Premier Greg Selinger appears to have temporarily stamped out the fire that's been raging over his leadership.

His five dissident ministers have been silenced -- for now -- by their resignations from cabinet and their speedy replacement.

Selinger and his remaining supporters are soldiering on with the tasks of government, making spending and policy announcements. The Nov. 20 throne speech will, no doubt, be full of language that the NDP government means business.

In their view, they've got until April 2016 to right the ship, despite engine problems, leaks and a captain who saw a mutiny by what many once considered his closest crew mates.

Left unresolved is where five former high-ranking ministers -- Erin Selby, Andrew Swan, Stan Struthers, Theresa Oswald and Jennifer Howard -- will sit in the legislative assembly when the throne speech is presented. Will he remove them from the NDP caucus as he did with Christine Melnick, another discordant MLA? Will they suffer the indignity of sitting as independents on the other side of the floor, next to the Opposition Progressive Conservatives and the lone Liberal MLA? Will they be allowed by Selinger to run again in the next election to represent the NDP? Or do any of them have other plans, such as running as NDP candidates in the next federal election? Or retiring from politics altogether?

Whatever happens in the days ahead, it's also clear Selinger isn't completely safe. He may have pulled the knife from his back, but the wound is far from healed. And others, too, could soon unsheathe their own weapons.

Which way will Selinger go?

BEFORE: When an addition off the back of this walk-out basement created a larger family room, great effort went into hiding the new beam in the ceiling and the new columns in the walls where the old back wall of the house used to be. Identifying load-bearing walls is an important part of home remodeling. However, just because a wall is a structural wall doesnt mean it cant be removed if needed. Removing a load-bearing wall is not a design deal breaker.

We have discussed removing structural walls in this column before, but it is worth discussing again.

Removing a structural wall is not so difficult that avoiding this possibility should be the driving factor in the redesign of your home. The most important consideration is to determine how your family functions and how your home can be changed to support your lifestyle.

If a structural wall needs to come down to achieve your goals, then so be it.

Removing a load-bearing wall will require the services of a structural engineer. When a project requires structural changes, the municipal body that will issue the building permit will require stamped, signed drawings and calculations issued by a licensed structural engineer.

Before beginning to draw final drawings, we like to meet with the engineer at the home to consult on what the existing structural conditions probably are. At this stage, design professionals use their expertise and experience to make educated assumptions regarding the structural framing of the house. If the structure is not visible, a few test holes may be cut here and there which are helpful. However, it is not until the contractor actually tears into the project that the whole structural story may be known.

There are many ways to put a house together some much better than others so it is not shocking or upsetting if part of the solution has to be reconsidered. When you have created a great team with a competent, experienced architect, engineer and contractor, the adjustments can be quickly made, and you are on your way again. There is usually not a great financial impact to such a redesign. Keeping a 10 percent contingency fund will help in not being stressed by the adjustments that may happen along the way.

Removing load-bearing walls can be hard but worth the effort

If you want your homes cedar siding to live up to its reputation for longevity and decay resistance, make sure its treated or stained properly and checked periodically.

Left untreated, cedar shakes individual planks of one of several varieties of cedar will discolor and begin to soften, with a possibility of rot after about five years, depending on the climate.

There are several options for covering cedar siding, including stain, a clear treatment or paint.

A solid-color stain or paint tends to give cedar a more formal appearance, while a transparent stain or clear waterproofing treatment provides a more rustic look.

Stain is considered a more effective protectant for cedar, and it lasts longer than paint. A solid-color latex house stain offers the appearance of paint, but with less effort.

The cost for hiring a professional to paint or stain cedar siding can range from $2,500 to $4,000 or more, depending on your homes size and the labor required.

A stain or clear coating needs one or two finish coats, depending on the cedar-shake grade and whether youre applying a solid or semitransparent product. If you choose semitransparent, test an inconspicuous area to be sure the color is what you want.

Painting requires a base coat of exterior oil-based wood primer, followed by a latex-based exterior wood finish coat.

High-quality paint or stain, properly applied, should last five to seven years, and as many as 10, depending on weather conditions and if you maintain the siding. However, you may need to reapply a clear-coat stain every two years.

With a new installation of cedar shake siding which can cost around $5 a square foot you shouldnt need to do any prep work before staining or painting. In fact, you can pay extra for pre-primed or pre-stained shake products.

Cedar siding should be treated and regularly cleaned

SaskPower is investigating yet another fire involving a smart meter, this time at a home in east Regina.

The latest incident happened at a house in the 2400 block of Swayze Crescent early Friday morning.

Homeowner Joan Riemer said she was woken by the sound of loud bangs coming from the back wall of the house around 1:30 a.m.

I thought it was somebody hitting it with a bat, Riemer said. I looked out my bedroom and I saw flames, and then I knew what happened.

Riemer says she went outside and found that the smart meter had melted and the cover on a nearby barbecue was on fire. She pulled the burning barbecue away from the home and called 911.

No one was injured and the fire caused minor scorching to the cedar siding of the house.

Riemer was the only one in the home at the time, and she says its lucky she was there to call for help.

SaskPower replaced the melted meter with a traditional unit and restored power to the home about an hour later.

Spokesperson Tyler Hopson said it's concerning whenever there is a malfunction, and the company is working to remove smart meters as quickly as possible.
