Mr. Appliance among Top 50 Franchises for Minorities

    - November 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

WACO, Texas (PRWEB) November 07, 2014

The WorldFranchising Network has compiled its 8th annual list of the 50 Top Franchises for Minorities. The results are in the Oct. 24, 2014 issue of USA TODAY in the Franchising Today section.

Mr. Appliance, a leading appliance service franchise, is among those listed.

The steady increase in minority representation in franchising over the last several years is very encouraging, said Rob Bond, founder and president of the World Franchising Network. Franchisors continue to make a concerted effort to reach out to minorities, which is ultimately highly beneficial in the long run to all parties involved.

The World Franchising Network selected 50 franchisors from hundreds of companies requesting evaluation for inclusion in the listing. Participants were required to answer a questionnaire that noted the number of operating units owned or managed by minorities, as well as the number of minorities in senior management.

There was no cost to participate in the survey. The only constraint was that franchisors had to have more than 40 operating units. Mr. Appliance to date has more than 160 locations in the U.S. in addition to locations in Canada, and has been franchising since 1996.

It is an honor to be among the Top 50 Franchises for minorities, said Doug Rogers, president of Mr. Appliance. This award reflects our dedication to our Code of Values and conducting business with respect and integrity.

Mr. Appliance is not only among Top Franchises for Minorities but for Veterans as well. In 2014, Mr. Appliance won five awards, with two of these awards centered on their franchise sales to Veterans.

Australia Construction Sector Growth Slows In October

    - November 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Australia's construction sector continued to expand in October, though at a slower rate, the latest survey from the Australian Industry Group, or AiG, revealed on Friday.

The AiG performance of construction index fell to 53.4 in October from the nine-year high of 59.1 in September.

This marked the fifth consecutive month of expansion. A reading above 50 signals expansion in the construction sector.

Among the sub-indices, new orders, construction activity and deliveries from suppliers increased at a slower rate in October.

Employment levels also rose for the fourth straight month, but at a slower rate.

Among the sub-sectors, House building and commercial construction advanced at a slower rate. Apartment building continued to increase at a solid rate and was unchanged from the previous month.

However, Engineering construction declined at a steeper rate in October.

Ontario to ban smoking on patios, playgrounds, sports fields

    - November 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

It will soon be illegal to smoke on patios, playgrounds and public sports fields in Ontario.

The provincial government said Friday it is enacting regulatory changes to make good on previously announced tobacco control measures. The changes take effect on Jan. 1.

The government will also ban cigarette sales on university and college campuses.

The Ontario Restaurant, Hotel and Motel Association warned that banning smoking on all bar and restaurant patios will deal a significant blow to many businesses.

This industry needs some support. This industry has been struggling now for many years. The last recession was not very kind to this industry, said Tony Elenis, president and CEO. This should have been kept only in public spaces, which we believe in, but not into the restaurant patios.

Mr. Elenis also argued that customers who wish to smoke will be forced to light up in nearby parking lots and on sidewalks, which could risk the health of passing children.

For its part, the Canadian Cancer Society applauded the measures, calling them courageous.

We think this is a great step towards protecting the health of Ontarians, said Rowena Pinto, vice-president of public affairs and strategic initiatives at the organizations Ontario division.

The provincial government first announced the measures a year ago, but its bill died because of the recent election. Instead of reintroducing proposed legislation, the province decided to enact some of the changes through regulation, said spokesman David Jensen.

However, the new regulations do not include a ban on all sales of candy- and fruit-flavoured tobacco products, which was part of last years announcement. Such a move would require new legislation. Mr. Jensen said the province intends to propose further changes in the coming months.

Ontario To Ban Smoking On Restaurant And Bar Patios, Playgrounds

TORONTO - Ontario will ban smoking on all restaurant and bar patios as well as at playgrounds and publicly owned sports fields starting Jan. 1, 2015, the Liberal government announced Friday.

Associate Health Minister Dipika Dameria said regulations will also be amended to ban the sale of tobacco on college and university campuses.

The changes to the Smoke Free Ontario Act will replace a patchwork of municipal regulations governing smoking on restaurant and bar patios, and will not hurt their businesses, she added.

"When we first introduced a ban on smoking inside restaurants and bars, there was a lot of concern raised that it would throw restaurants and bars out of business, but the evidence shows that did not happen," said Dameria.

"So we are very confident that there will be no adverse affects on restaurants and bars as we ban smoking on their patios.

The Progressive Conservatives support the changes but wonder why the Liberal government didn't do more to tackle the problem of contraband tobacco, which is often sold near colleges and universities at a fraction of the retail price.

"It doesn't address the fact that students can buy 200 cigarettes in a baggie for $8," said PC health critic Christine Elliott. "There's a lot more that needs to be done and I would really call on the government to start taking action on that front as well."

New Democrat France Gelinas fumed that the Liberals did not announce plans to reintroduce legislation that would extend a prohibition on sales of candy and fruit-flavoured tobacco products to youth to a total sales ban.

Province moves to ban smoking on patios, sale of cigarettes on college campuses

Smokers will have to butt out on patios and in parks across the province as the Liberal government plans to reintroduce anti-smoking legislation.

The new legislation, which will take effect on Jan. 1, also prohibits the sale of tobacco products on college and university campuses.

The Liberals introduced the bill to update the Smoke-Free Ontario Act last fall, but it died when the June 12 election was called.

The government says the bill will replace a patchwork of municipal regulations governing smoking on patios and around playgrounds.

Indeed, Toronto city council banned smoking on sports fields and in parks last fall.

The bill would also extend a prohibition on selling flavoured cigarillos and chewing tobacco to youth to a total sales ban.

Other flavoured products such as twist sticks, dissolvable strips and lozenges are also banned if they contain tobacco, but not if they have only nicotine without tobacco.

The Canadian Cancer Society has warned the lozenges, which look like candies and come in colourful packages, contain three times as much nicotine as a smoked cigarette.

The government said tobacco-related disease costs Ontarios health care system an estimated $2.2 billion in direct health care costs and an additional $5.3 billion in indirect costs such as lost productivity.

Ontario to ban smoking on restaurant patios, sports fields

Smokers in Ontario will have to butt out in more places including bar and restaurant patios, near playgrounds, sports fields and ice rinks starting January 1.

The changes announced Friday are intended to end what Associate Health Minister Dipika Damerla called a patchwork of municipal bans across the province and will also ban sales of tobacco on college and university campuses in a bid to curb smoking by impressionable young adults.

The timing of the ban will give restaurants, bars and their patrons who like to light up on patios time to get used to the idea before the outdoor dining and drinking season resumes in the spring.

It makes sense to do it now, Damerla told reporters as children played around her in the playground of a downtown daycare centre.

The restaurant industry said it had no warning of the patio ban and was not consulted but is not surprised it is taking effect in less than two months.

We realized society is going this way . . . well deal with it, said spokesman James Rilette of Restaurants Canada.

We think it can work as long as they dont get too heavy-handed in the early days, he added, referring to tickets that municipal inspectors who enforce the Smoke-Free Ontario Act could hand out to lawbreakers.

The new measures, part of regulatory changes to the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, will also ban smoking on playgrounds, public sports fields and similar surfaces such as ice rinks.

As well, it will be illegal to smoke within 20 metres of them to keep children and athletes clear of second-hand smoke.

Theres no such luck for patio diners, who will not enjoy a similar 20-metre exclusion zone, Damerla acknowledged. Nor will the province ban smoking in local parks as some municipalities have done.

    Smokers have lost another battle.

As of New Year's Day, it will be illegal to smoke on bar or restaurant patios, public playgrounds and sports fields. Sales of tobacco will also be prohibited anywhere on a college or university campus.

If we prevent youth from taking up smoking in the first place, that will mean fewer smokers and healthier Ontarians, Associate Minister of Health Dipika Damerla said in a release.

The Ontario Campaign for Action on Tobacco applauded the newly announced restrictions Friday.

Smoke-free patios are a critical next step in protecting servers and the public. Theyll remove tobacco use as an apparently normal part of friends and families enjoying socializing over food and drinks, the agency's director Michael Perley said in a release.
