bedrooms, living rooms, and playrooms, the inside of their home streaming online for everyone to see.
"The word is creepy... describes it as people that have nothing better to do than hack into people's home and post that online is somewhat disturbing," said Christ Matthews.
Tech expert Chris Matthews said sadly hacking happens all the time. 11,000 private security cameras from all over the country are streaming on this mystery website, and no one really knows who runs it.
Security experts say homes that were hacked were using the default password.
"Many cameras and devices in general, because they want you to be able to access the device for the first time, will have a default password," said Matthews.
Sometimes the default username and password is admin, or admin and 1234. Companies expect customers to change the default passwords, but lots of people don't
The website claims they stream home cameras to show the importance of security settings. Experts say the only way to make sure hackers don't access your home security cameras is to change the default password.
"Once it's out there, it's really out there, unless you change your password so they can no longer access your content," he said.

Q: My home to-do list is getting long and complicated. Which home projects are best left to professionals?
A: Now that winter is nearly upon us, there are many seasonal projects that require our attention around the house.
But throwing time and money at the problem will only go so far. The fact is there will be jobs and tasks that lie outside of your realm of expertise.
It is good to know your strengths. But when it comes to expensive, time-consuming home projects, its even better that you understand your weaknesses.
Rolling up your sleeves and attacking a project without the necessary qualifications can lead to disastrous results. The tiniest leak can sink the mightiest ship.
Before you start swinging a hammer, here are some home projects that you might want to seek extra help for if you are a novice.
Electrical
A houses electrical grid is its nerve center, and some projects call for more than just flipping a fuse switch.
Older houses can have worn or outdated wiring systems. What might have been an easy fix at the house you lived in five years ago wont necessarily work at your new place.
If you live in an older home, leave these projects to professionals who are familiar with past methods of electrical wiring.
