    STRUTHERS

Struthers locals have noticed that a new business made its home at 11 Poland Ave.

The storefront had been vacant for more than a year. Ashlis Attic, a Struthers couples home-decor and refinishing business, moved into the location officially Monday, and both its owners reported theyve had walk-ins every day.

Ashli Zinkhon, co-owner of the shop, said she and Adam Reuss, her boyfriend and co-owner, have been working for about two months to clean the vacant storefront for their business. She said the shop has a completely different feel from when they started cleaning.

The last people who were in here closed in 2013, but they left it in a bit of a mess, Ruess said. Weve been busy trying to give

the place a rustic look so people feel comfortable when they come in.

Pasadena City Council approves design contract for old AT&T building

    - November 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

As far as old buildings go, the near-abandoned building dubbed the old AT&T building located near Pasadena City Hall has seen better days. The 47-year-old structure has been sitting empty for more than three years after the basement flooded during hurricane Ike. But renovation plans are moving forward to bring the building back to life.

On Tuesday (Nov. 4) the Pasadena City Council again took up the issue of repairing the building and using it to house the Fire Department, Code Enforcement, Municipal Court and Fire Marshal Departments.

What were looking at is total costs for remodeling the AT&T building of about $11 million. This does not include repairs to the parking garage behind the building, Councilmember Pat Van Houte said.

The City of Pasadena also owns another dilapidated building located at 901 Curtis, which was also damaged during Hurricane Ike. Engineers estimate a cost of roughly $11 million to tear down 901 Curtis and build a new building. Van Houte questioned why the same money was being spent to tear down and rebuild one building but not the other.

One way gets you a remodeled building and one way gets you a new building, she said.

The old AT&T building was donated to the city by Southwestern Bell in 2011 in exchange for real estate fees and closing costs of roughly $25,000.

During remodeling, a portion of the $11 million renovation budget will be spent to remove mold and remediate asbestos issues.

The building has a torn roof. The windows are broken. The flooding happened and the basement took on 10 feet of water. It has mold. It has asbestos, Councilmember Don Harrison said. It is my understanding the city itself condemned the garage. All this happened because of one event: Hurricane Ike.

Van Houte asked why thecouncil wasnt allowed input on the decision.

This was presented to council as Weve made a decision, vote for this one. This has never been something for council to discuss, the pros and cons, she said. Theres a problem with the way were making decisions and I am not convinced this is the best choice.

Uptown Charlotte construction is roaring back. Can demand keep up?

    - November 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Some 28 cranes towered over construction sites around uptown Charlotte in 2008, but they became a rare sight as the recession ground development to a halt.

Today, the cranes are rising again in the citys center.

A dozen or more projects are under construction or newly completed inside the Interstate 277 loop, as well as just outside it along Morehead Street and parts of Kings Drive.

Look toward the north end of uptown and youll see the nearly complete SkyHouse Uptown apartments rising 24 stories above North Tryon. Over by NASCAR Plaza, dirt is moving for a 10-story Embassy Suites hotel.

And bigger projects are in the works: Three real estate groups are angling to start construction next year on uptown office towers, vying to throw the first new one skyward since the recession.

But its the flurry of apartment construction that draws the most notice and questions of whether its too much for the citys population to sustain.

Real estate developers behind the construction wave say it isnt. Theyre placing increasingly large bets on the rebounding local job market and on demographic trends that are seeing more and more young urban professionals move to Charlotte.

Uptown Charlotte is one of the most desirable places to live in the Southeast, if not the country, said real estate developer Clay Grubb, part of the group behind the SkyHouse tower. The real question should be, why has it taken this long for construction to boom.

A growing number of real estate studies and experts back that up. Charlotte landed at No. 7 out of 75 U.S. real estate markets to watch in 2015, according to a new report from the Urban Land Institute a think tank focused on development and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The only cities faring better: the Texas boomtowns of Houston, Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth, along with San Francisco, Denver and Los Angeles.

    Transitional look in Dunwoody Colonial

    - November 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Coming from a townhome into a Colonial-style home, John and Renee Morehouse wanted to make the most of their extra space.

A formal dining room was unnecessary for now, so that spacious spot was turned into a playroom for their 2-year-old daughter. Unsure about how to use the formal living room, which was sitting vacant, they worked with designer Lauren Harris to create a TV-free gathering space. Now the stylish yet flexible space serves as a conversation area, with four chairs on casters, a round ottoman and storage cubes offering padded seating.

We wanted it to be area to sit before dinner or after dinner, Renee said.
